Agree. That's definitely all Oprah's hair. I think many in society have this idea that when they see Black women with long hair, they immediately think it isn't theirs. Same thing with some Black men. Not true, many Black men/women have long hair.
If anyone can go back and remember in Prince's early days he had a large afro, and when he did the show on Dick Clark, he apparently had it straightened, and that was his hair. Now whether they added extensions to his hair in the PR or GB movie, to give it a fuller effect, what's the big deal really? That did not mean the man didn't have a full head of hair. I think lack of knowledge of the various grain types of hair on Blacks, gets a bit confusing to many who don't know much about it. [Edited 7/22/11 11:12am]

Yep, I lived in the 1970's and 1980's so I know Black women (especially with kinky hair) can grow lot's of hair. the 1 thing about those years especially that everyone mostly wore their hair natural. And Pressing hair (white women did too) is a more 'non altering'? process. Most people that don't chemically mess with their hair and eat/drink properly can grow their hair
Yes I posted a good number of those fro/straightened pics of Prince here Yeah I don't even get the purpose of adding to Prince's hair in PR,
But a lot of Black people are the ones who say that must be a weave or extension, Mostly because they don't have hair or can't grow it, so anyone else must have weave. I hate hearing that, it sounds like a put down almost. "That's not her hair she bought that"

I doubt it's weaves or extensions anyways. Prince had a full head of hair and today most of his hair is intact if shorter than it was during his heyday.

You are absolutely correct. I love watching the Soul Train shows from the 70s, and see how many Black women were wearing their hair natural or just pressing it with the "hot comb", instead of using chemicals. At that time there weren't many hair products for our various, textures of hair. So many were just hot straightening their hair I agree with you though, I do hear a lot of Blacks today, saying that about other Black women, like immediately thinking another Black woman is wearing a weave.
Funny story, I was shopping with my mom when I was younger, and this lady, of approaching my mother, and asking her where she got her hairpiece, as my mother had her hair up in a bun at that time, and lawd help that woman for asking her that, because my mother immediately got insulted that the woman thought she was wearing a hair piece, and my mom swore at the poor woman for asking her that. Not a very nice reaction, but hey, what can I say. I think my mother at that point, just got tired of everyone thinking her beautiful long hair, wasn't hers. That's her in my avatar when she was very younger. Now in her senior years, she now just wears it in two long braids that just falls right under her breast line. [Edited 7/22/11 13:20pm]

Leave it to OF4S to bring out those pics! Thanks. That's the one I was talking about. That's his hair in those pics. Anyone could see from his early days of the big 'fro, that when his hair was straightened, of course it would be long. He looks adorable in those pics. [Edited 7/22/11 13:15pm]

"makes it painfully obvious that this amazing look was the with help of extensions"......what proof do you have, other than you viewing a movie on a small ipad?

I always find myself agreeing with your posts! LOL. That is not to say, I look through these threads and see where you will post, but I mean, when I see your name, I know that your point will be addressed in a unique way, and that speaks clarity on many levels. I totally agree in what you are saying. I am in the process of growing my hair out, and I think it's amazing when eye see other "Black people" display their hair in other forms. My girlfriend who is Honduran/Salvadoran HAD this "IDEA" that if a black person had long hair, they MUST be mixed with something..lol. That annoyed me as HECK. Haha. It wasn't until further discussion of this, she became convinced not everyone is apart of that variable. The same is said, when someone sees a light skin black person, if they are not BURNT black they must be mixed. What the HELL? LOL.
SORRY SO LONG...Went on a tangent..Haha It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I may not defend Prince on much these days but I will defend his hair during the '80's!!!
It was HIS!!! From 84 to 94 I wore my hair damn near JUST LIKE HIS!
When he wore his long, I wore mine's long. When he'd hack his off, I was in the beauty shop with a picture, getting cursed the fuck out, for wanting my hair just like his.
I gave that shit up for a while when he broke out with the Typhoon!
But I did give it one last go round when he got that cut for TMBGITW video. I rocked that one for a 5 years because it looked so damn good on me! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

The notion that Prince wore a wig or had extensions when his hair was longer.....
This might be one of the stupidest threads I've seen on the Org... & there have been many.

How about a plain old perm!!! Lord people have been wearing a perm for over 20 years and my hair is on my shoulders. I never needed a weave not all black folk need extensions, wigs or weave. Some of us just have really good hair dressers and go every six weeks. Keep in mind P can afford the best no reason for him to have had a weave back in the day.

Painfully obvious? On an iPad? The question should be what kind of hair product was he using when he made the movie...

Are you directing this comment to me? If so, please re-read my comment. I have said that I do not believe Prince was wearing weave and commented on how big his afro was. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Getting my ass WHOOPED on the streets of Detroit wasn't inside of me and as much as I LOVED Prince back then...I had absolutely no intention of that being inside of me, either!!!
I'd have whooped my own damn ass....had I ever even considered of rocking that mess! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

WEAVES DO NOT FRIZZ UP. Fake hair back then layed flat... wigs stayed in their place and they didn't move. With Prince jumping around all over the place he would have flipped that shit off or it would have stayed stiff as a board. Ask Tina Turner! That heffas hair stayed in ONE place.
Prince hand a professional press n curl in the 80's. They used Marcel irons on his head to make the curls (1" barrel) .... go ask Snoop Dog, he rocks the same look from time to time.
Prince's hair was a damned fizzy mess ... even in the movie when he got sweatty. THis is what happens with a press n curl when you sweat it out... if his hair was relaxed, it wouldn't of had the same "body".
He doesn't wear weaves, wigs or tracks... I did hair, ETHNIC hair and curly hair does all kinds of things.
And yes, anyone can grow their hair long with OUT a fucking weave if they know how to maintain their hair, no matter how fine it is.
WTF is wrong with you people? Stop hatin' on Prince's natural fabulous locks. We all know he a hairy little mofo. Look at his chest.... no bead-a-beads... that should help you understand that he has a looser curl/nap and not an uber tight nap.

ecstasy said: Sure ur not lookin at the Prince double's hair during particular scenes? I agree, I cannot recall Prince's doubles name but I remember his hair being really fuzzy. That may be the case. What is so funny and truly stupid regarding this inquiry is that all of us here have seen pictures of Prince dating back to his teens. He has hair!!! Lots of fucking hair!!! Either the Afro or the Barry White bee gees look of the 70's. I have a picture of him standing next to Gayle Chapman and he looks like he has a mullet. His Afro has an Afro!! With all of these images and the fact he was 26 at the time, I'm sure this is his hair. Now flash forward to 50 plus is a diffent story. But even then does it really fucking matter. Shit if I had baldness issues and was 50+ and a big star I'd do like my brother and by some more.

Prince had a double? For what, getting his arm ALL the way around Apollonia's breasts?
But agreed... Prince has a dense head of hair... it has thinned out a bit as he has aged I am sure, but many men with dense heads of hair only need a little hair spray and a bit of teasing to get a head FULL of curls. Especially if the roots are napped up in the crown of his head... instant pompadour!

OK that's a good reason to have a body double... can't have our Prince spinning out and getting road rash.

I'm not saying P can't grow his hair. Prince had great hair and he styled grew and cut it many ways.I'm not sure why maybe he wanted really big eighties hair maybe they needed to start shooting the movie right away and he couldn't wait for it to grow. Regardless of the reason the texture of those strands in many scenes in that movie and during many Purple Rain concerts look totally synthetic. The question is not whether Prince can grow hair he obviously can grow it as long as he wants.Thst hair though is not real.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The reason you may think it looked fake is the amount of hair spray used to keep it in place. Prince needed that so he wouldn't sweat his perm out and have it fall flat while in concert. __________________________________________________
