OHHH.. LAWD! Not The Truth argument... AGAIN.

What I don't understand is that if The Truth doesn't appeal to (you) then that's understandable, everyone has different tastes. But I kind of get the impression that the people that don't like "The Truth" keep making it a point to tell everyone else they don't like it only because they can't see why someone else likes it so much.

It's almost like those who dislike the album have developed sort of an animosity towards those who like it just because they can't relate.

Have you ever told a joke to a group of people and when you get to the punchline everyone starts laughing. But then there's one person that didn't "get it" and he feels left out, then you have to stop and explain the joke to him. But by the time you do that, it's not funny anymore. Well, that's sort of how I feel about explaining The Truth to others who seem to express some kind of bitterness that they don't "get it" when it comes to The Truth.

Some people take the time to explain why they don't like the Truth, and I respect that even when I disagree with their point of view. But when a work of art, any type of art, gets gets brought down to such a narrowminded phrase as "IT SUCKS" well... is it really worth discussing any further at that point?
Future, sorry, I wasn't around for the first Truth discussion. I have not expressed the way I felt about it on this forum before. I tend to have a one or two word opinion about things I like or don't like. Since I am entitled to have that opinion, whether this album is a work of art or not(I feel that it is not), it sucks. As far as being narrowminded, I feel that I have given the album all the chances I will, just off of the opinions of people here. I listened to it with an open mind again last night and had Prince not gotten in his own way with the voice overdubs and maybe just played only acoustic guitar I may have liked it better. Animal Kingdom. Need I say more?

What is so great about "Eye No"? It's creation is really a rearerangment and new lyrics of "The Ball". "Alphabet St." goes on too long. "Glam Slam" is a flat melody. "Dance On": noise? "When 2r in Love": a patchwork transplant. "Positivity": dull?

Wow. You really don't know anything about music, do you.

"Eye No": IS a rearrangement of "The Ball", assuming you are indeed familiar with that track. "Eye No"'s mix must have 24 trax piled on top of each other. It's more of an interesting listen than a "good" song. I think the dimensionality and quality of a song goes beyond how you can make it sound in the studio: live, "Eye No", you must admit, IF you have heard it live, is pretty bad! Check out the "Livesexy 88" video, or the "Lovesexy in Norway" bootleg as evidence. It falls apart.

"Alphabet St.": the single edit is better, tighter, and like much of "Parade", edited to perfection. The full album version of Alphabet St. degenerated into noise and sound effects. It loses it's impact; can YOU really say you dig Cat's "rap"? That voice is like nails on a chalkboard! No soul. The whole bit with screeching tires and and the pony sounds: do you get off on that? Now run and tell yo mama about that!

Do you not think "Glam Slam" had the most predictable and blandest melody in Prince's catalog?

"Dance On": this track stutters along with sound effects. "Get off me punk, you ain't sexy!"-what's that about? Don't tell me this track is something you feel in your soul!

" Positivity": the choir section aside, what a boring way to end this album. He goes from textured and layered tracks like "Lovesexy", bold centerpiece in "Anna Stesia" and the sublime "I Wish U Heaven", to a Linn drum beat thudding to lyrics about "Do u dream nights/do u dream straight up/ or do you dream in w's?- what? What a blown oprotunity to put the "Cherry on top" of the statement he's trying to make with this album!

"Lovesexy"'s whole is much greater than the sum of it's parts. I think you are confusing the total vibe of the album with the quality of certain songs. Maybe that is why you get instantly defensive and hostile, and immediately resort to saying I know nothing about music. Whatever. Discussion about the merits of music is more interesting than insulting someone whose opinion differs to yours. Typically American.

Couldn't this arguement be used for ANY Album,Prince or otherwise?

Yep, around here it sure could.

Circle of Amour?

Did somebody say Circle of Amour? Man I'd listen to the disc for that cut alone one of my all time faves.

I think I always lied the IDEA behind this record more than i did the content. I twas just so cool to first hear it and listen to Prince in a way that I'd never heard him before: stripped down and basic. It was like an unofficial "Prince Unplugged" release.

Love the first 2 tracks, 'Fascination' and 'Welcome to the Dawn', but don't share the unconditional ove and enthusiasm for this disc that many others seem to.

Seriously, I liked the Crystal Ball discs better than that one...

i like "the truth" a lot now, but i didn't like it very much at first... i had head that it was prince's acoustic album and i had heard the songs "the truth" and "the other side of the pillow" from a buddy of mine...

so, i saved up the money and bought "crystal ball"... i put "truth" in first... and i didn't like it... because it's really not prince's acoustic album... it sounds like it started as an acoustic album but he kept adding layers to it... too many keyboards, drum programming, and whatnot for it to sound like an acoustic album... hell, "fascination" even has an electric guitar solo in it...

so, in essence, some of the songs were very stripped down and acoustic, and i loved those... but some of them were as overdone and polished as anything else he had done and seemed out of place...

over time, i have gotten used to this, and i enjoy the cd very much... but i still wish that he had let the cd be acoustic... acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, maybe some light drumming here and there... but no damn keyboards and electric guitars and drum machines...

I liked The Truth instantly. His best work from the 90's.

It was like a breath of fresh air after all those lumpen sex funk "I'm trying desperately to be relevant" albums from '89-'96.

The Truth never did it for me. I think it is very boring, tried to get into it numerous times but it just doesn't work for me. I actually think it is his weakest album together with For You.

Give me The Funk instead of The Truth! wink
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
