Original SOTT/Crystal Ball track list? According to PrinceVault, 7 or 8 songs were trimmed to turn Crystal Ball into SOTT. Which 7 songs? Are they available (commercially or otherwise)? Is the original track list and order known? Has the original Crystal Ball ever circulated as a boot? Thanks in advance. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

The 7 tracks that were omitted to create the Sign O' The Times album from Crystal Ball were:
1. Rebirth Of The Flesh 2. Crystal Ball 3. Rockhard In A Funky Place 4. The Ball 5. Joy In Repitition 6. Shockadelica 7. Good Love
These 7 tracks were omitted and U Got The Look was added to create Sign O' The Times.

Just read on Wiki when and where these songs made their official debut, but were these the original (or similar to) the intended SOTT mixes/arrangements? Need to track down "Rebirth," so I can put these in playlist! "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

The ball segued into JIR with a long sparse drum intro different to the released version. Love the original intro

The long sparse drum intro wasn't part of the Crystal Ball arrangement, that one pretty much was like how it is on GB, but just substitute The Ball, same way alphabet st comes on the end of Eye No.
The long sparse drum intro, from what I know, is only from the bootleg version of the song when it's all by itself. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Can someone tell me which "label" has the best versions of "Crystal Ball (original)" and "Dream Factory"? Looks like I found the Pimpsandwich versions, but am wondering if I should keep searching for something better. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

Here's the tracklisting for Crystal Ball...
Side 1: 01. Rebirth Of The Flesh 02. Play In The Sunshine 03. Housequake 04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker Side 2: 05. It 06. Starfish And Coffee 07. Slow Love 08. Hot Thing Side 3: 09. Crystal Ball 10. If I Was Your Girlfriend 11. Rockhard In A Funky Place Side 4: 12. The Ball 13. Joy In Repetition 14. Strange Relationship 15. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man Side 5: 16. Shockadelica 17. Good Love 18. Forever In My Life 19. Sign O' The Times Side 6: 20. The Cross 21. Adore 22. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
Rebirth Of The Flesh & The Ball are the only tracks that haven't been officially released, but both are widely circulating on bootlegs.
There was a rehearsal version of Rebith Of The Flesh officially released as a download through the NPGMC, and The Ball had it's lyrics re-written and was relased as Eye No on the Lovesexy album. [Edited 6/8/11 23:33pm]

Really? I got Pimpsandwich Crystal Ball and Dream Factory, the latter because I wanted to hear the earlier Wendy & Lisa versions. Are you saying these two releases are redundant?
I'll be listening to them today, so I guess I'll find out for myself. [Edited 6/9/11 8:07am] "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

WOW!!! I've never seen the originally intended track listing. I'm gonna have 2 put together my own playlist in that order & check it out... What an amazing album that would have been!!!

Yeah, I remember the first time I ever heard The Beatles' original Get Back LP (which eventually became the official Let It Be LP), it was such a revelation and improvement, that I rarely listen to the official Let It Be now. Wonder if that's about to happen with SOTT! [Edited 6/9/11 8:47am] "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

I do prefer the sequencing on Sign O' The Times, but I agree it would have been great to have had a triple album's worth of material. I did make my own version of Crystal Ball once which was a kinda hybrid of the two as I think that the album should have been tweaked further if it were to be actaully released.

Although this tracklist is impressive,I think it was a good idea to trim it down into a stunning a 2-LP set (SOTT).But let's have some fun here....if this 3-album set had been released, what songs should have been the singles?

"Housequake" should have have had a good video and a-side single with some insane energy!
Can you imagine if he had Albert Magnoli help him make a video for it (like Magnoli did for Batdance and Partyman)?

01. Rebirth Of The Flesh - unreleased but circulating on bootlegs (a 1988 rehearsal version was released in 2001). 02. Play In The Sunshine - SOTT but this was a slightly alternate version, circulating on bootlegs 03. Housequake - SOTT 04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker - SOTT 05. It - SOTT 06. Starfish And Coffee - SOTT 07. Slow Love - SOTT 08. Hot Thing - SOTT 09. Crystal Ball - released on Crystal Ball in 98 (but i'm unsure if it's the same version. All other versions are circulating on bootlegs anyway) 10. If I Was Your Girlfriend - SOTT 11. Rockhard In A Funky Place - released on The Black Album in 1994 12. The Ball - unreleased but circulating on bootlegs with poor sound quality, remorphed into Eye No on Lovesexy in 1988 13. Joy In Repetition - an alternate version was released on Graffiti Bridge in 1988, this version is circulating on bootlegs. 14. Strange Relationship - SOTT 15. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man - SOTT but edited down, this (longer) version is circulating on bootlegs 16. Shockadelica - released on the If I Was Your Girlfriend single in 1987. This version was the long version (a 7'' edit was also released). 17. Good Love - released on the Bright Lights, Big City OST in 1988 (an edit was rereleased on Crystal Ball in 1998) 18. Forever In My Life - SOTT 19. Sign O' The Times - SOTT but a longer version, this version was the (released) single edit. 20. The Cross - SOTT 21. Adore - SOTT but this version was without the crowd noise from It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night in the beginning and it's not circulating. 22. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night - SOTT but this version was without the segue into Adore and it's nor circulating.
All in all a perfect album IMHO! The only track that's missing to balance it perfectly IMHO is the Camille outtake Feel U Up (released on the Partyman single in 1989).
And I never understood why everyone thought Housequake coulda been a hit? I mean it's a WONDERFUL song but wasn't it kinda odd for mainstream audiences? [Edited 6/10/11 9:56am] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

All the songs that survived the transition from Crystal Ball to Sign Of The Times were identical versions, apart from Play In The Sunshine, which had a very slightly different intro segue (you can hear gunfire in the street sounds).
Aside from this, there wasn't any further mixing or editing done on the songs. It was just a case of removing songs completely and rearranging the tracklist into a double album rather than a triple. The only other change was that when U Got The Look was added, it originally had an ending (just like on the 12" version), but for some reason this was changed to a fade-out ending shortly before release.
I'm sure the original Rebirth Of The Flesh / Play In The Sunshine sequence is circulating on bootlegs, as is The Ball / Joy In Repetition. Shockadelica is the same as the full length version released on the b-side of the If I Was Your Girlfriend 12" and Good Love is the same as the version found on the Bright Lights Big City soundtrack.

Yes but before Sign o the Times and even before Crystal Ball, we have the famous Dream Factory July 18 1986 mix
1. Visions (Piano Piece with Lisa, axed in October 86) 2. Nevaeh ni ecalp a (Backmasking bit that went out with above) 3. Dream Factory (Same as Crystal Ball, left off SOTT) 4. Train (Also axed in October 86) 5. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker (Survived to become track 4 on SOTT Record One) 6. It (Also survived, Track 5, appears to be same version as SOTT) 7. Strange Relationship, slightly different with a sitar opening (And better) 8. Starfish and Coffee (Same as SOTT) 9. Interlude (Just a few seconds of silence) 10. Slow Love (Same as version on SOTT) 11. I could never take the place of your man (Same version as on SOTT) 12. Sign o the Times (Slightly different version to album and single edit) 13. A Place in Heaven (Breathtakingly beautiful song, axed because of W and L involvement) 14. Crystal Ball (A slightly shorter and less experimental version of track on the album) 15. The Cross (Same version as SOTT) 16. Last Heart (Same as Crystal Ball version) why this was axed is beyond me, its great 17. Witness for the Prosecution (Also axed possibly when his r/ship with Susannah went south, the song is almost certainly about Susannah Melvoin) 18. Movie Star (Same version as Crystal Ball, except the excerpt from Jam of the Year is missing from it - CB version is clearly later (1996-97) mix. 19. All My Dreams (Another excellent W and L song, and yet it was axed, this is like Parade Version 2.0, it picks up where ATWIAD and Christopher Tracys Parade left off, I hear a bit of a Mountains sound in it too).
Prnce started work on some of these songs in December 1985, but most date from Feb - June 1986 after Parade was released and before the tour. Some of the other songs from this period include tracks that ended up on Madhouse's 8. None of the songs sans Strange Relationship were Camille, and Tracks 1,2,4. 13, 17 and 19 were axed in October 1986 because of W and L being sacked, and many of the songs like Good Love, and If I was ur girlfriend date from this later period.
Seriously getting a hold of this album is totally worth it. Its that great, A place in Heaven and all of my Dreams are possibly the greatest WendynLisa tracks with Prince ever.
Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I notice no one has mentioned the song "Crucial" it was recorded in this period and was going to be on one of the Crystal Ball album versions. The song clearly dates from this period and is easily one of his best, why we had to wait until 1998 to hear it, is beyond me. It must have been recorded between Sep 1986 and Jan 1987 as its not on the Dream Factory album. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Crucial was recorded on September 13th 1986, after Dream Factory had been shelved and just before Prince started work on Camille. It was revisited on November 6th when Prince shelved the Camille album and expanded the project into a triple album (Crystal Ball). Eric Leeds added Saxophone to it at this time. However, it didn't last long as a Crystal Ball song, as Prince recorded Adore on November 20th, which then replaced Crucial on the album.

Does anyone know where the SOTT tracks were sourced from on the Pimpsandwich Crystal Ball? They sound HORRIBLE compared to the outtakes. A quick glimpse in ProTools confirms they they're TOTALLY brick-walled. [Edited 6/12/11 10:55am] "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."
