This reminds me of the scene in Purple Rain where Billy said "nobody digs your music but, yourself' I may be misquoting that but that's what I think when I think of P's music. I don't think he writes any of his music thinking of his fans. It's all based on personal life experience and his own fantasies and life expectancies. So when we see him live, we enjoy the music he enjoys performing. Yeah, we have or favorites and songs we don't like so much. Bottom-line, we are experiencing life thru rose coloured glasses, so to speak.

Newpower Soul is a highly enjoyable album.
Prince should never release an out n' out rock album.

Controversial or not, I agree with Romeoblu. TGE -although certainly not a bad album- is vastly overrated in my eyes, I'd rather listen to 20Ten personally. Same here!

a) uneven as a fart and with 4 or 5 unlistenable songs. Sorry, it's his worst album of the 90s, I even prefer the Tr...wait, i forgot that album existed...
b) LotusFlow3r was an artistic success

The song Purple Rain is weak. I can't listen to it anymore. I prefer the punk rock version by the Teddy Bears Stockholm, at least that way it has some energy and fun.
Also.. I hope Prince goes broke completely to the point that he is forced to sell his vault with music so it can be released as-is. Don't want to wish him dead, but that seems to be the most likely way that that will ever happen. I'm still trying to come up with ways that do not involve him dying, while we still get the music (however good or bad it is/was) without having the music go through his changed opinion/outlook lense.
Oh... and Come, The Vault, Crystal Ball and Chaos and Disorder are better than the Gold Album. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

It's not the only way. He'll release old material if he gets the money he wants, even if it goes against his stated beliefs. Why else did the Black Album get released in 1994? I hope the W2A tour earns enough money that he can pay off his debts and show WB that he still has a solid fan base and that they could make money with a reissue campaign. If WB thinks a reissue campaign would be profitable, they will pay Prince the money he wants to make it happen. They could still release everything all over again after he dies with more bonus tracks and some marginal improvement in sound. Admit it, there is no limit to the number of times some Prince fans will re-buy his music if we think we're getting something new that we want. I have pre-ordered the vinyl reissues of DM, Controversy and 1999 even though I now have original vinyl pressings and I have no way of knowing whether the reissues will sound any different. Whoever ends up buying WB will look at the Prince catalog and realize that they could be making more money off of that.
Deals get done when everyone thinks they are better off with a deal than without one. Just look at what happened in Congress a few minutes ago. Prince may be a lousy businessman but he does know math. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Let me repeat that I don't wish him dead. In fact, I hope he has all the happiness he wants and leads a fulfilling live.
That said, I do think that money is a motivator, but it seems Prince has always been a person that wants adulation for what he is now, even though he lives in the past a lot. I fear that everything he does is looked at through his "now" lense. I mean, I'd love to hear the re-recordings of all his albums, but I fear that a lot of it will be like 1999TNM. If we're lucky, it'll be like Large Room With No Light, but even that... And I fear that he will do that to a lot of his songs.
Best case is that he censors the songs, like Sexy MF and Rebirth of the Flesh, but that's already quite bad. He really should take a page out of the book of the Cult. Just look at what they did with their album Love, they made it a 3 cd version: the original album, remastered, then a cd with mixes and b-sides and then a cd with demos and unreleased tracks from the sessions.
If Prince would allow someone like Alan Leeds to go through his vault and create sets like that (with maybe a live show instead of mixes and b-sides for albums up to Controversy) and end it with a box set with one show for each of his tours (well, up to the SoTT tour, Lovesexy is where he fell of his pedestal for me), that would cement his place in history and give him something to be proud of.
But it's a pipe dream. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

- Purple Rain is his best album. - Minimalism is not the answer to everything and gets boring after a while. - Lovesexy is not overproduced and people who think so should go back to listening to their generic R&B records or whatever fucking shit they usually listen to. - Several songs that ended up on Graffiti Bridge should have been on SOTT. - "Forever My Life" could have been titled "I'll probably never manage to listen to this from start to finish in my life". - The "choir" part at the end of "Adore" is tacky. - Vanity sounds like a man. - Eric Leeds' playing went to shit over the years and it's also the biggest problem on NEWS. - Most of Prince's rock songs are fairly mediocre, but the fans hype them up each time there is one included on a new album. - People who think Prince hasn't done anything good since [insert any year here] or that there isn't a single good song on [insert any album here] suffer most likely from a mental disorder. - People who use pictures of Prince from the Dirty Mind era as a proof of how attractive he is most likely suffer from a mental disorder.

I love Tony M , IDC what people say i dig the work he did with Prince and i don't think he was a bad rapper at all.
I think the ending of Temptation with him talking to God is brilliant Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

For You was pretty boring His 2000's music has kicked total @$$ Dirty Mind is not that prolific Private Joy was a second rate dance pop song compared to later releases The harmonica in his 09 shows was a disaster/it just did not sound right The keyboards sounded cheesy during the euro shows last year Beginning Endlessly is as strong as anything from the eighties He should lose the female back up singers If Prince was as sexual as he was in the eighties it would be icky given his years/we all have to learn

They're my controversial opinions.
Vanity's speaking voice sounds like the voice Dave Chappelle used when imitating Prince in that skit.
Prince's rock songs tend to get overrated here and there's always a lot of hype about the rock track on the upcoming record. Of the more recent ones, "Dreamer" was good, but a bit underdeveloped as a composition. "Fury" is a good song as far as the songwriting goes, but we all know how the studio version was received after first hearing the live version. But "Guitar", "Cause & Effect", "Wall Of Berlin"? Not sure about how 90s stuff like "Endorphinmachine", "Chaos & Disorder", "I Like It There", "Da Bang", "One Of Us" or "So Far, So Pleased" is comparable to stuff made by other artists during that decade. Now, if we're going wa-a-y-y back to the early stuff like "I'm Yours" and "Bambi"... well, that stuff is just plain silly. Don't play to friends without expecting giggles.

Some of them may be overrated, but Let's Go Crazy, The Cross, Electric Chair...classics. "Get up off that grey line"

Enorphinmachine, to me atleast, is prince's best rock song period. Everything about the song rooocks. I dont see it as being something that other 90's bands were doing, its far superior to anything that came out in the 90's that i've listened.
I agree that songs like chaos and disorder, i like it threre etc are no better than the 90's bands, but come on endorphinmachine is classic.

I have a new controversial opinion: Prince's original CDs from at least 1986 do not sound as bad as some people have suggested in comparison to the vinyl. "Raspberry Beret" is an extremely corny song.A few years earlier,he was doing stuff like "Head" and "DMSR" but beginning in 1985,he began releasing songs that grandmothers could sing along to

On every Prince album I was always able to find something that i liked, but NON of the 36 tracks on "Emancipation" did anything for me. To this day my opinion has never changed. What a waste of "freedom" that album was... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Exactly, that's the reason for my original phrasing. I think Gayle Chapman left sometime in the middle of the second album and Lisa showed up for Dirty Mind. Thres's really not much Pre-Lisa..LOL Check out my tribute to Prince

Grandmothers may have been been able to sing along to "Raspberry Beret", but they'd be singing along to not-so-ambiguous lyrics about a boy losing his cherry to a girl in a barn while horses watched. "Get up off that grey line"
