Now, now...before we start bashin' Doug E. Fresh, the guy's a freakin' legend in the world of hip-hop. He deserves a lot of respect, however I, like a lot of you, just didn't see why they were running around making music together.

Not hating on either's respective talents, but together, there was absolutely ZERO chemistry, and whatever song they were doing sounded like shit thrown together.

Sometimes, I think Prince let Doug E. be a part of the scene (Doug was originally at one of his concerts, and wanted to rap with him, right?) because he was "feeling his roots" again, something a charter and respectful member of the hip-hop community like Doug fully understood. Remember, this is around the first couple of years of when Prince was all about selling stuff himself and retaining ownership, much like a few of the rappers were doing by selling tapes outta the trunk of their cars. He mentioned something about this during an interview around this time, IIRC.

Not too surprising to me: Two black artists

who were big around the same time whose

hooks and creativity were complementery.

Does it reflect what Prince's mindset was?

Mayhap. shrug

In the 90's Prince was so far behind the curve, that he finally listened to "The Show" and thought is was "funky fresh for the 90's"

..and the rest is history.

Yeah, they had no business together. Maybe Prince was trying to take another stab at the rap game, but this time with someone actually talented (unlike Tony M). Also, like alexnvrmnd777 mentioned, Doug E. Fresh is a living legend, so maybe Prince thought that hooking up with someone so respected would be a crowd-pleaser. Didn't he also hook up with Chuck D. and Eve in the Rave album (maybe that was the remix album)? Yeah, I never thought Prince and rap was a good mix.

I wonder what show you saw. P came to the D.C area with Dougie Fresh about 4 times and the crowds loved it. I think when it comes to traditional hip-hop the white orgers need to really shut the hell up. I do not know any old school rap fans who dislike Dougie Fresh and I mean old-school brother and sisters.

Some dummy put it in his mind that he was losing his listeners to the rap. He was already rapping to the sun comes up, so he didn't need to fall into those ruts. He tried some, but I'm glad he didn't step into it.
