I understand the concerns! FLAC cannot be imported into ITUNES, it needs conversion so its a fair question.
Sure we are please with the full quality FLAC for CD burning but for copying to mp3 its not easy and the files would take up far too much space.
I am using a free converter called FreeRIP, available on download.com, this can convert FLAC to MP3 for your Itunes enjoyment!!
If there is a better way that all you 'leggers use then let the forum know!! [Edited 5/19/11 9:30am]

i didn't mean to sound rude or anything but i might've gotten a little carried away there
i just think that mp3 should be outlawed it cheapens and rapes the artform that is music imho

I can dig it...
Isn't it interesting that at the same time video is pushed to higher quality HD, audio is being squashed by low quality mp3 and the loudness wars. At the same time video players and tv's get better while audio players come with crappy earbuds...
crazy world indeed! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I understand what you're saying, but for those of us like me who listen to music at work or in the car via the iPod, mp3s are just a great convenience. I also like to listen to music while walking, and FLACs or even WAVs just take up way too much space. I convert to mp3s for the iPod, and listen to the higher-quality stuff at home. I think alot of others probably do the same. I'm willing to sacrifice the sound quality for convenience * * *

No one really cares what anyone does with these Flacs for personal use, be it converting to mp3, ripping a CD, etc.
The problem arises when someone shares lossy mp3s freely on the web and those files end up being re-encoded to Flac, shared again and so on. The product will of course be diluted after this scenario, which is why most free bootleggers respectfully ask that only the Flacs make the rounds.
I think most of us have made the necessary lossy files from this boot for our iPods and mobile players - but they stay our hard drives. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I've been looking for an easier way to decode FLACs. Currently I use winamp to blow it up into a wav and then use iTunes to squish it down into an AAC.

Media Monkey is the best music management software, in my opinion. It handles FLACs and converts them to Mp3 with ease. It's generally better than iTunes in alot of ways. I use it all the time and love it. * * *

Does it convert to AAC? I tend to prefer Apple's mp4/AAC/whatever format because really the quality can't be beat in a compressed format.

For the PC, I've never had problems with FreeAudioConverter: http://www.dvdvideosoft.c...verter.htm
For Mac, XLD is wonderful (and free): http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Yes indeed
It also makes fixing and customizing tags, removing duplicates a breeze.. and it's volume analyzer/leveling is excellent [Edited 5/19/11 13:22pm] * * *

well, yeah. and that's the case with many tracks. but since we're talking about a live show, I really dont' see your point.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I wouldn't say it's the case with many tracks. Anyway, I shouldn't have put it that way. The version of "When Doves Cry" on "From The Soundboard - 1984 Birthday Show" is maybe closer to the studio version, but it's completely boring (to me) at the same time. The only positive thing I could say was that it's an "interesting" version from an historical point of view. So I guess my point was: "more faithful to the studio version" does not imply "more enjoyable/interesting".

It's about shitting time that numpties like apple (and others) started to support lossless formats on their portable players anyway (apple has apple lossless, but still...).
All this fannying around converting shit is a right pain in the titter at times.

Well, at least .ogg, .ape and even .wma seem to have fallen off to the wayside. Too many formats probably stunted the growth of portable digital audio.

Yes, I think I only ever downloaded one thing in the ogg format.
But i mean, how hard can it be for apple/Sony etc etc to get on board with FLAC?
Anyway, just a little early morning niggle of mine.

FlacDrop (.FLAC > .WAV) and then LameDrop (.WAV > .MP3).
In fact, most of the time you can just drop .FLACs on LameDrop and it will happily convert them to .MP3s (but occasionally it refuses to).

.OGG is still used plenty of times these days. In fact, it is one of the core technologies in HTML5's <audio> and <video> implemententations in Firefox because it is an open/free format. (See also http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ontroversy )
AFAIK it's also the format most audio clips on Wikipedia are in.
.OGG is vastly superior to .MP3, and it's sad that it had virtually no support amongst makers of music devices.
I could never understand the point of .APE: wasn't particularly better than .FLAC, but required clumsy software that only worked on Windows. Horrible crap. © Bart Van Hemelen

I still can't get over this boot...it's perfection to me, both the quality and the content. I had long been bored with the Purple Rain era, but this has totally reignited my interest. Thanks again to the people responsible.
I've been playing flacs on Cowon players for over 5 years.
