The Guardian:

By the way, YouNowWho and Friend, there is of course no circumstance in which a newspaper with an international readership in the tens of millions would compromise its journalism by taking an editorial line from a group of people on a fan site.

Thank the Lawd...2 many trolls giving fans a bad name here at the org and elsewhere

The difference is he is putting it out there in a large forum as a public person. You or I could have this discussion and no one would likely care or report it. My point is that if he worries about misquoting he should stay silent (or allow recording device). He has AGREED to the sensationalism by playing into the whole media game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. It's a gamble, pure and simple.

zannaloaf in my opinion the people who win are those who exhibit ethical conduct.

sensationalism is unethical. every day the press do this to people.

in my simple mind, that is wrong.

why should anyone have to stay quiet just because there are people out there who will misunderstand, misinterpret and sensationalise what they hear and read?

i mentioned in another thread that in my opinion i dont understand why prince needs to speak to any of these people.

someone said it's promotion. interestingly, prince sold out a lot of shows before he talked to the press.

so what purpose do these interviews serve? i guess i just dont see it.

please note, i'm not saying people should stay naive and expect others to understand them, i'm saying that even if they do, it is still wrong for the press to sensationalise their words purely for their own gain.

to me that's an obvious conclusion.

Of course he doesn't HAVE to do interviews. But he does...what does that say?

I don't understand why people are surprised that the diehards are still defending their purple liege. Anyone that's been here for 5 minutes, knows that the diehards will defend Prince for ANY AND EVERYTHING.

The thing i don't get is how some do not understand the difference between an interview being transcribed in English and one that's transcribed from English to French and back to English. Anyone that SPEAKS A SECOND LANGUAGE understands that often it's difficult as there are words that don't exist in the other language and there are different ways of structuring sentences.

As someone pointed out, Google Translate a song from English to another language and then back to English and you'll end up with something unrecognizable.

Reading the Le Parisien article you can tell that it was transcibed wrong. It doesn't even sound like anything that Prince would say. But of course, the diehards don't see that. Anything that paints P in the best possible light is what they're going to hang on to.

I'm glad The Guardian spoke up to set the record straight.

I think I'm a diehard, but I don't like everything he puts out, and don't defend his bull crap behavior

How remarkable this discussion is limited to:

1. Did Prince say this, yes or no?

2. If he has said this, should he, or shouldn't he?

What I would like to add is a third point, one that is important, yet lacking: how can we weigh Prince's comment? It's easy to say: he's off the wall, let him perform, and let him be silent off stage.

I think Prince's burqa remark is revealing. Remember that Prince was quoted a few decades ago about creativity being almost a curse for him. You brush your teeth and there pops up another song.

I have always seen Prince's Jehovah conversion as a way of dealing with the dark side of his own creativity, that is, coping with too many options. How do you choose wisely? Which road 2 choose?

Choosing one specific religion limits the options. It gives you a foundation. In this respect there's not much difference between wearing the straitjacket of a religion, in Prince's example that of the Jehovah's, and wearing a burqa.

In other words: Prince himself wears the metaphorical burqa of the Jehovah's witnesses and he's happy with it. It limits his options.

That sounds plausible. However, being religious influences the making of most decisions, behaviour, thinkng patterns, attitudes, interaction etcetera. Religion surelz can provide a strict guideline on how to be as a person. I prefer to make my own decisions.

When the rules of religion apply to every citizen, there is no freedom of choice for those who like their individual choices, not based on religion. Those people will be forced to limit themselves, eventhough that is not what makes them happy. Ignoring their need for freedom with a remark like there will allways be somebody who complaints, is ignorant.

There is no easy solution for human kind. Not even the sharia or the bible will make everybody happy.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Even though i would trust my life with the guardian more than THE NEWS OF THE WORLD overall "misprints and language distortion"are the trademarks of the uk,american, and no doubt the european press too.I'm not convinced prince would get into the burqa subject at all.As for prince not doing any new material i'm not convinced the press have the whole story on what prince thinks overall. If anything its obvious the man is obsessed with music. He could stick to smaller offerings like 20ten.maybe he has given up on compact disks?.There is definetely more too this story" with or without french" than meets the eye.It may not be the end of prince but some change of direction that we have'nt figured out yet.

I agree but his intention was simply to defend the burkha wearing in France were it is outlawed. Prince sees this as a form of racism. Since the current world affairs are lined up against Muslims. and racism of Muslims by right wing extremeists is at its highest now, Prince is

stating his support for Muslim women's right to wear it.

Again though I agree with your ststement

I don't know if that was his intention, considering the comment which followed regarding the positives of theocratic states and the forced restriction of choice, and of course his depressingly glib evasion of the question, "What about the women who do not want to wear the burkha?" He seems to be saying that he is for the enforcement of moral codes and dress codes, as long as they are being enforced by a religious state, and not a secular one. I somehow doubt that his current beliefs would be willing to extend to the right for a woman to wear revealing clothes, or t-shirts which expressed an anti-religious position. Personally, I don't believe that a government should have any say in what a person chooses to wear, but it would be a mistake to consider that Prince is supporting personal freedom here.

i dont do things for gain. maybe thats the way u think, but thats not me. my point was, the editor wasnt there, so he doesnt know what prince said. only dorian does.

what do u and most other people here have to gain by creating hatefest international? based on what? 2 conflicting articles?

how would you know what prince's intentions were by having 2 interviewers present at the same time? what makes u think he had any 'intentions' at all except to answer some questions?

seriously, why do you guys even come here if you can no longer stand his music or anything about him?

do you enjoy all the negativity and fighting? all the arguing? being constantly disappointed by his every move?

some of us still have respect for him. if you dont, then bounce.

Hold up, so YOU question everyone's motive with coming to this website to discuss Prince yet we can't discuss anything in a manner that YOU do not deem acceptable? Wonderful. Typical religious babblecrap and hypocritical as hell. What makes your shit not stink? What makes it okay for you to speak your mind but everyone else who may disagree with you needs to get their head checked? Oh, right, you consult a fucking spirit and it's all made better. Just stop.

You do it for gain just as much as anyone else posting here does it for gain. It makes YOU feel better knowing Prince (or, rather, believing Prince) to be a standup guy when he has done little to nothing to show that. If my bent is towards Prince being an asshole and your bent is towards Prince being a saint, then the truth must lie somewhere in the middle.

And nowhere here do you see me telling you to "bounce" with your retarded opinion that is completely based in unreality. That's the difference between people like you and people like me. I don't care what someone's opinion is - they are welcome to it. And should they present said opinion to be consumed by the masses, as you do by merely posting here for millions of people to see, they are perfectly open for examination. Why? Because not everything you hear is true. Naturally, that phrase only works for YOU when its compatible with YOUR beliefs.

What if everything PRINCE said was not true? Figure it out. Then let's talk.

Notice, I'll never tell you to bounce.
