With 1000s of songs since 1978, and millions of fans with varying tastes, you can't expect EVERY person to like EVERY song. neutral

So WHAT if they are songs that are "supposed" to be liked? Why? Because they were on the radio? Because someone decided that THOSE were the ones we should all like?

Calling a song a "classic" does not make everyone automatically like it... it just means it's lasted through the years. Or in the case of a few- irritated some of us through the years.

I agree, everyone has different taste. You can throw any Prince song title in a subject line, and I am sure you will get some who love the song and some who don't. What I would be curious to know is WHY virtually all of his mega-hits have been listed as "irritating". Is there something specifically about each song that makes it irritating?

As an example, for me I would say Tamborine is irritating because of the screeching (not screaming, screeching - there's a difference) at the end of the song and the overuse of what sounds like a bicycle bell.

I think perhaps his megahits might have been listed simply because they are so popular, have been played so often, and have gotten so much love, that some people have just gotten sick of them or they simply want to be contrarians. I mean, I've read here many times that people can't stand Purple Rain because it's been performed at virtually every concert. Is that a valid reason to not like it, because they've heard it many times before? I don't think so.

Just my twocents

Nadeara (did you remember to feed the cat?)

Horny Toad (not sexy)

Gotta Stop Messin' About (please do)

Escape ("Glaam Slaaam!")

Batdance ("Batmaaan!")

Glam Slam '91 (shit, here it comes again)

Well Done (not really)

The P (I doubt an explanation is needed)

Schoolyard (a good example why you shouldn't write songs about "gettin' it on" in the schoolyard)

Thunder (mainly the intro)

Solo (I'd want to like this)

We March (... and now's the time to press "skip")

Mr. Happy (I can't be the only one disliking this one)

Style (how ironic)

Freaks On This Side (I think I prefer the freaks on the other side)

The Rest Of My Life (waste of piano)

Undisputed (I have no reason to engage in an argument with someone so deluded anyway)

Mad (bad)

She Loves Me 4 Me (I don't really dislike it, I always just want it to end, hah)

Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance (bitch please)

Lolita (seriously, those drums...)

Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful (next time try writing a chorus)

To be honest, most of those have some interesting musical ideas, but they just have some profoundly irritating qualities to my ears...

Da Bang - the effect on the vocals is incredibly grating.

Make Your Mama Happy - just a little too busy and frantic for my taste

Undisputed - just a bunch of clatter that adds up to nothing

Big Tall Wall - ill-conceived and annoying on every level

a whole bunch of those High/Peace/NPGMC-era tracks. I can tell he was going for something, a little more decent and consistent than the few albums that preceded them, but the songs just don't do it for me. still a lot of "going-through-the-motions" in the sound and a lot of annoying lyrics that don't gel. yeah, he's usually a bit wacked-out with the political/philosophical/spiritual themes and statements in his music, but a lot of this is just him being a malcontent. and a lot of the music is just plain flat and uninspired.

Resolution - the Mentos jingle version of an anti-war song that says absolutely nothing.

there are tracks that i out-and-out HATE more than these. but these are the ones that irritate me beyond just not liking them. they are the opposite of music, to me.

As much as I respect Prince and like a lot of his work, there are a few better-known tracks I actually can't bear - they force me to the skip button:

Cream-I hate everything about this song, especially the guitar and 'shboogie bop' line

Diamonds and Pearls-totally overproduced

Any Ballad with a whispering, moaning girl trying to sound sexy

I would Die 4U - lyrics good, music no thanks

Take Me with U - Good drum intro; the rest is boring to me

The Arms of Orion - takes cheesy to a new level

Oh man!! Those 5 are among my biggest Prince favorites...

Still nice to see the diversity in tastes around here smile

My list of irritating songs would be;

1) Friend lover sister whatever...

2) Lets have a baby

3) Life O the party

4) Billy jack bitch (I know its a favorite here sad)

Liv 4 Luv

I believe that besides the obvious set playlist that radio stations have, it kinda like that mock station on the "Grand Theft Auto" game. The one where the announcer says, "We tell you what to love and we keep playing it until you do." But, in some rare cases, you do end up liking a song after hearing it for the millionth time. I couldn't stand Nicki Minaj's "Moment for Life", but now I do.

Oh and I do love your comment that I underlined. That is so true, especially here on Org.

I don't get the "sheep" mentality.

Not liking something doesn't make anyone less of a fan- unless they bitch about everything (then why bother?).

I've had experiences that some of the "superfams" only fantasize about. Trust me, not liking a popular song does not hurt my standing as fan. wink

Exactly, I'm not going to buy something that is the equivalent of him "spitting on wax." There comes a time when fans need to let the artist (any artist) know that some things just aren't acceptable. And if the artist shows that s/he doesn't care what the fans think/want, then it's time not to care about that artist. Unless you feel that an artist can do no wrong...then that's something else.

Yes... if an artist is only interested in pursuing their own personal journey, whatever that may be... why not just put a "Just for Me" stamp on the outside of the cd and stick it in their own rotation. I'm a huge fan, but lately I'm getting tired of being preached to. Not all of it, but it seems that if he sits on the toilet he expects us all to sit down and have a good brown showdown!!! And I ain't had my bran muffin yet!! lol
