Just watched the entire performance. My 2 cents:

1) Andy added nothing to it. She didnt sing like Tamar and we couldnt barely listen to the guitar. She is pretty, yes. But that was all.

2) Some technical problems happened, like the out of tune Tele - replaced by Strat and no sound on the mic (which Prince overcame with class).

3) One of the best versions of ´SHHH´. Prince was on fire and it sounded very spontaneous. Loved it.

4) The first songs were cool. I liked the first one introducing the band, like he did with ´The Jam´.

5) Love Ida and her bass part on DMSR.

6) John Blackwell was great as always.

7) Liked Prince´s guitar playing a lot and the keyboard player too.

Meh. It's the exact same thing Rhonda did (on the Musicology tour), and Rhonda's was a little better/funkier, if you ask me.

I don't know which one it is, either. In fact, I'd not even realized the two songs were so similar until this thread!

- Yes, I know. I was hoping Prince would let Ida solo on that song. Rhonda seems more experienced indeed, but I like Ida too.

"You need a real drummer, if you want a good beat" -- really, Prince? I daresay that most of the beats you came up with on a drum computer in the 1980s are far superior than John Blackwell's "I must hit every part of this drumkit at least once every couple of seconds" crap.

Seriously, fire those "backing singers".

Oh, and another song about how funky you are? Hey, here's an idea: SHOW DON'T TELL. Write funky tunes instead of lame ass "look at me I'm so funky it hurts" generic crap.

And FYI: "Peach" is about sex. Stop being a hypocrite. And sweet jebus, that was one weak-ass version. You'd think you'd be able to play that song after it being a regular live staple for the past TWENTY YEARS.

And don't even get me started on "Anotherloverholenyohead". (Seriously? Incorporating Mötley Crüe's "Dr. Feelgood" -- a song about a drug dealer?)

You're the the same guy who prefers Bobby Z crap drumming skills on the 1984 bootlegs.

Yes. Soul over skill.

It's Rock Lobster by B52's.

No, it's not. Here he played "Dr. Feelgood". Other times he plays "Rock Lobster". Listen instead of making things up in your mind.

They're almost the exact same riff, so in the context of a Prince concert, I'd say that you're right if you call it "Rock Lobster" or "Dr. Feelgood".

Wait a second. They are? I don't hear that at all. I totally hear "Dr. Feelgood" in this one and "Rock Lobster" in the older ones. Weird.

Of course they're not "almost exactly the same". You'd have to have some serious hearing impairment to say that.

He's been playing this as a coda to Anotherlover since at least the '07 London shows - it's always billed as Rock Lobster on the boots, but maybe it is Dr Feelgood.

No, sometimes he plays "Rock Lobster", and here he played "Dr. Felgood". And no, they're not easily mistaken. I know both songs, have heard them tons of times.

I'm just disappointed that something which felt like a fun, semi-improvised mash-up at the time is still being wheeled out four years later...

The dude took the coda to "Peach" and turned that into a (not great) song, instead of just releasing a version of "Peach" with that piece.

Nice to see John Blackwell back, I met him briefly back in 2005 in Vienna, when he was touring with that 3 piece project, great guy, very down to earth

I felt uncomfortable 2 Trashcat

It made me think of :

was it Prince that wrote that song?!!! ... .. well thats the song that brought me here 2 the org. on the first place.

When I heard this song the first time I wanted 2 know more about the man, yes he is a man and the quintessence of art (4 me) dont masacre me you all

oh! yes before I forget, like if I will, want 2 say Sorry 2 Andy Allo

(I was the second person that scream Prince, while you was singing.

The only explanation that I have 4 this lack of disappear & respect 4 someone else art

is that I got caught in 2 my on desire more then I should have

You have a beautiful voice and you are a sexy mother funker

But anyway I am sure that you know all this and Prince as well

Check the name, the time, the place ... ....

I Also Want 2 say a biG THANK YOU 4 coming 2 Montreal to all of you

4 h of show WOW!!! it was the 2 best night of my life

I was the happiest girl even if my face look like the keen of mysery (had 3houres of sleep, since I went 2 the previous show a mooving preparation during the day 4h30 waiting for a good place lol!!!)

so here it is grouphug

the 26 jun, (I had 3hrs of sleep on the 25th and the 24) and the hardes mooving I ever had lol!!!

a second floor 2 a 3rd one, it was a up and down (48 stairs x by minimum 20 time)

yeahthat BVH has gone quiet after your comment. Maybe he's trolling through his complete Prince bootleg collection to find an example of each.

To me, it sounds a bit like both (bordering more on the Rock Lobster side of things) but is neither... Don't hate me for having an opinion anyone lol

I hardly spend any time on these boards, but I like to check in once in a while (I hope thats ok with you?) ... I first saw prince live in 1986 and to be honest I expected to see a higher standard form Prince in 2011. You could probably find a Prince covers band out there doing better versions of his songs.

couple of things strike me about this performance:

1. the performances are very loose, almost as if Prince gave that instruction to be loose and make it a jam. compared to the last time he was on this show, it's sounds so much more fun. maybe that's why it "appears" that there are some mistakes. I heard a couple of wrong chords coming from Prince like at the start of Peach and even when he restarted Anotherholeinyohead.

2. What the hell is he wearing?

3. Andy Allo......not sure what happened there. Did her guitar break or something?

4. Morris and the other keyboard player (what's her name?) to me seem superfluous. She didn't add anything and sounded generic r+b to me. I'm sure she is great if she's playing with Prince but where is Renato?

5. Ida looked like she was under some stress but she sounded great.

6. Fab guitar solos. Best I've heard in a while from Prince.

It sure was scratchy, but hey that's live performing. Seeing Prince recover from all those difficulties further consolidates that musically and in the live setting things come easy for him. Particularly like how he turned the mic to the crowd once he realised it wasnt functioning.

As for tight band, yeah you want that when you fork out some hard earned out of your own pocket, but on a TV show so what if its a little loose.

Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.

I agree with everything. Don't want to be too negative: the guitar solos were indeed very nice! I just hope the band won't be that loose when I see them next week.
