"The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" The First True Neo-Soul Record?

To me, this is the first true neo-soul record. The instrumets. The vibe.

I played this song for my black friends at a bonfire, and they went crazy. They made me play it all night. One asked me if "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" was recorded in the last decade, and I said, "no, 1986", and he looked at me stared for like 5 seconds, and told me to stop lying.

Is this the first true neo-soul song?

I dont know if it's Neo Soul or not.

To me, it's uncategorisable. Also, it might be the greatest song he's ever recorded smile

It's a song I never ever get tired of.

I've always said this. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker definitely has a neo-soul vibe to it. I think it may have been influential, especially to cats like D'Angelo who LOVE Prince.

I've been saying this for years...

Don't underestimate the influence of this song on the "neo-soul" genre.

Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.

You have BLACK friends, wow, aren't you special? You're becoming this site's new shit disturber if nothing else. If you can take real criticism for a moment, that statement of yours doesn't place you in a favorable light. If you need to make such distinctions, you're not as enlightened as you think you are. I can't stop you but you need to quit making every second thought a topic, it's pathetic.

This is my second thread in this forum in the last 4 days. I made one in General Discussion since Saturday...maybe it's seems like I make to many threads because my old threads are still active. I don't know...

Listen, I live in San Diego, we always adress our friends by race. We've been doing that since kindergarden. My black friend adress me as their Columbian friend, and I adress them as my black friends. It's just what we do. I wasn't trying to do that on purpose, it's a natural thing. Sorry.

I stand by what I say, how is it harsh? I'm 39 and even twenty years ago I would not have made the distinction between my white or black friends, a friend should be just that, A Friend. If his statement was left out of the topic, this thread would run its course for debate. I find it troubling that we still need to say such things in this present time.

I said "first true". Meaning did it the neo soul of the 90's and early 2000's capture elements of this song.

Just curious, are you a white dude? From my experience (as a minority), people who proudly profess to being color-blind are usually light on the melanin side. When you're non-white, being color-blind doesn't mean anything, because there will always be people/situations to remind you of the differences. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging and respecting that someone has a different race/culture from your own, as long folks don't hate and denigrate... twocents
