the act of marriage via legal contract doesnt necessarily mean the two people are one in spirit and therefore joined together by god.

I totally agree with that.... (though I do believe a man and woman should get married legally too, just for the legal reasons...) I like how in some countries, couples do the legal ceremony and the church ceremony..

OP, that was alot to read! But since we don't know the details of their divorce, then we can't really come to the conclusion that they are still married...There are reasons GOD allows divorce, even though he hates it, but we would first be assuming that their marriage was by the power of GOD in the spiritual sense...again, we can't make that assumption. Just because 2 people are legally married, doesn't mean they were truly married under/through GOD...we just don't know..
