Play in the sunshine!

That's my ring tone!

I love that one. It's also my alarm. Just to remember myself that things will change and life will be good again. And in the meantime I should be play in the sunshine lol

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Take away it's gonna be a long boring night, It, and Hot Thing...and then add:

Crystal Ball, Old Friends 4 Sale(orignal), and Witness 4 The Prosecution.

If he had done that..the 45 leg of the SOTT Tour would still be going on to this day.

mad No no no no no....can't take away It, which has always been one of my faves. Also don't get why people dis It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. Great live party track imo. Hot Thing is ok...but damned if it doesn't get stuck in my head for days after hearing. Also totally dig Eric's sax on that one. Seriously, leave SOTT the way it is, since it IS perfection.

Fave tho? really hard to pick just one...But I'll say Ballad of Dorothy Parker

sign o the times, the album, is pretty good but I wonder, contrary to the love for a potential tripple record crystal ball, if it would have had purple rain like success as a single record

just imagine ...

sign o the times

house quake

ballad o dorothy parker

i could never take the place of your man

the cross

u got the look

if i was ur girlfriend

strange relationship

adore

without the crap like 'it' and 'hot thing' and a few others there is nothing to bog this record down .. it probably would have been reviewed as even better than purple rain ..

it has in many magazines and newspapers etc been getting a higher rate than Purple Rain. Many reviewers put it as one of the best albums of all time. It and Hot thing is not crap. I love the desperate voice on It, and the james brown of Hot Thing. But you're probably right. That would make an even better classic, but leaving Starfish & Coffee out of this must be because you want it on another album, as it is probably one of his biggest classics. Kind of like Rasperry Beret 2. A good follow up that is.

oops i forgot about starfish and coffee .. no i would definately include it on the sign single record .. its classic .. the other songs are good but not unskippable by any means .. kind of decent filler in my opinion and i think what would have cemented this record as another top to bottom classic, would be a reduction in some of the filler esque tunes .. i love play in the sunshine as well and slow love but they arent as strong as the other songs by a long shot .. if i was ur girlfriend, while not a likely pop smash, could have taken on a 'the beautiful ones' type legacy .. under the right circumstances house quake could have a holla back girl kind of appeal on the pop charts .. on the other hand .. songs like crystal ball .. joy in repetition .. last heart .. dream factory .. shockadelica .. love or $ .. if included could have made this a rediculously fantastic double record if used instead of the filler tunes

I didn't get why someone would prefer It over a song like Adore, I didn't say I don't like the song wink

And thanks TDG for explaining that, I agree the coldness is what makes it a cool song, but I wouldn't rank it up as high as you did. I really love Hot Thing though.

I like most of the stuff on SOTT, but i like Prince's more obscure material, always have.

I actually don't rate the album as a whole that much, i'm not saying that i don't like it, because i do, i just think that there are better albums from the 80's, i think i prefered the album when it was The Dream Factory.

Hmm, I really need to listen to The Dream Factory soon. I don't think I'll agree with you, but that's only based on the songs that were on SOTT as well, haven't heard the rest yet. So far, I like the Camille Project more than those songs on SOTT from Dream Factory, which of course doesn't mean I don't like those Dream Factory songs. I've found out it's the other way round with me, I like the hits most of all and I find myself more quickly bored with the other material. Usually, I have one less-known song on heavy rotation for some time and then switch to another, while I'm having the hits on all the time. Perhaps that has something to do with me not being a long-time fan yet, but I'm not bored when Prince is playing Adore live instead of It.

If your choices were you could only keep one set of there between:

Hot Thing, It, and Beautiful Night....or Crystal Ball, Witness, and Old Friends(original)

If anybody in their right mind chose the first 3, I would also figure Jughead is their favorite off of Diamonds And Pearls, and that they think Wedding Feast is the best track off of TRC.

Hot Thing and It are not bad songs....just not that great. It uses the same percussion notes as When Doves Cry, only played differently...and is an ok song...

To suggest that Beautiful Night is a better long song than Crystal Ball is just plain insanity, which I cannot really respond to.

Witness Absoultely tramples 60% of the songs in Prince's entire valut, and is probably among his 10 best never released songs. So yes, I can understand somebody defending these 3 songs, but saying NO to the trade for the 3 I selected? I doubt hardly anybody would.

Its almost impossible to pick since this entire album is just perfect, but I have to go with Adore. This song is amazing!! If I Was Your GF is a really close 2nd.

I'm not a huge fan of "It" so I would trade it for any of the other three but I prefer "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" to "Crystal Ball." "Crystal Ball" is ok but I think it's a little overrated. I find it to be kind of meandering. For me "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" is a great song that just makes me feel extremely happy whenever I listen to it.

I'm not a big fan of "Witness 4 The Prosecution" either. It's not terrible but I don't think it is one of Prince's better rock songs. I kind of feel like the song never really clicks into a higher gear and it just stays in the same laid back groove.

I would personally trade "it" for any of the following:

- Crucial

- Last Heart

- Train
- Dream Factory

- Joy in repitition

Witness is a good track but i am not crazy about it. Same with crystal ball (nice drumming on it though)

Agreed. I quite like the individual bits that make up the song but as a whole it doesn't quite gel.

THE TITLE-TRACK. It's basically the song that holds the rest of the album together. Without this track, SOTT would be "just" an excellent pop/rock/funk album, but without clear focus/soul; hell, even the name of the album would be different... Dream Factory? Crystal Ball? probably...

I'd pick Adore as the second best song...

Impossible..... biggrin

I love all 16 tracks deeply.

But I can tell the 'worst' instead: Slow Love.

even this is actually not that bad either.

'Sign "☮" The Times' is a killer album all the way through. music
