Just recieved my copy of New Power Soul....

Im sorry i think its a terrible album. I remember people mentioning a song called "The One" on here and praising it.....I think its shit...not even memorable at all...dosent have a melody that stays in ur head and the lyrics arnt exactly "Adore" are they? lol...however there is 1 song that has made my purchase abit worthwhile the song called "Come On"....yet even that isnt a masterpiece after the first chorus it just dosent seem 2 build up in structure or go funkier. The crowd chants are extremley tacky and dont even get me started on the plastic sound..10000000 times worse than Emancipation!...who knows maybe its a grower...hope so smile...what yall think of the album?

I remember, when receiving it, thinking:

"At least it's better than the usual R&B crap out there"

And I still think that way.

When i first got it, I also didn't like it for like a year....

Then one day I listened to it with no expectations, just wanted to hear something different...

And it's actually a very enjoyable, cool album with some great songs... "The One" is a great song...

Lots of great funk songs on there... "Freaks On This Side!"

Give it a chance or put it aside for when you're in the mood... There's a good chance it'll grow on you like it did to many others.

I've never liked 'The One' either. It seems like Prince on auto-pilot to me. 'Oh, one for the ladies!'

Alguy

I don't really count it as a Prince album, it's really an NPG project, but he put himself all over it so it would sell.

How much input did the band actually have, though? Aside from Kirky J's programming?

Here we go again...

To answer Quasar, whom I bet already knows this, no more than on Emancipation or Rave.

It is a Prince album. He wrote the songs, played most of the tracks, sang all the lead vocals, put his picture on the cover and starred in the video. BUT, if anyone wants to insist it has more in common with Gold Nigga or Exodus, fine, whatever. Pass the joint, it must be great stuff... biggrin

That's what I thought, but I was asking Alguy since he doesn't think it's a Prince album.

I agree with you, Goldnigga & Exodus are band albums. As in they have the actual incarnations of the New Power Generation contributing.

A lot of the praise for the standout tracks on the album comes from the time of release when fans were so disappointed by this and the previous album, that they'd literally grasp at straws for a half decent track. 'Come On' is passable in the same way 'Dance 4 Me' is. 'The One' is too maudlin for my liking, but it presses all the usual Prince ballad buttons (as worn out as they are), so it gets a pass too.

The crowd samples are there to make it sound like a party record - several of the songs were quickly thought up and built on chants from the JOTY tour concerts, and it shows.

Apart from the opening track, NPS is funky as a shit sandwich!

It's a real grower and takes time to sink into yur head.

Come on, Freaks on this side, Mad sex are all dirty, sexy funk.

Another jam o the year, think it ain't, when it is!

For me it's on par with C&D, Batman, and ATWIAD. Liked it when it came out and still like it now. Mad Sex got some radio airplay when it was released, There was nothing as funky at the time. Love the remix too.
Great tracks: Mad Sex, The One, Come On, freaks on this side, and Wasted Kisses.
I sit in the "it's really a prince album" camp.

Adorecream

I agree with the original poster, its terrible, not even worth the $1.50 I paid for it in 2004, the One is kind of okay and Wasted kisses are good. Okay the rest has some hi energy jams, but its just soul and funk lite by numbers, theres nothing new or exciting and certainly like Optimus said, no songs to truly threaten Adore on it, then again what song could.

Its garbage, only buy it out of mercy, or if you are a completist who needs every note he ever committed to wax, tape, disc, net whatever,

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Revolutionary

(eye Like) Funky Music - For me is like hearing Camille again - This is the one track on this album that gives me Camille/Parade/SOTT vibes. I actually made a custom re-edit and removed Doug E. Fresh-

No diss to him, but it didn't need him and it ended up overdoing & confusing the jam. I still think the programming on "Freaks On This Side" is actually super hot and innovative- the people calling the programming "cheap" are totally missing the point of the production values in my opinion. I'll agree at first listens, the whole CD can sound real off. All I know is I couldn't imagine not having (eye Like) Funky Music- I was very happy to see the informal return of Camille.

I personally like the album. Some songs grew on me quicker than others. But they grew on me. They're not laways in the top 10 albums played on the Prince-pod, but still a great album.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Co-sign this. If I judged music based on the 1st listen, I wouldn't listen to 95% of the music in my possession. When it comes to Prince, I wouldn't listen to anything but Purple Rain, Prince, Emancipation, and 2010 if I went based on 1st listen! Thanks to that 2nd listen I LOVE albums like Planet Earth, SOTT, 3121, Graffiti Bridge, Musicology, prince

And if at first and second listen you still don't like it, periodically put it on to see if one day it hits you. That's what happened with me and Lovesexy and Rave. Sadly I'm still trying with Parade, ATWIAD, TBA..

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
