Can you imagine how cool it was to step onto a stage in front of that many people for the first time in your life?

Of course, the fact that soon after, chickens were thrown at you, kind of takes the buzz off it. But still...

Sharing a pic I've found and which I've never seen before. It gives me this bubbly feeling inside.

Prince opening for the Rolling Stones. No idea if this is the first or second time and no idea who made this pic.

It gives such a cool impression of how huge and filled this stadium was, wow. And look at all that stuff on the ground... that was probably in the beginning, don't see no chickens laying around lol

Is this cool or what! And would this be the only pic that was made? Can't imagine.

My brother was at the L.A. show where Prince opened. he says its was nuts..bottles flying...dirtbags booing!

Not saying anything negative about The Stones but, people were there to see 'them' not Prince.

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I always wondered when a picture from those concerts would show up. There has to be some RS fan who took a random picture of Prince.

Definitely an honor turned sour...

After I let my mom listen to the recording, she was like "That was a setup..."

But I told her 'no not really cuz Mick Jagger (am I correct?) thought Prince was pretty cool and invited him'

But sure enough, I'm know that at least 3/4 of the whole crowd turned purple heads after Purple Rain, and maybe there are even some on this very forum... cool "

[Edited 1/14/11 9:58am]

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Does anyone know what songs were played at this show ?

Bambi
When You Were Mine
Jack U Off
Uptown (instrumental)
Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

The article said the crowd had a bad reaction to Jack U Off and would have had a better show if he didnt play it. I dont know why he played that song in the first place. Since the Single to Controversy was out already, why in the hell didnt he play Controversy. It woulda tore the house down.

I'm not friends with Dez but I just checked his wall (not protected) and yes, found the pic on 13 December. Does the book have more pics of this concert, that you can remember?

Strange that no-one has posted this pic before, that's why I'm wondering if there are more gems floating around. Every now and then something cool pops up, I find this a very special pic.

Thank you for the pic and the story.

I am new to the board and I had never read that story before. It had to be scary to get up infront of that many people, and even more terrifying when you think about how hostile they were towards him.

You can say alot of things about Prince but you cannot say he has not paid his dues and worked hard for his success. That's just my take on the man's career.

There's a bootleg floating around. It was the usual set for that period and included Jack U Off.

I'd like to hear that show...

Anyway, sadly, a very cool story... thank you for posting it...

I was at the Stones show in Philly 9/23/81... REM, George Thoroughgood, and Journey opened that show, and let me tell you... it was 97 degrees in Philly that day, we had trecked from NYC the night before, and all we wanted to hear was The Rolloing Stones. In fact, we purposely stayed in the parking lot to party instead of going in to hear REM ! Who were they in '81 to us ? nobody! We wanted the Stones... In fact, I clearly remember booing Journey... I never liked candy ass, teeny-bop R&Rers, and that's what I considered Journey to be in 1981. THANK GOD it wasn't Prince opening up in Philly! I can't imagine what my comments might have been back then as a senior in HS... I fully embrassed Prince as an musical guenius in '83 thanks to an older brother and a college girlfriend, but in 1981, I'm sorry to say , I was just not that open to "new" R&Rers, as sad as that sounds... that day I just wanted to see the The Rolling Stones

So now, 30 years (and 30+ Prince shows) later, I'm up at 2:30 am reading about Prince on the Org... I guess Prince got the last laugh on all those naysayers from 1981

Peace, Love and more Prince!

G

No, unfortunately not from this concert. But it has a lot of other great pics from the early years (all very small and bad quality). Let's hope Dez will post more of them in good quality on the web.

hug Hi Karen, it has been a long time, at least a year, if not more. Last email must be from 2009.

Since I didn't forget you I've checked your profile from time to time but the time between posts was long. And I had left for a while after being extremely annoyed with the way people treated eachother on here (not that it changed.. wink).

Everything is ok and I definitely hope it is for you and your husband too kiss2

Maybe I should see if I can get a copy of this book, is it the My time with Prince book? Is it worth buying?

No self-respecting Rolling Stones fan would throw a full can of beer - that would be a waste of good cheap beer. So Prince was being overly dramatic in that gif.
