I love it.
Musically, nice and cold. Lyrically, nice and warm.
If you like it, then who cares what others think?

I remember listening to SOTT on its release day and the first thing I thought when I heard "IT" was that is was Prince ripping himself off. This was When Doves Cry with a hard on....and not in a good way. .

It's a great song, there's no filler tracks on SOTT

im going to like it regardless. but i see it getting an extreme amt of hate on here, like i see ppl say it is the only song that shouldve been left off SOTT, so it really makes me wonder why others feel like that

i've never noticed the similarity, but i see what youre saying...the drum beat is similiar, but lyrically and vocally totally different.

One of the songs never spoken of on what many call to be an exquisite album SOTT . I adore it and think it's sort of a sexual release lyrically and musically for Prince on this album. I didn't even know there was a "hate" for it... Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I absolutely love the song since the first time I heard it. I can't understand why so many people here dislike the song.
Think about "IT", think about "IT" baby... Fucking on your mind, feels so good must be a crime!

I It Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

But seriously, I like 'It', it's is a great track, but it think it could have sounded better with a different arrangement maybe. Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

Maybe too simple? Maybe it's place is already taken by Hot Thing? Dunno, personally I love it. Claustrophic and totally Prince.
BTW, I'm never coming back into this thread because of that damn Pennywise gif!

same here, it's unadulterated carnal lust. one of my fave tracks off any album. love the way the vocals break off for the bassy drum pattern. it's as if he's saying "enough talking about IT, now let's fuck!!" the way he uses the gospel type backing vocals on the live version on sott dvd is pure genius. the little fella's unique way of fusing sexuality and spirituality that lovesexy took to another level. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

this song is great, gritty & dutty his vocal indicate he must have been carressing himself during the recording, he got the sound effect just right

IT is hot! What's not to like? It's totally atomospheric, and has a great beat and vocals. "Get up off that grey line"

I love the song now, and I'm kinda shocked that so many people picked it as the worst SOTT song. But, I actually didn't start liking "It" until about a week ago. I would guess the reason people don't like "It" is because it sounds strange, the music is repetitive (and slightly annoying) and it probably goes on a little too long. [Edited 4/20/11 10:24am]

I love the song, but I can imagine people feeling otherwise...
The lead singing is pretty strained & exaggerated - so if you're not "on that ride," if you don't relate to that, then the singing would be pretty annoying. Same thing with the drums, perhaps. Just a guess.
You have to relate to something, to love it. The stronger the content, the more you could love OR hate it.

For me, when I listened to the record I was disappointed after the inventive music and arrangement of SOTT, Housequake, Dorothy Parker... "It" just didn't sound cool. It was not funky, not really spooky, kind of basic, and had a cheesy beat structure and sound.
I like it better now because of the intrumental parts at the end, the solo, etc...believe it or not, the Joffrey Ballet performance made me like these parts more, 'cause it showed me how it could be seen as kind of epic and dramatic with the gongs.
But what I wrote above was definitely my opinion in 1987. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
