Prince in the Grammy Hall of Fame

GRAMMY HALL OF FAME GETS BIGGER
Portnow Adds 30 More Classics to His Collection

December 7, 2010

The Recording Academy has added 30 new singles and albums to the Grammy Hall of Fame, bringing the total number of titles to 881.

The new additions include the Beatles' "Penny Lane," theJackson 5's "I'll Be There," Al Jolson's "My Mammy," theMarvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman," Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again," the original Broadway cast recording of, Brigadoon, Prince & the Revolution's Purple Rain, and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long." The list also includes songs or LPs from Joan Baez, Mildred Bailey, Ray Charles, Jimmy Cliff, Fats Domino, Duke Ellington, Al Green,Sergei Rachmaninoff and Hank Williams.

Records are reviewed every year by a committee of knowledgeable professionals, with final approval made by the Recording Academy Trustees.

Established by the Academy's National Trustees in 1973, the Grammy Hall of Fame was created to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. The list is displayed at The Grammy Museum, and it’s also posted (in alphabetical order by title) atwww.grammy.com/Recording_...l_Of_Fame/ .

Said Neil Portnow, awakening from his annual nine-month hibernation: "The Grammy Hall of Fame represents all genres of music, acknowledging the diversity of musical expression for which the Academy has become renowned. These musical treasures have brought us timeless recordings, and each of them deserves to be memorialized. These recordings are living evidence that music remains an indelible part of our culture. Now, won’t you all please get down on one knee and join me in a rousing rendition of ‘My Mammy’?"

look at the rest of the list...

Hint: it takes 25 years for the song to even become eligible.

Purple Rain is actually the most recently released inductee this year. Most of the recordings are much older.

Pretty cool... cool

Congrats 2 Prince. I think this is his 2nd album in the Grammy hall of fame. 1999 was inducted 2 years ago.

The question is how is he he not in the ASCAP songwriters hall of fame. I think I saw somewhere that Taylor Swift was in. If that is the truth it is a crime.

yes Swift won The Hal David Starlight Award, which is for current writers. Prince should win but hell Billy Joel was just inducted so it is justr a matter of time.

Usually they announce the inductees throughout the awards ceremony, unlike some awards that they hand out before it's televised.

I've been wondering the same thing too. Anything to do with good songwriters I think Prince should definitely be included in.

Thanks to the Grammys for ignoring Prince back when "Purple Rain" was actually out. Including the only platinum selling single the entire year("When Doves Cry") that garnered zero nominations.

I'm sure we'll be talking about Eminem's(10 nominations this year) greatness 25 years from now.
