KaresB

of course it makes a difference smile

It's just, in my opinion, not what's on the original record.

Well, I'm too lazy to check... razz

Maybe she just added the inversion on the live renditions but it sounds gorgeous.

There's no inversion on the album version and I haven't heard it played like that before.

It does sound interesting, but it's somehow missing that punch the first chord has on the album version. Major chords in the first inversion, with that thrid in the bass, usually sound a bit "lost" and "tense", which can be extremely beautiful, but doesn't really fit the beginning of this particular song, in my opinion.

Made another video - it highlights how to play Purple Rain the right way.

There are a ton of videos out there but none of them are correct. Most people are playing major chords but as you can hear, they're incorrect.

J

You played it wrong.

and, btw - here is a great lesson from Lick Library

By the way, the chords are wrong in this tutorial... so ummm, I'm not sure what your little point was/is.

This reminds me of the guy who tried to claim that he was better at guitar than Prince. Anyone remember that? He, too, did not know how to tune the guitar but he made lots of hilarious excuses.

Finally, the chords posted by KaresB are correct, but everybody forgets the first chord should be Bb sus2/D. It's a first inversion of the chord and the bass is on the third of that chord (i.e. D). Wendy explains that on DVD2 of the Special Edition of Purple Rain.

[Edited 8/28/11 4:38am]

Who said that it was played that way on the record? biggrin

This is not a great lesson either - he's got the chords wrong. (Of course maybe he's just playing it in this simplified way to make it easier for the beginners.) Close, but wrong.

Jayardahb at least got the chords right, he just can't play them well.

[Edited 8/28/11 4:03am]

I would say that MichaelCasswell is one of the best teachers today and his lessons are pretty close.

Also he shows different ways of playing the same chords in the middle of the video.

Nevermind -I gave an info. One coul decide how to use it

The thumb-bar thing is difficult on wider necked acoustic guitars. For the F, anyway.

Telling the truth I`m very shy person indeed. And rarely post here.

Just don`t understand absolute opinions of posters.

Life matters. Love matters. Times are changing. Opinions and money is nothing.

I didn`t mean to offend anybody. I just posted a link to the tutorial that sounds right to my ears.

I could be wrong - whatever. One could decide what way to go. Just funny to read when somebody argue on one exact chors because he THINKS ut should be played that way. Nobody except Prince knows how to play it. And even for Live shows he plays it differently...

Don`t see a problem here wink

Hello Jay. I only listened to the beginning. And. Erm. You're almost there. Plus, thanks for doing a music music post. I like it.....

Actually, there's this documentary about Prince where Wendy & Lisa can give you a heads up on the sustain notes they played in Purple Rain. Wendy talked about how Prince used straight up chords, and then Wendy sustained some of them. Check that out. You'll get it from the horses mouth. I think she even plays the beginning.

Otherwise, if that's long, this is the beginning....as Wendy plays before the whole band comes in.

bBsus2 (Barre that)

bBsus2 with a G in the bass (as bBsus barred)

F9 (I play it, 6th string F, 5th string C, 4th string G)

bEsus2 (Barre that too)

And then for the verse, you keep the above going, but just play a normal FMaj (Barre that too)

EDIT NOTE----Had to Edit sus to sus2 - as complements of GaryMF pointing out my lackluster notation. Thanks Gary cool

for the record, the chords to Purple Rain intro are (with finger positions in the order of EADGBE strings) :

Bb sus2 (x 1 3 3 1 1)

Gm11 (3 x 0 3 1 1)

F add9 (1 3 5 2 x x)

Eb add9 (x 6 8 10 8 6)

[Edited 8/28/11 5:55am]

Nice KaresB! I should really start learning the proper names to these chords. It's a hit or miss if I get the A in the Fadd9. You explain it better than me.

Him:

Your post reminds me of that little feather in Prince's scarf from the movie Purple Rain. Can't remember it? It's almost as insignificant as your posts.

Keep posting though son - they're quite hilarious to read!!!

Me:

Wow, I like that I bothered you this much. You must have crafted that little gem for hours. Your lack of discernible skill and know-it-all attitude is a disgusting combination. Take lessons, friend.

Here's where he gets really mad:

Here`s a little tip... stop making music.

Also, it`s fans like you who really don`t understand the significance of why Prince is such an important artist.

Your fanboy love for the guy is strange...

As for your emotionless, soulless, boring, middle of the road music - well, maybe you could save the world from having to even hear such drivel nonsense. The lyrics especially are cringe worthy - almost as bad as when you show any emotion in your singing.

First my music is emotionless and then he says it's bad when I show emotion. Also, I think people who know me on here know that I am anything but a Prince fanboy. This guy literally knows nothing about me.

HERE is the post that pissed him off:

lol that slow love video is so disturbing. he acts like he's satriani or vai playing that layman shit.

Mental health issues to be sure. But this ia nice birthday present.

You mean "Suspended chords" not "sustained notes".

Sustained notes mean you hold a NOTE and let it ring out.

A suspended CHORD means you don't play the standard "3" of the chord (major or minor) and instead play the 4th or 2nd note (either Sus4 or Sus2 respectively)

Purple Rain starts with Sus2, not Sus 4 (your note above just says "Sus" which usually is shorthand for Sus4 which is more common than Sus2 so you have to state Sus2 specifically).

I don't know where people above started talking about the D in the bass. I don't think D should be played at ALL because D is the 3rd note of Bb which is the exact not you are NOT supposed to play (ie. the note being suspended).

Maybe call it "One Way to Play Purple Rain?" Even Prince doesn't play the original note for note. It's kind of like anyone playing "Comfortably Numb", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or "Little Wing", Starts (or should start off) conventional, then the solo is where you're supposed to show off.

First of all, y'all need to check yourselves. Jay has contributed a lot of Prince tabs, going back at least as far as "Gold", and I can't remember any of them being wrong or incorrect. So thanks, Jay, for the tabs.

Second, the song sounds just about right, but I agree that using the thumb isn't the best way. In the seminal interview with Prince in "Guitar Player" magazine, there was a sidebar on how to actually play "Purple Rain" like Wendy did. Look it up.

Third, grow up everyone.

Hi GaryMF. Sorry. Yeah. Not the sustained thing. I meant sus2. I should be more clearer. Nevermind, I sometimes do that thing where I nod my head when someone asks me question on the phone. Not thinking lol!

I don't know about the D thing, but it's definitely a G in the bass. I did say that...right?.. eek I did lol.

That JUMP Van Halen song sounds like it has a load of sus4 and sus2 notes. Note to self...will learn one day.
