OF4S, I know we don't always agree on this topic, and no disrespect, but where the heck are you coming up with this stuff? There is no "specific" look for Black men or women, it all depends on the DNA.

I'm saying because of various things, especially race mixing, there is no specific look for Black men/women.

When I say Black, I refer to a group of people who may or may not identify that way in America. Because it is a Social/Political identity. Not the same as someone saying they are Nigerian or Italian or Chinese or Swede etc etc

White is also a 'Social Political' term

Black as a social political term is also why people who choose to identify as biracial or multiracial have and do encounter strong resistance from black-identified americans.

There are many people who do not like the term Black(-American) and identify as African-American and do not see it as interchangible.

In the early 1980's I was a part of a Pan-African cultural group led by a Dr. David Anderson(Sankofa) He's an historian, and more spefically deals with a lot of the use of terms labels and the evolving or devolving(is that a word?) from the beginning of Africans being in America till now. He used the term Black only in specific spacing because of it's connection to the shift in the Civil Rights movement. He refers to himself and family as African-American because he deals only in cultural connections via West Africa and American cultural developments. And he is very much integrated and American.

Race identies in this country have shifted many times since Europeans Native-American & Africans 'met' on the shores of the new world.

Just like Iman, who is married to David Bowie, said that there is no specific feature for Africans in general, because they all come from various ethnic groups, and identify with the features of that specific ethnic group, so Black men with stronger African genetics does not necessarily mean they tend to have narrower eyes and wide noses.

Iman is correct, there are many ethnic difference in the indeginous African continent. But African-Americans don't come from the whole of Africa. they come from mostly (because of convienence and accessibility and less loss of trade) West Africa & Central Africa, mostly the East Coasts of Africa. Not north East or South Africa. And they ethnic group there are closer in genetic relation:Nigeria, Congo, Ghana and others. Many African countries resisted or did not allow the slave trade. Many countries were in accessible because of the Sahara dessert.

I have a lot of Africans living in my community from various parts of Africa, and I can tell you, that they are various complexions just like Black Americans, with various facial features.

Talking about African now can't be compared to then. We don't know what has transpired since then. There is race mixing in Africa, via Europeans & Arabs. It's a lot different now. And I know recent Africans too so I understand.

You have to factor in the region their ancestors were living in, as well as the climate, so no they don't all have the same characteristics, no more than people with strong European genetics do. For Black Americans, their DNA is very mixed, that's a fact, so it is not surprising that you may have one sibling, very fair or light-skinned and another dark-complected or with green, hazel or blue eyes. This is nothing new. That is just how it is with Black Americans and Black Caribbean families, and part of that, has to do with the history of slavery and the intermixing that took place in various ways during that time.

We can talk off line more if you want, so we don't take over this thread. Which seriously is dealing with more than 1 topic now lol

[Edited 2/10/11 7:41am]

Okay so we somewhat agree on some things here, and thanks for sharing that info. My point was that often I hear or read so much misinformation about Black Americans, and what some think they are suppose to look like, when in fact, there really isn't one "specific" look. They can be very, fair-skinned to dark-complected, with various facial features, and come from various cultures/sub-cultures.

I am also aware that there has been race-mixing in Africa since ancient times, so when I speak of Africans from Africa today, living in America, my point was that they, as well as Black Americans (native to the U.S.) also have various, facial features, and often times, that is based on their specific ethnic group. I can actually tell someone who is from Ethiopia compared to someone from the Congo. I have a family member who has a child from a woman who was born in what is now referred to as the Congo, and left there when she was 4 years old with her family who moved to the U.S. years ago. People often forget about the Black Caribbeans and they too, have various ethnic groups among them.

Like you said, if you would like to discuss this further, you're welcome to orgnote me or start a different thread in P&R since it is race-related.

lol I hear you 'cam, so were the people in my section. As a matter of fact the whole place was laughing. It was a funny moment.

It was a classic moment that is still funny. I'm still amazed at the media coverage it's gotten. None of the NYC news stations covered that Prince was in town but with this situation, it was everywhere.

With all that said, it would have been nice if they talked about Prince donating money to them schools but apparently, that's not as glamorous as Kim K. neutral

I agree Cam. He was in the NYC/NJ area since December performing, and only now the media paid that much attention to that particular concert, and the one on 1/18 when that gossip girl chic was onstage, and what was so important about giving her media attention? lol I've never even heard of her before then. lol

Then when Kim ot on stage with him, the same thing. You would think she actually madde some major and important contribution to society, yet I couldn't find the same amount of coverage on the money he donated to those 3 organizations. I guess Kim is the new Paris Hilton to the media.lol

Maybe you just have a taste for a lighter shade of chocolate. lol I'm sure Prince has relatives Reggie's complexion. They're just two brothas of a different shade, that's all.

Yes it does.

There are some people it doesn't matter though. Some 'white' people tan easy and others 'burn' get red.

I work with 2 people 1 Italian the other for French heritage on both sides (NY state) in the winter time they still hold a tan coloring. In the summer time they are seriously the same color of that darker scan of the Prince album.

My god-brother is biracial 1/2white1/2black and he now lives in Tenessee(military) and he just doesn't tan. I can show you pictures of him from year around and he's the same color.

For me I can get a nice tan, and then go to a lighter color in the Fall/Winter. But the only parts that tan of course are the exposed parts. When I take my shirt off my arms/forearms are reddishbrown and my upper arm and chest area are yellow lol

I was gonna make a comment but then I saw this last pic ^^^ and forgot what I was gonna type.

I'm not a fan of Kim or Reggie. He likes what he likes and I honestly don't find him all that attractive, he looks like a regular Black man, that I see every day.

Everyone has physical preferences and they shouldn't be knocked for that. It's when you decided you're NOT gonna "date" (for lack of a better word here) someone or a group of people based on stereotypes of what you THINK they are like.

**distracted by the zebra print bulge again**

Um...

Oh yeah. As far as Prince's skin, let's keep in mind lighting, which folks seem to forget about. Not every photograph has the same quality or is lit the same. Also, P wears makeup which can also slightly alfer skintone. I doubt it has anything to do with his diet.

And Shelby's outfits are hits and misses. I have no problems with her bald head, many Black women sport that style and I admire them for it cause it sure takes balls in this day and age where every Black woman is sporting a weave down to their asses.

All I know is that her boots on Monday night were rocking and they HAD to have been custom made, I'm thinking by the same person/people who make Prince's boots. She ain't no small girl (neither am I, so I'm not trying to be offensive, it's just a fact), and she was stomping and jumping in those boots like they were sneakers. I want me a pair. Shoot. The upper part of the ensemble I coulda done w/o, it kinda looked like she wrapped herself with a bedsheet. And honestly, I don't remember what the other two were wearing, Shelby is honestly the only one I notice.

I feel like they kinda pick out their own outfits... but then again John Blackwell had on one of those Chinese pajama looking things with the matching hat and I don't know ANYONE who would PURPOSELY pick that to wear on stage.

I was wondering how this thread spiraled out of control like this over skin color.

lol Prince was alway very fair complexioned. I'm that color in the Spring & Summer and lighter in the Fall & Winter. Prince was probably in the sun a bit when he took this pic.

no, its a misconception the being Vegitarian will cause your skin to lighten. But having iron deficent anemia can make your skin pale, and you are suseptible to getting anemia if you dont keep an eye on your iron intake, which vegitarians have to deal with.
thats all
I mean this is Prince from the same time and he's as light as the host. And they didn't use much make up then or would have definately used a wrong tone on him and Prince probably would have looked darker if they did...like on Lena Horn

LOL you made me laugh

Yes lighting affects people differently. But Prince was always very fair complexioned. He's probably not in the sun as much as he probably was in his younger years. But you can see in early pics around the same time as the album that make up or not he's very light, cause you can see his whole body for the most part and they don't put make up all on his legs and stomach and what not

but I always wonder does Shelby have some kind of condition or something because her head looks really huge. Was she always bald and just wore the hat scarves on her head to cover it up?
