About 30 minutes in, Prince launches into a blazin' guitar solo on CAPS LOCK -- Switch That Motherfucker Off.
Definite highlight of the tour for me. The Coco For Cobo boot version beats the Small Club boot version by a mile, so don't even go there.
Shame he never recorded a studio version.
CAPS LOCK -- STMFO is my jam!
I think Judy Garland recorded a version of CAPS LOCK -- Swith That Motherfucker Off, back in her MGM days? We played it at my grandma's funeral. It was her favorite song.
I hate fatboy slim's remix of that one. |

as far as i know, it is a cue to the band to end the song. similar to "confusion" at the end of "it's gonna be a beautiful night"
in one concert he calls out "las vegas in e" [Edited 8/9/10 13:14pm] "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

It's kind a joke cue to go all "Vegas" in style... like Elvis is about to come out... rolling on the cymbals... drums... reaching a cresecendo. |

yeah like 'confusion' was musically a mess. it is a bit like the open notes in rock band... just go nuts and see what happens. but it is not a mistake. (maybe they think it had something to do with the LV stint) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

I'll tell you what - if a man can play 1,000's of shows and mess up only about a dozen times, he deserves a medal.
And near as I can tell, Prince doesn't use a teleprompter monitor with the lyrics/chords displayed down on the floor or by a speaker. Lots of artists do. |

Actually the vegas show i referenced here earlier he did have a lyric sheet. Doesn't mean anything as like you said other artists do that as well. When you've written that much material your going to forget a lyric you can always cover up with a primal scream. [Edited 8/9/10 14:29pm] |

I can't remember which performance it was, but it was during the Musicology tour. Prince and the band were performing on TV and I swear I saw Prince flash two fingers behind his back at John Blackwell, meaning Blackwell had missed a drum fill and was being fined $2K.
I only noticed Prince's move because there was a story from Blackwell on that exact same kind of thing a year or so ago. But I watched the performance about four times and I could not see or hear what mistake John made. Maybe I was just seeing things! |

I wouldn't be entirely surprised, and Prince's band surely makes fewer mistakes than mine, but this thread shows that Prince himself makes plenty, it's all part of real musicians performing real music...

On Arsenio the first time, Prince nearly lost his hand when he opend his piano to let balloons out, and the piano slammed back shut. Prince momentarily acted like he would try to keep it up, but thought it wiser to let the moment go
He also couldn't get the bad reviews to light on the act I & II tour during my name is prince, but instead pretented to piss on them
He messed up the words to Call My Name when I saw him, saying "everything...nothing about you is false" maybe that was a freudian slip |

there was also the story Matt Fink or Eric Leeds told a story about how one day during the Lovesexy tour Matt wore a LA Dodgers shirt (IIRC after losing a bet with Allan as to who would win the series LA or Oakland).
He came on stage after a break in the shirt and the crowd (I think they were playing LA at the time) reacted and prince looked over and yelled "FINED!" But I think Matt said he never got fined. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

I've seen a few videos of concerts where he forgets lyrics (I.e. Musicology concert at staples center..during dmsr he says dance when everyone else says ooh) but he always recovers quickly or keeps going. He makes mistakes seem flawless. What is your main problem?

On the Atlanta 85 Purple Rain video, he goes tearing across the stage during "Baby Im A Star" and trips over his microphone stand/cord (for some strange reason his mic had a cord, but only during Baby Im A Star).
He didnt do a full on faceplant, but it was obvious to anyone watching that he tripped. |

AGREE !!!
This is the funniest thread in a long time and deserves more attention !!!!
The Judy Garland/MGM/Grandmas funeral comment got me crying- Hilarious.
The thing is I can't recall "CAPS LOCK - STMFO" on any Prince album and it isn't in the survey list.
But I do recall the chant
"Free, the slave, switch that MF off"
Cheers,

At the 1991 Video Music Awards when Prince and the NPG played "Gett Off", Prince gets the cuffs of is yellow shirt caught on the microphone and says the opening lyrics off rhythm before finally getting back on track. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR |

He seems he has a thing for making mistakes on Leno:
1998 "Come On" - forgot part of the rap in the outro
2004 "Musicology" - forgot he had a pick in his guitar strings - the broadcast has overdubbed guitar
2009 "Ol' Skool Company" - forgot part the rap bit in the middle
2009 "Dreamer" - plays A G E, instead of G A E in one of the opening riffs
2009 "Feel Better" - again, stuffs some of the lyrics, was seemlessly edited out of the broadcast

But Prince is experienced enough to know how to make it not so obvious if he does make a mistake...

I'm gonna have to go back and check that out.
When you check it out, watch Prince wave his hat right behind the sax players ass during his sax solo. Looks like his blowing off his fart. Funny stuff |

He screws up the verse lyrics on "I Would Die 4 U" during his first performance of it at the First Ave show in 83. You could say the lyrics werent set in stone yet but it is obvious he confused the order of the verses. |

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN A BIG MISTAKE PRINCE HAS MADE WHILE PERFORMING LIVE ONSTAGE. I JUST WATCHED HIS 1985 GRAMMY PERFORMANCE AND HE REALLY LOOKED TENSE AND NERVOUS. HE WAS PERFORMING BABY I'M A STAR AND DROPPED THE MICROPHONE. I EVEN BELIEVE THAT HE HIT HIMSELF IN THE LIP WITH THE MIKE ONCE HE PICKED IT UP.
MISTAKES?!?!?!?

Not really a Prince mistake, but the best of all has to be from the Small Club "Still Would Stand All Time."
