from continuing only in the type of pop music molds of Elvis, Chuck Berry, dance themes, etc which were limited in concept and sound.

Buddy Holly was doiing a good job of that long before the Beatles came on the scene.

.....the forgotten mold breaker.

Dunno if I ever heard Buddy Holly pulling in an orchestra and then telling them to just play a chaotic scale up to create a sound like dying... and then splicing that into punctuations between completely different songs to create one haunting epic classic!

Beatles put out an album under a fictional band name as a concept and printed the lyrics to the songs on the album sleeves...

It's a huge creative leap.

supposed Beatles firsts:

The Beatles were the first band to take their concerts from theaters to stadiums.

The Beatles were the first group to use a full orchestra in popular music.(Buddy Holly had used a string section in the late 1950s when he recorded, “True Love Ways,”)

The Beatles were basically the first to use any sort of sampling in their songs.

The Beatles were the first to record with headphones as monitors and not just open sound everywhere. They were also the first band to use electric keyboards and synthesizers in their music, including a mellotron as featured in “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

The Beatles were the first band to use feedback in a recording.

The Beatles had stopped touring in 1966. To meet demands for concerts, they opted to send out videos, inventing the first music videos.

They were the first artists to use backwards recordings on a record.

They were the first band to have a record go over the standard 2 –3 minute mark

They were first to have million-selling 45s with TWO A-sided hits, as evidenced with “Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever.”

As I posted earlier, his 80s work and select others are on iTunes now . . .

BUT, after thinking about this: Prince could utilize iTunes a whole lot better. For example, he could post new song downloads on iTunes instead of random sites. He could form a Ping profile (music equivalent to Facebook) and get connected to fans. He could also release concert videos through iTunes.

Let's say all of this is true................none of it has anything 2 do with making "good" music or music I'd want 2 listen 2. I still don't get the Beatles HYPE.

Well all I can say is listen to the songs "Strawberry Fields Forever" "A Day in the Life" and "Come Together" "Eleanor Rigby" as examples of how they made music like no one else could or did... and if it you still don't like it, then it's just not your type of music! "Come Together" in particular uses the Prince formula of an old time blues progression with a futuristic stripped down minimal arrangement with everything pushed up front. Like "Kiss". Except it was done in 1969. It even has a hidden message that is "looped" on the beat and whispered (again like Prince would do). The whisper is Lennon saying "Shoot me".

it doesn't even matter who's better, The Beatles are more popular, and that pretty much answers the original question.

Agreed.

I agree as well.

Prince is a big name but not like the Beatles. He had his chance in the 80s to stay huge but I think he distanced himself from the mainstream with UTCM, ATWIAD and the Lovesexy cover.

I admire him for that, I dont really care about his popularity, I care about his music.

But yes, NDRU answered the original question perfectly.

not to mention putting his more recent work that he owns outright and has had limited print runs and/or is out of print on there. he could probably make more money on that, despite limited mass appeal and demand than what he's getting paid for what's already on there.
