Telecaster solo, Purple Rain, Syracuse version, 1985

Ok - Purple Rain on the table again. The Syracuse version 1985, I am still amazed.

At 3:19 he kicks in an extremely relaxed and just epic solo.

Being a Prince fan for over 20 years, I believe this is one of his finest moments. By his standard and in general, this is very good guitar playing. Other guitar solos at the PR tour pales, compared to this one. And do I need to say that the Hohner Telecaster sounds great in this performance.

Show this to the ones you love!

In my opinion you need to go for another magic night, to find Prince solos of this quality. Which of course happened in 1988.

He was on, that night. I prefer yhe cloud solos in that one. But, I like the Tele solo's vibe and nod to country.

It was really cool to bust out two guitars in his signature epic song. I need to watch this again.

i prefer the sound of the original... hohner telecaster way more than the cloud.

There's a very warm, organic sound to it. It sounded almost like he only had just a little chorus and some overdrive going on it.

But, the Cloud portion... wow. There's a run he does after walking around the stage and the risers that just absolutely floors me still.

it reminded me in a weird way of some of the led zeppelin songs (like Stairway to heaven) where Jimmy Page used the duel neck guitar. But he really owes it to the song to use the telly.

I have always thought this performance of Purple Rain is the best ever live performance due to the two contrasting guitar solos. The Hohner solo is simply perfect and the way the cloud sings at the end is one of a kind. Your right, the other performances recorded from this tour do not live up to this one.

I would say it is impressive - but his greatest solo is still to come music

Sorry, personally, I have never been a fan of the shortened down version of the song.

Nor am I a big fan of the Auerswald guitars.

But, this version is probably the best Nude tour version that is out there.

BTW

Purple Rain, Nude tour, Copenhagen version, also starts with a guitar "prelude".

Not the Telecaster kind of thing though. Auerswald, using more or less the same sound as in the main solo.

Actually the original 1983 premiere of Purple Rain at the little benefit concert has the prelude from what I remember. The video is circulating, and this is what the core tracks for the album version are edited from.
