During the European leg of the Lovesexy tour, Albert Magnoli was invited along to shoot footage for a proposed documentary, does anyone know what happened to this?

A 9 min segment of the docu was broadcast on 27th Sept 1989 on US tv, entitled Prince: Musical Portrait. Is this all that has ever surfaced of this project? In the UK, the BBC broadcast an hour long documentary entitled Prince Rogers Nelson, that was in Dec 1991. This documentary featured footage of Lovesexy rehearsals and interviews with the band members, does anyone know if this was the footage that was filmed by Magnoli?

[Edited 8/20/10 18:06pm]

It is some of the Magnolo footage!

Thanks. I guess that the full documentary (if it was ever completed) will be yet another Prince project that will never see the light of day.

That is the one yes, it was part of the BBC's "omnibus" arts series. I was not aware that that was the title, i remember the docu well as i recorded it from tv (unfortunatley i no longer have it).

Per Nilsens "The Vault" has the title being Prince Rogers Nelson, but "Prince Of Paisley Park" seems to ring a bell with me.

there are at least two versions of this documentary ( the one that aired), it might be that there was a British and and American cut.

They got that footage (and other rare footage) because Prince had been a dick: he'd promised them an interview, and of course he backed out when the film crew arrived in MN. But there were signed contracts etc, so instead he offered them access to vault movies. They also showed early live footage, for instance.

I was just thinking that, a lot more interesting than an interview.

The Lovesexy tour produced some fantastic bootlegs, some of which are crystal clear soundboard recordings.

Two of my favourites are Osaka '89, which features not only the full show, but also an 80 minute soundcheck in pristine quality.

The other is my all time fav Lovesexy boot, Nagoya '89, again a crystal clear soundboard, fantastic.

Sendai '89 is also really superb.

LoveSexy was the best tour and album package he's ever put out, hands down. The best band, the best setlist, the best arrangements, the best art design.

I like the Lovesexy album, but the live material is where it's at for me. Though i did not attend any Lovesexy shows, the material i have gathered is top notch. I was not a big fan of the band playing short versions of songs, and in some instances parts of the Lovesexy show seemed to resemble a megamix of sorts, but my god they were tight. The Lovesexy band produced a lot of funk in those shows, great stuff.

Mmhm. I'm not typically a fan of short versions of songs either, but the LoveSexy band flows seamlessly and you don't feel like its rushed. That was a problem I had with the Revolution (especially from the PR tour). They would learn short versions of songs similar to the LS tour, but they were so awkward and robotic and mechanical that you knew they were just focusing on being artistically obedient to Prince or something. The LS band could go on and on for days, they were real improvisational musicians.

Indeed, they sounded more relaxed than other bands, like they were having fun.

In both instances it wasn't the band as much as it was Prince

with Purple Rain he wanted it that way, even Dez after seeing the show remembered some things Prince said about the next era/tour being more mechanical or something like that.

But the 1st Avenue shows were much more loose and free flowing, over course the 1st Ave performance that a lot of the PR album material came from had to be a bit tighter but anyone who heard/saw those renditions especially of PR understand why that era was so great. I wish when he released the Purple Rain/God single he included the full rendition of PR with Prince's & Wendy's longer intro

Same band on the Parade tour has a more loose improvised show, and then we get the improvisional the Flesh pieces also this is when the aftershows started not to a big degree but yet still.

Two of my favourites are Osaka '89, which features not only the full show, but also an 80 minute soundcheck in pristine quality.

The other is my all time fav Lovesexy boot, Nagoya '89, again a crystal clear soundboard, fantastic.
