i have one, Purple Rain is far more musically adventerous than it is given credit by die hards. When Doves Cry is one of his most unique songs and very experimental too. Its unlike anything he did before. Same with Purple Rain, i dont think he had done a power ballad like that before. Computer Blue too is very unique, its more of an instrumental but what an instrumental. The rest of the album is standard pop/rock but i think these three songs show musical growth

Hmm, I'm not sure if I would call "The Beautiful Ones" musically adventureous but I don't think it's accurate to describe it as "standard pop/rock" either. The first half of the song is a pretty, although fairly standard, ballad but the second half is something altogether different. I would argue that it's one of the most intense songs that Prince ever wrote/sang. For me it impossible not to feel the frustration/desperation that Prince is feeling.

nice point railb, completely forgot about the beautiful ones. Proves my point even more . Purple Rain does show musical growth in atleast 4 songs and deserves more credit than it gets here at the org.

don't know what fans you're talking about, Purple Rain is probably his best album other than 1999 in my mind. Man was at the peak of his creative and commercial powers simultaneously. The minneapolis sound was in full force on these two albums, a sound he would increasingly and rapidly leave behind once everyone else had jumped on it. His distinct blend of Rock guitar, keyboards as horn parts with their unique bends and oscillations, not to mention the quirkiest, funkiest stuff ever laid down on wax by anyone, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki had more than enough of those things. Not as much as 1999 but plenty. there is a reason that it's remembered today the way it is today. So far as the beautiful ones, it took the riff from the hit song "Dirty Laundry" and used some unusual fifths for a base line throughout to give it a catchy, unique sound.

Prince actually loves his fans. Prince actually hates his fans. Prince fans love Prince. Prince Orgers love to pretend they hate Prince but know they love him even though he really pisses us off (but I didn't get the Lotusflower subscription so I ain't bitter, LOL!) Trolls be gone!
