Considering the amount of stuff (That I asume is in there) if Prince dies before he emptys out the vault I think theres a good chance that no one will bother with it. Prince hasnt been popular for a long time and labels might not wanna have to dig through miles of shit looking for hidden gems that might not exist razz

"Conserved"? lol lol lol falloff

According to more than one person, a lot of Prince's 80's material was in an incredibly sorry state of preservation. The engineers were all set to bake the tapes and transfer everything to more reliable storage and Prince stopped them at the last minute.

Uness he changed his mind later at some point, all the early recordings are probably just black gunk hanging on the spools.

I doubt the tapes have deterioriated beyond repair. Steve Hoffman was able to remaster Jethro Tull's Aqualung using tapes that had been sitting in a garage for more than 25 years. I am more afraid of what Prince might do with the tapes than I am about natural deterioration.

I don't so much care about what may or may not be left unheard. What I want if for a conservator to be allowed to compile, catalogue and restore everything. Even if nothing is ever released. I've maintained for years that this material is an important part of his musical legacy and its disappointing that he doesn't treat it that way. It would be great if proper collections of whatever Prince sees fit allowing the public to have in an "official" capacity were then released, but I'm not holding my breath.

Realistically, I know its likely this is never going to happen while he's alive. My biggest hope is that he does fight to get his masters back and takes it upon himself to release remastered deluxe editions containing demos, alt and extended versions of each albums corresponding tracks. Again, not very likely, but possible, anyway.

The thing about "the vault" that I think is sometimes missed is that there is still a lot of people who haven't heard ANY of the stuff that some of us take for granted. There is still people out who haven't heard all the b-sides, extended versions and EPs. Honestly, there are people who haven't even heard all his officially released albums. So for some people any vault release will always be an entirely new thing.

My gut tells me there is still some real gems hidden away on some tapes gathering dusts in bowels of Paisley Park. I have far more unreleased music than is reasonable, but there is still a long list of officially recorded tracks that I don't have. I'm sure there are a few that nobody knows about, too. Still don't think we'll ever hear them while he's alive. lol

If he does a Deluxe Edition:

First disc should be the original album remastered & b-sides

Second disc should be DVD - live concert, TV appearances, interviews, videos, demos, photos, memorabilia, "making of", 5.1 mix, original album mix, lossless digital copies for the iPod, and P's mix in Blu Ray. You'd need Blu Ray to fit a lot of stuff from each album. The ones that are movie soundtracks should have the movies included.

I don't know... when something has deteriorated to the point that the tape needs to be baked, I doubt there can be much life left.

Actually, it's pretty standard for tapes recorded in the 1970s and 1980s to have to bake them before remastering. See here:

http://www.stevehoffman.t...ffFAQ1.htm

If you listen to the recent vinyl reissues of Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999, which were remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original tapes, they sound great.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that the Vault is a disorganized mess and that it would take a team of archivists working for months to find the unreleased gems we're hoping are in there somewhere, buried among the Gangster Glam remixes.

"What if"? It most certainly will be overrated. I mean, would he release the least of his stuff onto us?

It's become a "standard" only because virtually all tapes from a 20+ year period are plagued with this tragedy. Eventually, if you want to save the data you have to bake them and move it to something better.

Your link highlights what a horrible situation this is...

What if that day comes when Prince decides to empty his vault, & besides the outtakes already out there, nothing else is all that good? What if Prince [mostly] released all of his best stuff????

I think it would be safe to say that IF Prince empties his vault and IF all of his "good" stuff has been released, then THERE WILL BE NO GOOD STUFF RELEASED.

Have you got any other questions that you yourself HAVEN'T already answered within your question?

Trust me...based on what I've heard so far...most of it is better than the released stuff...it shows the true Prince not as a commercial figure but for the enigmatic and interesting artist that he is.

I agree if you're referring to the last decade, but compared to his 80's stuff, I don't know..... lol

Even his 80s outtakes are better than a lot of released stuff IMO, think Dream Factory / Rave Un2 outtakes....

the vault would make a great 10 cd release .. but it would likely be mauled by post wb work .. and would be marketed in a very overrated manner when it will be much like crystal ball .. mostly new crap with 3 or 4 classic unreleased songs thrown in to bait the fans
