Prince and Death Metal

Most Prince fan's that I've met, appreciate all types of music. I am curious to see if any of you enjoy Death Metal. It is not uncommon for me to play Prince then skip to some good ol'fashion Death Metal.

I listen to all kinds of metal! Mostly experimental post-black-metal stuff, but yeah.

I also play bass in a couple of metal bands, and sometimes a little Prince riff sneaks its way into our songs, hehe...

Metal is actually the one musical variety I don't like.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I can't listen to death metal, unless it's Opeth from "Still Life" forward, even then I'll take Blind Guardian or Sonata Arctica over them anyday. In terms of the Prince community, I don't think there's much love to be found. Prince probably liked glam in the 80's (to an extent) though, and there's a lot of Queen in 3 Chains 'o' Gold. That seems to be the closest he's gotten to metal.

i wouldn't class these as heavy as death metal.

Yep, but mostly old school bands like...

Death and Carcass. Those are the ones I still listen to fairly regularly. Went through a big Cannibal Corpse phase when Chris Barnes was still in the band, too. I love the sound of EXTREME Metal---the grind, blast beats and over the top tecnicality of some of those bands, but I only listen in doses. Not an everyday thing.

As for Metal, the stuff I listen to the most nowadays is Iron Maiden (especially the first 5 records). Maiden isn't Death or Extreme Metal, but they're more my speed these days. I saw them live for the first time in July 2010 and Prince for the first time March 2011. biggrin

My 18 year old son listens to that garbage (sorry, I loathe it), and also likes Prince too. He says his favorite Prince song is 17 Days. He also likes a lot of the slow jams.

I never said they were, 'Arctica is one of the most power metal bands that ever power metalled.

Hate it!

A friend of my husband is in a death metal band and has been for 25 years. I've since them perform a few times, but not in many years. I just can't take it anymore. It's bloody awful.

Prince's music is rooted in gospel where there is no room for that "type" of music which is mostly negative and dark.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that liked TOOL and Prince.lol I actually saw them both on the same night in Las Vegas. I caught TOOL at the Palms and then saw Prince at 3121, it was one of the best nights of my life. As for death metal, I never could get into it. I agree with you about the vocals. I had a friend that used to listen to it and sometimes the music sounded cool but then the vocals would start.

I'm not a huge fan, when I go for metal it tends to be the melodic stuff, but I do listen to Slayer & Napalm Death on a pretty regular basis. When you're in the mood to be totally obliterated by sound, it sure works.

What would a positive death metal band sound like? There must be Christian ones, right? Cuz there's Christian every kind of music now. Are they like, at war with Satan? "Spilling the blood of evil, desecrating the carcass of unkindness, gnawing on the fleshy entrails of sin!"

I almost went to the 5/7 Prince show with my buddy who plays in BRUJERIA. He was really bummed he couldn't go... but tickets to the Pacquiao fight took precedence. I told him that was the metal decision.

There were a few Christian Death Metal bands back in the day. I think Mortification was one and a handful of others. People would say that Christian Death Metal was an oxymoron... but, it was argued that the term Death Metal was used to describe the music, guitars and guttaral vocals---not lyrical content. I tend to agree.

That's my thing too... particularly Fates Warning and 90's Dream Theater.

Why is this on this forum though?

A thread on "Death Metal" could have been posted on the Music: Non-Prince forum. Still after dozens of posts there is no evident link between Prince and Death Metal established. I understand that the thread is supposed about the contrast between being a Prince fan and also listening to extreme metal, but you could compare a lot of things in a similar manner.

There was that old rumour about him playing a Cannibal Corpse song during a sound check or aftershow, though. I could see him attempting to do death metal just for laughs at a sound check, but I doubt he has bothered to learn how to play a song by them. We haven't heard him even covering stuff like NIN, even if he's reportedly been into it at some point.

I hope not, as a lot of death metal and hardcore metal is racist and violent in its lyrics, its known for a fact many death metal groups are anti black, anti gay and anti Jewish, also their music is crap. I fail to see the merit in some guy shrieking or grunting, with frantic drumming and some guys with hair over their whole faces boning away at a guitar, the Lord will catch up with them. Also the gory covers on the albums of party decomposed corpses and skulls and blood are pretty unpleasant.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
