I don't care for some of the lyrics, but musically it's a masterpiece. I enjoy it live too. I love the guitar work on it.

Since I can't stand the usual misuse of the word 'classic' I'd say it's his last outstanding album.

And everything points that that will be the case for years to come...

i agree. i hadn't f'd with P in a minute but when i got TRC, i was like WOW. aggravated by the voice at first and disagree with the JW stuff but the music was SO strong, i got over it. this album basically re-introduced me to him, made me go back and fill-in the missing discs from the catalogue and keep up with later releases.

Still rates as my favourite album.

I go through phases with the others, always have something different in the car, etc... but for just sitting down and listening to an album start to finish, I can't go past TRC.

It is definitely a masterpiece in my opinion. Without a doubt, the best album he has done in the 2000s and probably since The Gold Experience. The musicianship, production and lyrics (yes I said lyrics) makes it a gem. I've never got into the message behind most of the songs or the Jehovah's Witness aura around it, but it was a breath of fresh air after a wild and bumpy trip he had musically throughtout the 90's.

It was like he picked up the baton that had been dropped since 1990. For the first time since Graffiti Bridge, Prince sounded like Prince again.

Loved it then, love it now even more. This was Prince doing what he hasn't done in a long time - deviating his sound. Someone else put it better, but one thing Prince has lacked since 1996 is a change in his sound. He used to sonically change every album, but now it has been almost 15 yrs of the same exact sound with 1 exception - The Rainbow Children.

Musically and sonically, you just can't deny this record. Sadly, it's gonna be one of his works like Come and ATWIAD that aren't gonna be fully appreciated by many others until the day he leaves the earth.

yes, it's as if people can't hear the music.

Funny, I don't hear the message! lol I couldn't care less about what he is trying to say. It means nothing to me. The only message I get is "we need to come together as one" and that's enough for me.

Prince is about music first, and I have always been able to ignore questionable lyrics. "ooh baby you're so good, aw shut up, this is just so you come" "work your body like a whore" "I'm gonna cover your ass with this sheet" never seemed to bother anyone, but "the theocratic order" does for some reason.

I agree with everything you both said!

I'll add though that the theocratic order stuff becomes sketchy because sometimes the message is that if you don't believe this then you are damned. That turns people off. I don't really feel he was condemning anyone with his earlier spiritual talk. It was more encouraging, etc. Some of his later religious work has been snide, rude, condemning, and condescending of people who don't believe what Prince believes. This is problematic. This way of thinking began on TRC, but it became much worse in later songs.

true, I do see that

I just figure if I don't like something Prince says, most likely he is not expressing himself clearly anyway lol

I can't put too much into his cryptic lyrics. Maybe the theocratic order was meant to be some other character speaking, or some kind of joke. Who can tell?

Every time these RBC threads come up, I am tempted to give it yet another shot. But the only shot i have left for that album is through my skull, and I am too young and have too many unfinished things left to do for that.
