You're an idiot. See? Isn't that much better than your choice of words? Idiot.

Please don't use the word idiot. Some of us may have family members who were born that way. Thanks.

Illuminations

Does Prince seem like the kind of person who would waste his time on twitter? Only idiots like charlie sheen and oprah winfrey get on twitter to make themselves feel better by having tons of followers.... Prince is above that and is not lacking in the self confidence department!!!

Seriously, I already said I didn't mean it in the manner you took it. I'm not going to explain how I meant it because it doesn't matter. If it offended you, my bad.

Whatever. It's just as bad as using "faggot" and "nigger" in a derogatory manner. Better for someone on a forum to call you out on it than someone in real life. It's dropped.

No it isn't.

I'm a Social Worker in the UK, working with people with learning disabilities. A lot of them have heard this phrase (not used as a medical term in the UK) and it really upsets a lot of those i have talked about it with.

It really hurts their feelings. It's only anecdotal evidence, but maybe it would be likely to hurt you if you had a learning disability?

I agree it's an oppressive term with a legacy of oppression behind it.

You know why it hurts their feelings? Because someone taught them that it should. What does that say? I have no idea.

Yeah - there are official organizations who use the word, e.g.

Association for Retarded Citizens The Arc (formerly Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States) - is the country's largest voluntary organization committed to the welfare of all children and adults with mental retardation and their families.

There are indeed "official" organizations that use the word "retarded" but disabled activists, "self-advocates," and disability studies scholars have opposed this term (and others such as "idiot") for years, have mounted public campaigns against its use, written books arguing against its use, etc. Generally speaking, groups and organizations that continue to use the term "retarded" are run by parents, religious outfits, etc. rather than the people who are directly affected by the term.

Nothing wrong with using it in this way, in my opinion.

I think the discussion we're having now is a lot better than talking about the intricacies of whether or not a fifty year old man is using a social networking site.

No it isn't.

Please enlighten me.

I didn't mean to sound like this is a sacred cow for me. I just think anyone who calls someone else a "retard" sounds like an immature, thoughtless person. I'm all for making jokes about any and everything (this is the internet, after all) but "the r-word" just irritates me more than it offends me.

I think people should be allowed to "name" themselves. That's very empowering.

Well that is an interesting point of view. And could be true. Only because, the term hasn't been used in any formal way in the UK and only as an insult. So, fair point.
