Ok here goes....

1. Parade is such utter crap to me, other than Kiss, which is a gem of a song and shouldn't have been put on such a cd with such crap.

2. 1999 isn't that good as a whole, sure its got bright spots like LRC, DMSR, 1999, but I'd rather listen to any of his music 2004-present.

3. Uptown isn't a cool song at all, I actually hate it. Much like other songs that seem to get people to screaming: SAIMH, Mountains, 17 Days...UGHHHHH. I'd rather hear him play great songs like Endorphinmachine, Blue Light, The Ladder, and Baby Knows.

4. Graffiti Bridge is just as good a movie as Purple Rain! Great music on both, Prince looking fine(he was hotter in GB), and Morris being funny. The only difference is PR has a better plot and Appolonia instead of horrible acting Ingrid Chavez.

5. The Revolution is overrated, in fact, they were his worst band and most boring, the NPG is at least exciting....NPG rules! I'll take LG over W&L anyday!

6. Mani was the prettiest woman Prince has ever been with, the others were all blah. That's not counting Sheila E and Appolonia though.

7. 3121, 2010, Musicology, and Planet Earth are better albums as a whole than 1999, Lovesexy, ATWIAD, Parade...though the latter albums have brighter spots with AnnaStesia, LRC, Kiss, which are in the top 20 best songs of all time. Rave is better than TRC, Graffiti Bridge is better than Parade, MPLS is better than Lotus

8. Prince is a really good actor, and I like his rapping. It makes him interesting.

9. The Black Album sucks..it only has 1 good song-W2RIL! Glad he put out Lovesexy instead!

10. Musicology-2010 is his BEST lot of 5 consecutive albums. SOTT-D&P is almost as good, take out Batman and add prince and its better.

How old are you?...LOL

I think this post is more reactionary than controversial - seems they just went through the past couple of pages and chose a bunch of topics to be contrary about. wink

i'm sure this has been covered already, but 'All My Dreams' was the exact point at which Prince lost it with The Revolution because it sounded total second cousin to Dorothy (ie practising homosexual)

Parade is a very uneven and unsatisfying album.

Controversy is a better album than Dirty Mind.

"Moonbeam Levels" is VASTLY overrated by fans, and replacing it with "Free" on 1999 was the right choice.

"Everybody Loves Me" is a funny, enjoyable song.

"Purple and Gold" is a better song than either "Digital Garden" or "I Wonder U."

85-90% of Prince's instrumental work is boring.

I second that ... I was just listening to Moonbeam Levels and I'm at workin' doin' my thing of 4 1/2 hours sleep and I my eyes teared up. That's the effect you want a song or music to have on you ...

That's the exact effect it has on me, too. Prince slayed the vocals on that song, and even though the lyrics are a bit abstract, you can feel the urgency and power in his voice. The guitar and keyboards behind the vocals are just excellent.

I enjoyed Planet Earth

Me too. Despite the general fan consensus, I consider PE to be his best 00's release to date.

The title track is epic, The One U Wanna C is insanely catchy and should've been a massive hit. I am also very fond of All The Midnights and Resolution.

Better songwriting and better hooks than Musicology and 3121 combined.

My controversial opinion?

"Sign O the Times" is not his best disc by a long shot, and is pretty overrated in the fan community. I skip most of the stuff on it barring the title track, "It", "Adore", and "Strange Relationship".

I actually think his best disc is either 1999 or Parade.

Thats not controversial, its heretical, how can anyone not love SOTT and the Adore song, are they tone deaf or what. The song is a shimmering piece of soulful perfection. SOTT is a collection of funky and well written songs, showcasing Prince's mastery of several different genres of popular music (Sometimes all in one song) and is a deep deep album. The critics and most fans (Except some members who call themselves orgers) rave about it. I just can't for the life understand why its appeal is not near universal (Like 90 or more % of us in agreement over the sheer brilliance of that song and the album).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I would definitely say that it is uneven. The first four songs sound rushed and unfinished....very demo-like.He gets a good groove going on in "New Position" then the song abruptly ends! "I Wonder U" sounds like a strange interlude. It's like he was trying to cram so many ideas onto the album without taking the time to finish the songs completely."Life Can Be So Nice" starts off promisingly but then it becomes noisy and chaotic.

If it wasn't for "Kiss","Girls & Boys" and "Anotherlover" (three great tunes that save the album),I probably wouldn't listen to this album very much.

I think that's what he was going for. Those songs are a continuous suite, and they're supposed to have that calm, care-free feel of being on the French Riviera. I do agree that Life Can Be So Nice becomes kind of chaotic, but it has one of the best intros of any of his songs. The album would've been better had they included Alexa De Paris.

Yeah,I know that's what he was aiming for but i don't know.....it all sounds a little unsatisfying to me....like he was trying to do too much, too fast.It sounds rushed.I was so pleased when he released his next album 'SOTT' which was much more focused and on point.

I see a lot of non-controversial opinions in this thread (i.e. opinions actually shared by many fans):

  • "I enjoyed (...) The Rainbow Children"
  • "Prince hasn't released any interesting music since 2004"
  • "NPSoul is funky as dog shit"
  • "Had U is a great outro"
  • "'Love Symbol' is Prince's best album of the 90s"
  • ""The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" is just an alright song"
  • "The Gold Experience is NOT genius"
  • "The Black Album was decent, but inferior to Lovesexy"
  • "Emancipation bores me to tears"
  • "For You is average at best" / "For You was pretty boring"
  • "Adding Tony M to the band was crap"
  • "Chaos & Disorder isn't so bad"
  • "The SOTT concert film is Prince's best movie"
  • "He should lose the female back up singers"
  • etc.

But this is a fun thread.

Recipe for a "controversial opinion":

  • take any album X that's considered a classic (e.g. "Sign 'O' The Times", "Parade", "Lovesexy", "1999", etc.) and say that X is bad, average, or overrated
  • take any album Y that's considered bad (e.g. "Newpower Soul", etc.) and say that Y is excellent or underrated
  • same thing with songs (e.g. "Kiss" is bad / "Purple and Gold" is genius)
  • same thing with musicians/bands (e.g. Tony M is a good rapper / Dr. Fink sucks)
  • same thing with tours
