Exactly.
People know damn well that a majority of people going to see him or any other classic artist are there to hear the hits.
That's why there's always been this joke that The Rolling Stones playing their new material is a cue to go to the bathroom.
Springsteen fans don't give him shit for playing Thunder Road for the billionth time.
U2 fans could care less that they've heard I Still Haven't Found 10,000 times.
I sincerely doubt Prince playing his classic material is gonna stop anyone from enjoying themselves at his concerts. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

That would be roughly 44% new and 66% old songs or hits as they call them.

The Madonna debate is kind of weird...but I think it's a great set list. A very nice mixture of hits and new songs. The new album she was promoting had 12 songs on it, and she performed 8 of them. And she mixed up the old songs. No "Like a Virgin" or "Borderline" on there or "Papa Don't Preach," etc.

Showing a least a bit of imagination and interest in her new material ( girl).

Yeah Prince's hit setlist bores me, but nobody forces me to go see him in concert, right?!
And uh ..... really Bart, you act like Prince is the love of your life who cheated on you. The fact that you're still here just shows how deep in your system he still is. What else could be the reason why you made it your gospel to try to show the org that Prince is not as sweet as he seems? If the love is over ..... move on dude!

I think the Madonna debate is fitting. You could also inlclude Michael Jackson. Three artists huge in the 80s, still making an impact today. I don't know enough of Michael Jackson's tours, but Madonna's tours always promote her latest release. I agree with Bart, he just got the % of the shows being all new material incorrect.
Sticky and Sweet Tour - 9 of 12 songs off Hard Candy Confessions Tour - 10 of 12 songs off Confessions On A Dance Floor Reinvention Tour - 7 of 11 off American Life Drowned World Tour - 8 of 10 off Music and 7 of 13 off Ray of Light
I personally woudn't consider what Prince is doing now, a few shows here and there, a full on tour.
Love 4 One Another/Jam of the Years Tours - generally 5 of 36 (Jam of the Year, Get You Groove On, Face Down, Mr Happy, Sleep Around) (Mr Happy and Sleep Around were normally dropped during the 2nd leg, as was Get You Groove On in the 2nd half of the 2nd leg)
New Power Soul Tour - 5 of 9 off New Power Soul (Mad Sex, Push It Up, Freaks On This Side, Come On, The One) (That is being very generous, as most of those songs were not played every night)
Hit and Run Tour - 0 of 15 off Rave
One Night Alone Tour - 5 of 14 off The Rainbow Children for the North American leg (The Rainbow Children, Muse 2 the Pharaoh, Mellow, 1+1=3, Family Name) (The Everlasting Now was added towards the end)
One Night Alone Tour - 7 of 14 off The Rainbow Children for the European/Japan leg (The Rainbow Children, Muse 2 the Pharaoh, Mellow, 1+1=3, Family Name, The Everlasting Now, The Work, pt 1) (Muse 2 the Pharaoh was often dropped)
Musicology Tour - 5 of 12 off Musicology (Musicology, Life O' the Party, On the Couch, Call My Name, Dear Mr Man) (Again being very generous as On the Couch, Call My Name, and Dear Mr Man were not always played)
The residincies in Las Vegas and London were not tours, even though minimal songs were played off 3121 and Planet Earth. Bottom line is Madonna has a lot more die hard fans than Prince and she can play whatever the hell she wants at her shows and still charge $300.00+. TRUE BLUE

Madonna's setlist are usually around 50% new album and 50% hits, the Drowned World Tour was the ONLY time it was 80% new music and only a few hits, but then she balanced that out with the Re-Invention Tour where the new music was buried in a sea of hits (also, out of the 7 American Life songs, 1 was a dub interlude and another was just one verse in another song).
And while she has more hits than Prince, it's not like she doesn't repeat the same songs. Fans were already complaining that she sang "La Isla Bonita" & "Ray Of Light" 3 out of 4 tours in the past decade, she almost always sings "Holiday" & "Music". But there are hits she never plays, like "Take A Bow" or almost every 90s ballad except the Evita stuff, or a worldwide #1 single like "Who's That Girl". It also took her TWENTY-THREE years to play "Borderline" again, which is her first top 10 hit.
It's also important to note that Madonna practically never plays "rarities" and "album tracks", other than "Paradise" on the Confessions Tour, while Prince pulls out non-singles like "Sometimes It Snows In April" or "The Cross" very often. We wish Madonna started doing songs like "Sanctuary" or "Swim" on her shows...
To the person who said Madonna's old music is embarrassing for both her and the fans, then explain why does she always sing a song from her debut or the sophomore album whenever it's "for the fans" or when she had that request section? A lot of people were wishing for "Dress You Up", so she did it in 2009, it also became a centerpiece of the Celebration GH, yet she didn't even write it...
Even Madonna's flops like Erotica got a lot more attention than anything except Musicology by Prince in the last 15 years, so she can afford to do a lot more new music. She sold 3.5 million CDs of Hard Candy and 3.5 million tickets of Sticky & Sweet so the audience wasn't that offended to hear "She's Not Me" or "Miles Away".

All her releases/tours get more attention because she is part of the record industry system that P turned away from when he broke away from WB. I wonder who made more $ over that time period. Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

I don't think it's that big of a deal either. My preference is less cover songs and maybe 50/50 hits and fan known songs. According to the venue I can usually guess which type of show to expect and choose whether to go or not. The only song I am truly fed up with is Kiss.
As for Madonna, I ain't going to see her no matter what she plays. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Actually she did perform Borderline 7th song on the dvd release
And she sang Like A Virgin with the crowd when she asked what song they what her to sing
Papa Don't Preach was never a regular concert number
But when she had her 1st tour since the Girl Show, the Drowned World Tour 2001 the lack of popular songs was a critic/complaint this tour featured songs from 2 new albums Ray of Light & Music 2 of the 'older songs' performed were from an album not toured with-Bed Times Stories
Drowned World Substitute For Love Impressive Instant Candy Perfume Girl Beautiful Stranger Ray of Light Paradise Not For Me Frozen Open Your Heart interlude Nobody's Perfect Mer Girl Sky Fits Heaven Mer Girl I Deserve It Don't Tell Me Human Nature Secret Gone Don't Cry For Me Argentina(instrumental) Lo Que Siente La Mujer What It Feels Like For a Girl La Isla Bonita Holiday Music
Prince's Parade Tour didn't feature any music from Purple Rain but the song Purple Rain sometimes and I think Dance Electric was done a time or 2. But did ATWIAD & Raspberry Beret Pop Life and sometimes the Ladder from ATWIAD
the Sign o the Times tour only featured Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain nothing from ATWIAD, and only Kiss from Parade, 1999 Little Red Corvette from 1999

On the Parade tour When Doves Cry was a regular in the set list from New York until the end of the tour. Paisley Park, Condition of the Heart, and America were also played sometimes.
On the Sign of the Times tour When Doves Cry was again in the regular set list. Girls and Boys from Parade was also in the regular set list. [Edited 7/23/10 20:26pm] TRUE BLUE

I see about half a dozen of her '80s songs, the rest are more recent. Go on, calculate the average age of the songs played, I bet it isn't 25 years. Seems to me she's got a healthy balance of 80s/90s/00s songs. Now compare to "forward looking" Prince. © Bart Van Hemelen

Right, I probably remember America the most, but yeah Condition of the Heart piano set was a regular on the Lovesexy tour too
Right SOTT When Doves Cry was also on the Lovesexy tour. But again the Lovesexy tour featured a lot of songs from various albums. Girls & Boys almost seems as regular as Purple Rain

Erotic was a flop? I wouldn't say it was a flop, that whole period actually made her even more relevant I think. But I agree in comparison to some of her others it could be considered a flop
2 Me that whole period was wild and in your face the Sex book the album and the Girlie Show, which is still my top 2 favorites
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ica_(album)
Erotica is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on October 20, 1992 by Maverick Records. The album was released simultaneously with Madonna's first book publication, Sex. The RIAA certified it double platinum on January 6, 1993, recognizing two million shipments throughout the U.S. Worldwide sales are currently recorded at over 5 million. The album has been certified Double Platinum in the UK with sales exceeding 600,000. Erotica's fifth single, "Rain," got recognition at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1993, and the album spawned her critically successful Girlie Show World Tour. Erotica was Madonna's first album to have the Parental Advisory sticker.

Erotica wasn't a flop. It sold quite well, just not as much as her past releases. So they called it a flop.
Just a tidbit: I was at Glam Slam Minneapolis one night around the time of this release and Prince and Carmen Electra danced together to the remix of Erotica. TRUE BLUE
