The Guardian:

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian's Film&Music,

Prince said: "It's fun being in Islamic countries, to know there's only one religion. There's order. You wear a burqa. There's no choice. People are happy with that." When asked about the fate of those unhappy with having no choice, he replied: "There are people who are unhappy with everything. There's a dark side to everything."

The problem with the Guardian write up is that its just not true. In Morocco for e.g, the country where Prince said he was returning, it isn't obligatory to wear a hijab. In fact I'd say most women there do not wear one. If he's been there more than once he would know that. It doesn't make sense.

I'm not trying to defend Prince, but would like to add a bit of logic here.

Two journalists talk to one pop star, both of them are not allowed to record anything. Both have to write up what they've heard from memory. Result: they can both equally be wrong. The only difference is that one of them is a native speaker of the pop star's language while the other one isn't. That doesn't have to mean anything (the French guy might have a brilliant command of English - we don't know him, do we?), but it could indicate that the probablilty of the French dude to get things wrong is per se slightly higher. However, this is complete speculation. Without having been there and without a recorded tape, we don't know exactly what has been said. That's the whole point of Prince denying recorded interviews, isn't it? That he can correct himself afterwards as he wants. That doesn't take away the simple fact though that we don't know what exactly has been said.

The argument of the editor of The Guardian is ridiculous though. I guess The Sun also has a huge readership, but how reliable is it? He has to trust his coworker just as we have to. The only difference is that he knows the guy, and he might thus know him to be a reliable person - in general. Anyway, even a reliable person isn't right all of the time.

Good points. But don't expect people here on the org to take it to heart. Its easier for people to go on tyrades and only half listen.

What on earth do you have to gain by defending Prince with your insinuation that what Dorian gave them was NOT what Prince said??

i dont do things for gain. maybe thats the way u think, but thats not me. my point was, the editor wasnt there, so he doesnt know what prince said. only dorian does.

what do u and most other people here have to gain by creating hatefest international? based on what? 2 conflicting articles?

how would you know what prince's intentions were by having 2 interviewers present at the same time? what makes u think he had any 'intentions' at all except to answer some questions?

seriously, why do you guys even come here if you can no longer stand his music or anything about him?

do you enjoy all the negativity and fighting? all the arguing? being constantly disappointed by his every move?

some of us still have respect for him. if you dont, then bounce.

There are obviously people around here that are crazy enough to love misery! So don't let it get to you. Prince still rocks and I don't care how many haters on here love to hate....I'm going to defend Prince if he deserves it! And I think in this situation....he does.

Those articles were obviously totally different and The Guardian is being full of shit! They printed the controversial article to make themselves look great and cause controversy! Its what they do!! The BS they are giving over language barriers is something to cover their asses. They fucked up and they know it.

These seedy journalists love to twist words to the way they want them to sound, b/c what the French article wrote wasn't juicy enough or controversial enough for them....they had to spice it up. Dorian and his editor should be ashamed!! I hope this isn't getting Prince down.

The media always tries to tear down our great musicians! And the UK media is the most notorious for bogus interviews and always seems to be "misquoting" people. They are shameless!

Whatever Prince said, I'm sure it was well thought out and had a point which wasn't clearly printed in the article, and now people are jumping all over it, instead of thinking what he could have meant by what he said, or if it was even true.

"Just b/c its in print, doesn't mean its the gospel!"

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Hi,
I’m the editor who commissioned the piece from Dorian. There’s a further issue that explains the indisputable differences between the Guardian’s interview and Le Parisien’s. Not only has their interview been conducted in a second language, and then translated into the writer’s mother tongue, it’s then been further translated back into English for the version that appears above. Anyone who’s ever played the game where you use web translation tools to take a favourite song lyric, translate it into another language, then back into English knows that the final result is unlikely to bear much relation to the original.
By the way, YouNowWho and Friend, there is of course no circumstance in which a newspaper with an international readership in the tens of millions would compromise its journalism by taking an editorial line from a group of people on a fan site. It just doesn’t happen. As Dorian says, there was no agenda: we at the Guardian were as surprised as anyone by what he had to say.

Thanks salaciousV for the follow up thumbs up ...

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I don't understand why people are surprised that the diehards are still defending their purple liege. Anyone that's been here for 5 minutes, knows that the diehards will defend Prince for ANY AND EVERYTHING.

The thing i don't get is how some do not understand the difference between an interview being transcribed in English and one that's transcribed from English to French and back to English. Anyone that SPEAKS A SECOND LANGUAGE understands that often it's difficult as there are words that don't exist in the other language and there are different ways of structuring sentences.

As someone pointed out, Google Translate a song from English to another language and then back to English and you'll end up with something unrecognizable.

Reading the Le Parisien article you can tell that it was transcibed wrong. It doesn't even sound like anything that Prince would say. But of course, the diehards don't see that. Anything that paints P in the best possible light is what they're going to hang on to.

I'm glad The Guardian spoke up to set the record straight.

I wish people would stop using the language issue as though thats the main reason there'd be misinterpretation. Misinterpretation is common enough within ONE language. If you have 2 people interviewing at the same time and only writing up what was relevant to their questions you have large leeway to edit the question and response in a way that makes sense to your editorial and to the questions that interested the interviewer. Thats irrespective of the first language of the interviewers. The Guardians defense of their write up by blaming Le Parisien's interviewing in a second language doesn't mean anything. English is MY second language and I'm pretty sure I have a stronger command of it than a lot of native english speakers here. The truth is both papers had editorial leeway on the basis that everything had to have been transcribed in longhand.

And I take the editors defence of the interviewer with a grain of salt because his write up of the interview specifically highlights the craziest things Prince said. And for good reason, he wants people to read, so thats what you do. But his trying to act innocent as though he weren't also crafting the way people would read things doesn't hold water. Anyone who deals with the media world know thats part of their job insofar as they can get away with it. Readership is you bread and butter. 90% of the people who reacted to the interview didn't read it all the way thru. They read the highlights, they hear the sound bites and react.

"Rehab" doesn't mean he will never record again, it just means he is taking a break!

For someone whom REPEATEDLY seems to have to say that he was "misquoted" when doing interviews, I would think by now that he would be tired of that happening to him and would allow the interviews to be recorded. So he could then make the reporters produce the tapes publicily and humilate them into admitting that they accidently or even purposely "misquoted" him.

So why doesn't Prince do that?

My theory:

He likes the bullshit. He likes being able to say whatever stupid shit that he wants and if it is not received to his liking, then he walks it back with "I was misquoted." Think about it, how many times has Prince been "misquoted" in the last 10 years?

Exactly. This ain't the first time this has happened. Like paisleypark4 said, if he'd stop talking in those damn riddles and crytic messages, people wouldn't have to figure out what the hell he means. But then again, maybe he thinks he's Jesus and that his words should be studied. lol

When P said he was in recording rehab last he was married to Mayte and said that to Oprah in a televised interview. My thinking on that was that he has a girlfriend (or new wife) and he's slowin' down again (for his wife).

Yeah - no.

I think that might be Prince's issue. His answers during interviews do not seem to be well thought out or at the very least, not appropriately expressing his intended opinion.

I am all for cutting the guy some slack just because I love his music, but even in live interviews, he has still stated some kooky views, so we can't always blame it on the journalist.

I agree that journalists can take creative license to spin an article a certain way, but at the end of the day, Prince says some crazy shit sometimes and we should just accept that about him.

Just out of interest, is there a situation where you wouldn't instantly leap to Prince's defense?

If Prince had said this on live tv then there wouldn't be much to defend wouldn't there? Or if Prince had said something like "I hate Chinese people." Then that isn't something I'd defend. Of course I'd want to make sure it wasn't some kind of pre-taped interview that they had edited though.

But all this nonsense about what was written or possibly not written, and now the Guardian trying to say "misquotes happen, blah, blah, blah." As someone who's had alot of experience with translating between languages, etc. sure that happens with uncommon words or phrases, but I can't see how these particular words could be translated wrong!

But lets say they did.....why can't it just as easy be written down wrong by the Guardian? Perhaps, just the word "if" was left out by them? So "women are happy wearing burqas" is really "if women are happy wearing burqas."

I have no reason to believe the Guardian and its journalists over Prince.... I'm HIS fan, not theirs! I'm going with Prince on this one...I don't really care which article is right, b/c I've taken the time to understand what he could have meant by either of these, and I get it. So I still think it was blown way out of proportion.
