Jehova witness thing over???

Hi all,

Yesterday I was in Antwerp witnessing a ROCKING show (meaning he played an awfull lot of guitar). That's not the reason for this thread actually.... During this show I somehow got the impression that his Jehova Witnesses days might be over. I am not saying they ARE, it's just an impression I got.

Why?

One of the songs performed was ''The Love We Make''; stunning and rough but that's not the point. At some point he actually said that we shouldn't be looking for answers above, pointing to heaven but instead looking at ourselves, inside each and every one of us, reverting to his old dogmatic self-regulatory stance.. quote : "stop looking above, look here inside, inside every one of you". Makes one wonder what he meant by that....

Then there's more (admittedly small!) clues:

- before the show, UNCENSORED (!) versions of Erotic City and Rebirth of the Flesh (title alone could be a statement) were played.

- Cream is back in the setlist.

- Ida Nielsen's and Cassandra's clothing was , let's just say, not what one would wear to a Jehova's witness gathering smile as opposed to the clothing worn during Musicology and later on...

-dancing during Kiss is not just slightly suggestive anymore....

Oh well, it couldt just be wishfull thinking and hoping to see things but anyway, might be interesting to hear what some of you make of this? After all, jehova's witnesses are quite strict in their teachings and somehow this all just doesn't seem to fit.....

he played cream just two years ago. Cream is not a dirty song either, it means "rising to the top" or rising to the top of the charts. Or atleast thats how i interpret it.

Interesting. I know it can be interpreted in many ways... but let's face it... it's about a blowjob.

Lol--you may well have a point. Like Guinness (3 minutes--good things come to those who wait!). Although Prince often said not the body, the mind--SexyMF and Come come to mind (ahem).

Anywho, if he ever was JW in the first place, he was JW like nobody else, like it's not been understood before. JW's seem to forget (and I reckon they are originally JW's from the Isaiah quote--Ye Shall Be My Witnesses) that only 2 or 3 witnesses were required. Self-appointed witnesses? Blimey--if you were interviewing someone for a job and they told you that they decided to take the job before you offered it to them, what would you think?

I gather this through his lyrics, not through rumours or what he may or may not have said in interview. And yes, I include TRC in this.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. Prince being a Jehovah's Witness didn't "change" him nearly as much as some people would have you believe.

His lyrics are still sexual (some of the most being on The Rainbow Children album). He still rocked the makeup, and the heels. He still performed songs about doing it. Hell, in 1999/2000 he was a Jehovah's witness and he was still peforming "Darling Nikki" full blown stage humping and all.

Bottom line: I never believed the hype. Prince has been preaching in concert since at least 1981 (Second Coming anyone?) in 1998-ish Prince stopped cussing and changed the lyrics to some songs. He never stopped being sexual, he never stopped being Prince.

i dont buy it. 2008 prince would never play cream if it was about oral sex. My guess is that after the relatively unsuccessful grafitti bridge, prince wanted to get back on top of the charts- and thats what cream did for him.

exactly, i doubt he will change. It doesnt matter that much though. He doesnt have to sing about head to be a great singer. Of course i'd like him to do songs like gett off again but that unlikely.

I have to say that was a striking moment for me too. Inspirational! But after all, all he's saying is: "every bad thing on earth, is our fault, and it's not up to God to make it right. It's up to us." I can see a religious man saying that.

Really? This is after he stopped swearing and changed "The Cross" to "The Christ" etc. When, in your opinion, was Prince "fully into the JW mindset"?

He started wearing suits? He has worn suits at various points in his career....does than necessarily mean "conservative" to you? To me, his fashion choices ebb and flow. I mean, here is Prince as of late & it seems like he is dressed like Prince circa 1988:

if he has cast his jehovah's witness beliefs aside, in favor of sexualizing his concerts, then so be it.

its good to see him expressing himself more naturally, even if he is dipping into the past to do so.

i'm not sure how a man who lives by his own rules could have ever followed anyone else's for very long, especially God's.

this too shall pass

Point is, he wasn't following God's (because they're unknowable). He was following the rules of a religion. shrug

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

he may still be. according to his recent interview, if it is true, he's still promoting the Bible, and therefore the laws within it.

i guess i'm not sure which of those he follows, and which ones he casts aside in favor of his own views.
