You "finally" have the magazine. You've read the article and looked at the pictures.

So discuss the article, the pictures, and the man.

For those who have a copy of this article, and of course without violating copyright laws, can you re interrupt what is in the article? My understanding of copyright law is as long as it is not written identically. Just put in your own words what elements are in there. And quoting someone is not copyrighted either. Certainly Bart or whomever can let us know if it is. I can't find this magazine in the area I live

Without being too cryptic:

-If you were wondering if he still plays the drums, wonder no more.

-If you thought Ike Turner was P's first influence, you might be on to something.

-If you are looking to add another word to your Princetionary (like 'boox'), you're good.

Just a quick synopsis:(EDITED)

Well, he pretty much spoke about his faith. He gave his opinion on the music industry and black artists. Some may not like what he stated though, but it is his opinon.

He stated Ike Turner was one of his first influences.

When the interviewer asks him about why he chose to stay in Minneapolis, he comments how Minneapolis is healthy, and a quiet lifestyle.

He does mention being around "Yes" people is a "nonproductive environment" and held more value in people who prefer to tell him the truth.

The Ebony interviewers/guests at Paisley, said Tavis Smiley was the one responsible for getting them an interview/photoshoot with Prince. Tavis was present at Paisley Park when the Ebony guests were there. As well as Larry Graham and his wife Tina, Bria, Shelby, Liz, Elisa and Prince.

They ate dinner, then later Prince and Bria, Shelby, Elisa, Liz performed for the Ebony staff. Then Prince invited Larry to perform as well.

Prince gave his views on the music industry heads and their longtime ownership of black music which he feels should be done away with. From what I got from his statement, it is apparent he sees the music industry today as a monopoly; he feels with the landscape of this country changing, that the industry needs to get back to localized music distribution.

He expresses that because the world is moving towards globalization, that art should be out of the hands of the gatekeepers whose views of black culture is "monochromatic, because he feels "we" (referencing black culture) come in all colors and that it should be seen that way globally. He goes on to mention that "we" (blacks) were and still are a "very beautiful people" and also "industrious". I think that should answer anyone's questions regarding Prince's race, just by reading that part of the interview as he refers to blacks or black culture, using the term "we" during the Q&A.

He questions the interviewer if they ever heard of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Wall Street, and states that it is more about equality and freedom than skin color, and that "Diversity in Ownership" should be basically be demanded from America's current administration.

I believe his mentioning "Harlem Renaissance and "Black wall Street" was to give the interviewer an idea of the time when many Blacks had their own wealth and how independent they were as well as, having ownership and control of their own businesses.

Yes Black Wall Street refers to a town in Greenwood, Tulsa Oklahoma, where many Blacks were entrepreneurs, professionals, and were very independent. Owned their own property/businesses;homes. etc., and it continued like that for several years, until, unfortunately, given the time of segregation and Jim Crow, some years later, some jealous, poor whites did not take too kindly that many Blacks were living better than them. Many Blacks were chased out of their homes, robbed of their personal belongings, some homes were bombed and burned;some blacks were lynched, and basically a race riot took place. It was a sad situationl.

That probably was the wealthiest and most prosperous times of wealth for Blacks in America, and quite frankly, it hasn't been the same since. At least not at that level it was back then. There was also Rosewood, Florida, where many Blacks back in the early 1920s, owned their own property, had businesses, basically had their own wealth, and basically the same incident that happened in Greenwood, happened to the black residents of Rosewood, Florida. It's all documented history. I guess what Prince is saying, is that Blacks need to get back to having that kind of independence and building their own wealth again.

I like that he sent for & relocated his good friends Larry & Tina Graham to Minneapolis. To be close to him. I wish i had a friend that would do that for me. I like how Prince is very loyal to his inner circle. I love the closeness he shares with Larry. They seem to have a real tight bond to eachother.

I got a copy yesterday, and posted this on the other thread last night:

Here are some cool parts:

1) That red chair picture. Dang. It looks incredible in the actual magazine, and it's large (takes up a whole page) just like I hoped.

2) Him using "Finding Nemo" as a video "aquarium" on a gigantic screen in his auditorium. That's adorable. I've used cute 3D fish as an "aquarium" screensaver on my nicely-sized TV too, but never an actual cartoon fish movie. lol I really like that.

3) When he quoted Little Richard and said LR's trademark phrase: "Y'all ain't never gave me nothin!" I would love to see Prince say that. I visualized him sounding and moving his face/body just like Richard too, LOL.

There were a couple of other comments he said that I thought were interesting as well, regarding the Bible. Also, I laughed at how he evaded answering the question about Bria, lol.

I wish he would do Sister2Sister Magazine. I think that lady does

decent interviews and is very down to earth. Prince didn't seem too

comfortable in this article. It seems like the interviewer

was looking through a display at a museum.

It is refreshing now to see that he is more open

to express his faith and not care what the next man thinks about it either.

I remember when P wouldn't even let 'them' even touch that subject.

Now he's asking them questions...lol...that's cute.

I think now Prince is really starting to feel comfortable in his skin.

Keep doing 'You' Prince and keep surrounding yourself with friends

that will build you up spiritually.

lol I thought that statement was bogus too, lol.

Prince did not reveal anymore than most fans already know. For me, the last Q&A was quite interesting in how he answered. The interviewer questions Prince about his personal life, marriage, family, love. After this question the interviewer says to Prince...You introduced Bria Valente as your

girlfriend----if he was looking for longterm commitment? Self-interest is on the back burner 4 now. Imho, Prince returns to his answer to the question in his last remark-----No longer should we build houses and not occupy them. What makes the Q&A interesting for me is that one has to be "deep" into Jehovah/Truth/God's Word and His plan to really understand why Prince answered the question this way and still holding dear to his personal life. Some folks won't get it or agree it me which is "cool" (just my thoughts). Some will say he dodged the question, but when you are deep into the Word/Truth as we know Prince is, he's simply following Jehovah's lead this time; God's way is best. Prince is a much "wiser" man today. We know Prince has always been concerned about the world and it's problems and had a "love life" at the same time. Prince has always said his music speaks for him. Lastly, he is definitely not denying there is a "love relationship"....we will get only what he wants to give us is my point/answer to how I viewed this last Q&A.

I was thinking that his answers were going over folks head- and that perhaps he was speaking from a spiritual standpoint. I think I will go look for the article to confirm this.

So how did some of you who read the article feel about him stating in so many words about the long-term "white monopoly ownership of black music" needing to be abolished? Also, stating that "localized music distribution" needs to come back.

Do you agree with him and why? Express yourselves.

Don't be shy with your responses. lol

Everything Prince has said about the music industry has happened. He was the first to say artist need to break away from long term contracts or stop signing them . Because its slavery. They should go independent and sell there music on the internet. He has and he is more successful (some may argue that but its true) and makes way more money than he did @ Warners....Now look at the Music Industry. No one is selling anymore. Music labels are folding.

I bought my copy yesterday, read it and absorbed. Classic Prince. Classic Princeology. Still living in the other dimension. Still Princely. Great Pics. Highest Recommendation for fans to pick up a fresh copy. The first and only time I've ever bought Ebony. Walked in asked for Ebony and the guy said "the one with Prince on the cover." Cool.

Definitely a Princely keepsake. Coolest Prince magazine piece in a long time.

I see your point. With the services now on the internet available for consumers to purchase music without having to leave their homes to go to record stores, and independent/unsigned artists promoting themselves by myspace, facebook, youtube, and hooking with companies like cdbaby;itunes, etc., many unsigned/independent artists can nowself-promote their music, but it takes hard work and dedication to get themselves recognized. The only thing that threatens musicians/artists, as far as attempting to sell their music on the internet, is people dowinloading their music for free, by shaing files with others. That's the downside, because it takes a chunk out of an artist's pocket, and often times, selling their music is part of a musician's/artist livelihood.

There has been a handful of artists that have been discovered by a large following through myspace, facebook, youtube, other internet sources, as well as word-of-mouth/spreading the word.. Often times, musicians/artists can't depend on record execs to discover them to promote their music, so they choose to self-promote. Not to mention, often times, artists get cheated by record companies.

Yes, it's mentioned in this thread. It was funny when he did an imitation of Little Richard. Kind of reminds you of when he did the Ozzy Osbourne imitation on the "Live at the Aladdin" DVD. lol

So what is your suggestion or a better way for artists to promote themselves, if they can't get a deal with a record company? With the internet today being one of the main sources for many independent/unsigned artists to sell their music and promote themselves, do you have a better idea? Feel free to share.

Many artists in the past complained about being pigeon-holed by record execs and not able to express or display their creative music skills the way they want to.With many independent unsigned aritsts, they're able to express that more freely. Although, it does help to have someone with some backing get your name and music out there, not all artists are lucky enough to get signed to a label that will give them full creative rights, without some execs interjecting and telling what songs they feel an artist should released first or how to express their music to the general public.

Continue to use the Internet, Tour and make good music. Out of those three Prince has figured out one, the other two he has struggled with and keeps getting L's.

It is a business, which requires ownership.

When was the last time Prince toured for free, or held free concert series?

I haven't got the magazine but it's sounds like it's a good read and that so great the Prince is so deep into his culture . You know you read alot of things about people and some of the things are negative but to read Prince love being who he is it's refreshing. Bria singing with Shelby and Liz is a beautiful thing.
