Favourite Prince basslines?

I've been addicted to "let's work" for the past week, so funky. What are some of your favourites?

I have a few! The ones already mentioned, 2 Nigs United, Partyup, I'm Yours, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Sexuality, they're the only ones I can come up with off the top of my head.

his first that's my favorite?...Let's Work. Other than that...there's to many faves to narrow down to a short list.

head and dirty mind and party up...but they dont hit me like lets work. "Prince" wasn't bassline havy imo, so theres cool lines but none r to the fore.

Prince once said that the bass line in "The One" was created by Rhonda Smith, and he wrote the song around the bassline.

This is actually some of the things I love about Prince work. I wasn't overplaying the bass, but he used it in a minimalistic but difinitly a very effective and creative way. His style and timing is so damn funky, and the way he puts his fills here and there makes it more enjoyable to listen to than on songs where the bass is always everywhere. Victor Wooten is an incredible bassist that would make Prince look like he just learned how to tie his shoe laces. But Prince is a more clever bassist, atleast song wise imo. Prince is a producer and composer, and has the knowledge of silence and "air". How to talk with and instrument and build an excitement is Prince way of sounding like he is some of the best in many instruments. It's his mind more than his ability technically.

Head is a perfect example of simple being genuis imo, as well as many of The Time funk grooves. Listen closely to Head. You'l hear som clever fills here and there, of course with Let's Work too. And what about Do Me Baby. The Basic bass line has minor changes along the way that helps making the song stay interresting while listening to it. Prince way of making his music stay interresting on so many levels, is the small details in every instrument. And this is even on his most mainstream pop songs.

absolutely. Prince is a excellent bassist. He can't compare to guys who are technical monsters who have dedicated their entire lives to just one instrument, but he has written some incredible basslines- and that is what makes Prince a wonderful composer. He knows how to use an instrument to write something great.

I find the bass is hidden in alot of Prince material. Some great shit on the Batman soundtrack, especially the title track.

Also "Dance On" has some cool bass bits....afterall .... it was longing for teh funk
