I am the biggest Prince fan in my family but my 68 year old mother likes him alot. She always liked him a little bit but all that changed when I took her and my father to 3121 to see him. She thought I was crazy for going to so many shows so I had to have her witness him in person. I got them the VIP package and they had the second table from the stage. They thought he was great, I know I have said this before but she even said he was better than Elvis.biggrin When I told her I was going to Vegas again the next month she said she wanted to go again. She didn't make it that time but I thought it was cool she wanted to go back. Maybe you should take your mother to a show purplemookiebut, that is a sure way to convert somebody.

Now I just have to get my brother to a show.

Most of my good friends are music lovers and they acknowledge his talents.

lol. never get her even on a train....unless..do you have anything i can drug her and knock her out and then i weekend at bernie her to her seat and she wakes up just in time?

I am the only hardcore fan in my family....but my family is cool with Prince. They totally indulge me in my love for Prince and joke with me all the time with stuff like "when is Prince joining the family? or You ain't married him yet?" lol My Christmas and birthday gifts are always Prince related, especially the last couple of years. I'm anxiously awaiting a gift now my bro sent me that he says I will LOVE. My mom likes a few songs...D & P, Prince album, Kiss, and my sis likes a couple songs..Cream, Gett Off, Lolita. So they would all go to his show if he came close to where they live and tickets weren't so expensive, I'm the only one who would travel to see Prince. And non of my old friends are Prince fans, but all of my new ones are!!! biggrin And my family and friends all listen to me talk about him and will conversate with me about him all the time!

You are lucky that your family understands your Prince obsession.

Yes, its really nice too! Cause it makes it easier to be around them...cause Prince somehow or another pops up into every conversation!! And he has been the reason for my travels as of late, so they have to appreciate him too. Music is huge in my family and alot of us are concert goers, so they understand that part of it. A couple of my sisters even admit "Prince is a sexy mf." biggrin

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

my mom took me to my first Prince concert - she was a fan before I was. She was upset that I didn't take her to the concert on 12/17 in NJ.

My dad is indifferent about it "hey.. whatever floats your boat"

My cousin in Cali is the only other hardcore Prince fan in my family - everyone else laughs at me for being a fan or thinks he's weird.

I couldn't give 2 damns - I love me some Prince!!!

I'd say I am the only true Prince fan in my family. Everyone else grew up on Prince but they don't listen to his music anymore. One of my younger sisters is going with me to see Prince because she likes him too. She knows the classics but I'm the one who got on her nerves playing Prince all day long when we were younger and I'm sure she got to know the obscure and the bootlegs. I guess the reason she and I have a liking for Prince and other GOOD music is because we are older and our dad was a musician and we tagged along on to his rehersals and gigs in NYC clubs when we were young. WHile our younger bros and sisters have no clue about real music. All they know is Niki -friggin' minaj and Munchichi-lookin' Drake!! UGH!!!! disbelief

.......Oh-oh-oh, by the way...He plays guitar.

My dad thinks he is "a wee poof" but respects him as a guitar player.

Hi, I live in Ohio too (Cleveland suburbs). Where do you live?

Edited to say that I see in your profile that you live in Columbus (nice area). That's about 2 hours away from here. smile It's soooo hard to meet other Prince fans from the Cleveland area. I see tons of people at Prince concerts when he does a show here, but I don't know if many of them are on the org. They probably are; I just never thought to ask them. lol

A good friend of mine (who also lives in the Cleveland suburbs) and I have gone to Prince concerts. It's a lot of fun to have someone to hang out with who likes Prince. Most people I know either love him or hate him; there seems to be no inbetween. lol

[Edited 12/20/10 23:50pm]

I'm SO excited to "meet" another Ohioan on the org! Just yesterday I posted in the "Fan gatherings" forum asking who is from Ohio. There is only one response from a person just north of Dayton -- so now for sure there are 3 of us. I feel the same way you do -- there's always a ton of cool ppl who go to the Ohio P concerts, but it seems like they only come out when there is a concert. I would love to find more of us and maybe we can organize a happy hour somewhere between Cleveland / Columbus and all meet.

I'm excited to meet you as well. smile A meetup halfway between Columbus and Cleveland would be great! excited

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I am the other person from Ohio. I'm new to the org after lurking for a couple of weeks. I'm an hour north of Dayton but I have tons of family in the Columbus and Cleveland areas. I've recently converted a couple of nieces to Prince fans and my husband is too now. I would say I'm the biggest fan and most of my family tolerates his music if they are in the car with me. Unfortunately, I've never been to a concert but I hope to go someday soon!

But is that going to make me stop being a Prince fan? Hell no!!!!!!! [Edited 12/21/10 16:39pm]

Your post made me chuckle because my family has thought some of my musical choices are different as well. It changes though when I go to different concerts and especially when I got the chance to meet different bands over the years...At least with the music I listen to, you can understand what the artist is saying!

excited Nice to meet you. smile You definitely need to go to a Prince concert; they are a lot of fun! And it's great that you've converted some of your family members and husband into Prince fans. I don't even try to convert anyone in my family, because they have their own opinions of Prince (and they're not very good). lol

I remember recently while my parents and I were driving in the car, and a Prince song came on the radio. My mom called Prince a "jerk". falloff My folks don't like Prince because he used to sing sexual songs and whatnot. I don't think it would matter if I were to tell them that he is now a devout Jehovah's Witness. They have the "old Prince" image firmly implanted in their minds, and I don't think they would change their minds no matter how hard I tried. lol

u would thiink that my parents would like prince since the were in their early 20's in the 80's, but they dont at all! every one always asks me if im a fan cuz my parents told me about prince, but i became a fan one day when i turned on vh1 and purple rain was on. my sister and one of my brothers only listen to stupid music. and one of my brothers always says that prince is gay, which makes me SUPER mad! i dont understand why eveyone thinks prince is gay....just because he wears makeup, and awesome (kinda feminin) clothes does NOT mean he is gay! he has been married to a WOMON TWICE for god sakes! my other brother likes prince though, he listens to prince with me alot, and we watch purple rain together. im the youngest in my family, all of my siblings r in collage. But i did find an old purple rain cd in my basement so they must like him! smile sometimes i wish i could have been alive in the 70's and 80's smile

Half of the males think he's either creepy or gay, but somewhat respects his music, and the other half thinks he's bad and will listen/dance to him.

The females either love him, somewhat respect him, or think he's ignorant and full of himself, lol. Then there are those who know anything about him, besides Purple Rain and that he's too pretty to be straight.

I tend to shove Prince down my brother's and mother's throats, so they can pretty much now sing to the songs I blast in the house, lol. They're sick of em, but have no choice but to recognize him as a great musician.

Well, I married a Hardcore Enthusiast like myself. I would not have had it any other way. There are some days where if music is playing, it's Prince & The Related Artist. Wifey seems to be the only woman I know or have met in my life that can 'feel' where I'm coming from with that. I can literally talk about P all day and she just sits there and smile. You should see our house ... LoL

Full of memorabilia and a few choice items. We have a closet full of t-shirts, sweatshirts and posters. My immediate family does not understand my ... obsession to say the least. My immediate family are Sunni Muslim and from time to time it is discusses that my love of the music and the 'brother' may border on 'idolatry' but, I know and understand that P is just a gifted man who lives that gift and his music is the soundtrack to my life ...

& I'm done ... LoL

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I'm the only and by default the biggest Prince fan in my family. My parents know little or almost nothing about him probably because they were never really exposed to him since they're both Asian. However, I was born, raised and live in Australia. I never really became aware of Prince until I saw him on the Grammys in 2005, but I think I'd vaguely heard stuff like 1999 and Kiss before, I just didn't know those were Prince's songs. I've never been to a Prince concert since I'm 19 and haven't really gotten a chance to go to one (I can't believe I just missed out on the Sydney concerts in 2003 during the One Nite Alone era, if only if I had become aware of Prince earlier).

My parents don't really know much about Prince, and probably don't know any of his songs (although they might recognise them but not know that it's him). I remember when I was listening to my 'My Name Is Prince', around two or three years ago, my mum said, "Is that Prince? Isn't he that gay guy?" But she doesn't really say it in a vindictive way. That pretty much sums up my parents' knowledge of Prince.

But I think my parents are becoming more aware of Prince and his music (they don't really have a choice since I play it on full blast all the time). However there have been some occasions when I'd be playing some ballad, e.g. 'The Beautiful Ones' or 'Insatiable' and my mum will be like, "Wow who's that? He has such a good voice!" That usually makes me smile.

As for the rest of my family (uncles, aunties, etc.) I prefer to not let them know that I'm a fan of Prince since they've always given me so much shit for listening to Michael Jackson, so I don't really want to tell them that I listen to Prince since I don't have time for their nonsense.

But one of my favourite things to do is to introduce Prince's music to other people. Sometimes I just tell people, "You should check out this song," and when they hear it I mostly receive positive feedback from them. Usually when I show my friends Prince's music their comments are mostly along the lines of, "That's a pretty catch chorus (in response to Raspberry Beret)," or "That's an awesome guitar solo (in response to Little Red Corvette)." Stuff like that always makes my day.

I am probably the biggest Prince fan in my family, but my oldest sister runs a close second. I have another sister who is also a fan, but nearly as much as the two of us. All three of us have traveled to 2 of his concerts together (New Orleans and Biloxi) from Fla. My older sister and I are flying to New York for the concert in Jan. The rest of my family members tolerate him because of us.

My kids (2 boys) are not fans. They are sick of him. Sick of listening to him. Sick of hearing about him. Oh well, their loss!!

My boyfriend was a casual fan before we met, but has become a big fan of his since hooking up with me. He prefers the classic stuff and is super bummed that he can't get off work to go to the concert with us.

Everyone I work with (which is about 300 people) know how big of a fan I am, and show some interest, even if they are just being polite. Prince is discussed in some way or another nearly everyday at my work. There are some real fans there. 4 of the physicians that I work for are pretty big fans, and have even asked for copies of some of my cd's. 2 of them had even considered going to one of the recent shows!! The other 4 physicians in my office are supportive and ask questions about his music.....one of them even contributed to my plane ticket to be able to make the concert!

So, overall, I am pretty lucky to have some people to discuss my obsession with! But would love to meet more fans to share our love of this man and his music!!
