The Truth Hurts but...The Truth Sucks!

I am really, really sorry...no, I am not but I tried to listen to the The Truth yesterday again and I still can't stand it. Am I an idiot? Please explain to me what I am listening for.

The stripped down music?
poignant lyrics?
Prince baring his soul?
Circle of Amour?

The musicianship and vibe are not why MANY of us became Prince listeners. I like funk, grooves, and neat sound-fx Prince comes up with. "The Truth" doesn't have that.

I think "The Truth" is overrated on this site: many fans love, it seems, to have a "secret", "Underappreciated Album by the critics and public that PROVES Prince's 'genius'"!album. This is what they do with "Lovesexy".

"Lovesexy" loses serious steam on side two, or mid-way thru. It's hard NOT to see it as just a hurried replacement for "The Black Album", because that's what it was! But Prince fans like to attach labels to it, and make it more than what it was/is. What is so great about "Eye No"? It's creation is really a rearerangment and new lyrics of "The Ball". "Alphabet St." goes on too long. "Glam Slam" is a flat melody. "Dance On": noise? "When 2r in Love": a patchwork transplant. "Positivity": dull?

"The Truth": is this track REALLY special? "Don't Play Me":Self-indulgent and not particularily memorable, compositionally?

"The Truth" is just plain GOOD, but NOT the 'artistic statement and example of Prince's wide-ranging abilities' fans here try to make it. I think a LOT of Prince fans have a complex about liking Prince. They cannot understand how the general public can not "see" what they "see". They post their worries about record sales and popularity, and critics not appreciating what they hear.

Prince fans just need to worry about what THEY get out of the deal. Don't try to tell us "The Truth" is genius! I remember one guy posting recently that he donated "The Truth" to a local library to "spread the word". That's in vain. My library has a copy of "The Truth" and it's ALWAYS sitting there. People always want to force Prince music on others, like those who post how they force their friends or co-workers to listen to his music, or how they bought "The Rainbow Children" for others for X-Mess.TRC as a Christmas present? That's kind of a risk, isn't it, forcing a funky-psudo-religious statement on another?

STYMIE: if you DON'T like "The Truth", thats cool! Don't let anyone on this site make you think "you're missing something". You're taste is all that counts. Not theirs. Not record sales.

The Truth didn't grab me as particularly classic for quite some time but then I saw some of it performed live, and while still not mindblowing, I have developed a better feel for the album. I think most of it is very good, and some of the storytelling is great.

Pimpy, Handsclap, I thank you. I often find that the type of Prince fan I am is just one who's in the middle..I buy everything he puts out, but a lot of my collection sits on the shelf collecting dust. There are whole albums I don't like a single song on. I wonder what I miss sometimes, tho' cuz I don't buy boots or own any concerts on tape but maybe one day he'll release the stuff and I'll get all gung-ho. . Pimpy, I also feel the same way about Lovesexy. Other than Lovesexy, I don't listen to that whole side.

the Truth has a couple of mediocre songs, no doubt, but it's still the last, best glimpse of 80's-era Prince

Go ahead and shoot me down, but The Truth is FUCKING GENIOUS! lol

I love this album and it has been the most consistently played album of Princes since SOTT for me.

I love his whole "Fuck U, this is just me and my guitar and I'm gonna play what the fuck I like" attitude on this CD.

biggrin

But seriously, I think that One of Your Tears is an absolutely sublime song. The way that Prince delivers those sexy breezy vocals is painfully beautiful.

Did you get that tape I sent you
I thought it'd be better in a song
Better than the used condoms you sent me
Baby that was wrong

I hardly know anything technically about music and I just go on gut instinct and feelings, and what with Comeback and Cool As The Other Side Of The Pillow I think Prince made a few great artistic statements on that record.

Just gotta throw my personal opinion into this pot -- I love The Truth -- it blows me away:

The Truth
Don't Play Me
Circle of Amour
3rd Eye
Dionne
Man In A Uniform
Animal Kingdom
The Other Side of The Pillow
Fascination
One of Your Tears
Comeback
Welcome 2 The Dawn

I'm re-listening to it right now - I love the songs: some are so truthful; some so mellow & beautiful; some have great musical arrangements.

It's just a complex and more adult Prince. Not a casual, fun listen really. It's sad and angry and bittersweet and honest. And his playing is incredible. I'd say "The Truth" is the last perfect new album he's made.
