Just put the album away and play it again on a friday night.

I quite fondly remember 1998 due to the tours (multiple!) that he did of Europe that year.

The album works better with that context for me.

Me too, NPS still twangs on my nostalgia strings.

I'm the authority on my opinion yes, and we're on a fucking Prince site, the guy made a career of swearing and you're whining about the word 'shit' - shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

I quite like "Wasted Kisses." "Come On" is a good track but the live version he did on Leno (which featured much more guitar) is much better. I never really got the hype about "The One." Otherwise this always struck me as his most disappointing album (maybe tied with Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic). If this is what freedom sounds like get Prince back on the "plantation!" During his "war" with WB we were kind of led to believe that they were holding him back so I think most fans had high expectations for his new, "free" music but for the most part he didn't deliver. Just my opinion but the music he recorded circa 1997-2000 was his creative nadir, even worse than the late '80s/early '90s. A lot of it sounds fairly generic and uninspired.

after a few more listens....the only tracks worth listening 2 are as follows...bare in mind none of them i consider classics,

Until Ure In My Arms Again & When U Love Somebody - Nice "memorable" Melodys On Those 2

Come On & Funky Music - Nice but dont really seem 2 build or go any further...however the rap ruins the latter!

The One - Like the vocal work.....but forgettable....dosent stick in ur head

escandaloso

I recall I was really anxious when I bought the CD but felt so-so after the first listen. What really pissed me off was the NPS concert in Concord. A half assed attempt for a half hour show. Then a three hour drive back to the Monterey Bay.

Just listen to e.g. Return to Zenith, or to the Stuttgart show, etc from that year... Maybe the Tivoli aftershow?

You shouldn't be so quick to judge on what appeara to be your first listen. The One rules.

But they are right :-)

That album is when it all went boobies up and it was a stark warning of everything to come....a real watershed when the quality and love Prince put into his music was ditched for rushed mass-produced pap and a sense of musical mid life crisis chasing the 'younger' sound. There have been a few exception since but on the whole my unbroken interest of Prince (on cd) finished with that dungpile of an album and has only sparked now and again since

Many on here think of it as a horrible album. It's just a bad Prince album.

It was sort of the wanning of the symbol years, which started out really strong but went downhill after a while with "Emancipation" (too bloated and unfocused). It was an NPG album (for better or worse) but it does have some strong songs on it. Just overall, it feels like with all the freedom, Prince could be doing something much stronger. In many ways it seemed like he just wanted to jam but there are also some strong attempts at being very commerical as well. It just isn't great.

Some people claim that the song "Wasted Kisses" was written about Prince's son. The song contains the following lines:

Cheap perfume all over those burgundy stockings
The ones I tied U up with
I shoulda just left 'em there

Best Track: "Come On" live on Jay Leno, great stuff!

It is not Prince's best, but not his worst either. There are a few tracks on there that I really enjoy. And a few that are very lame.

It is just a throwaway party album if you ask me, and quite enjoyable as such!

It's not my favorite, but for The One alone I keep it around.

Like others have said, it needs more than one listen.

I love the mood of The One...gives me shivers.
