Those laws are vague and open for interpretation. And have been changed repeatedly.
Prince could have "fixed" this back in 1992 when he was renegociating his contract. But instead of looking at the bigger picture, he was blinded by the bling and was far more interested in having this ridiculous "bigegst recording contract ever" title than in looking at what this actually involved. That's the same mentality that has been ruining his career for years: shortsightedness. © Bart Van Hemelen

Probably. As Bart said, the laws are vague and open to interpretation. Especially when they were first passed, right around the time that he signed his first contract and was putting out "For You." He's probably fine for the later stuff, but anything under that first contract (which I think covered up through Purple Rain?) might be open to a legal battle. Unless later contracts clarified those specific terms. Of course, considering how that last contract went down, and all the pissing and moaning about not owning his masters, I can't imagine he had the foresight to negotiate on that level of minutiae. | |

Yeah, I couldn't care less about an entertainer's tax situation or who they owe money to, that is NOT news, it's personal accounting business. I care about the MUSIC and performances, not the checking account balance.

----- shortsightedness on P part or on his original managment team who should have fixed the problem around the Purple Rain era when he had much pull at WB. | |

"t's personal accounting business."
it is personal but plenty of noisey asses on this board love to go on about how P is on the brink of financial ruin. (LOL) | |

Extra! Extra! Prince To Release New CD Via Newspaper; WB UpdatePrince’s new CD 20Ten (some title) will be released first through a Belgium newspaper on July 10. An interview took place with the newspaper which teases the release. Other newspaper deals may follow as deals were trying to be reached. Warner Bros. was mentioned as releasing the CD to other countries not participating in the newspaper giveaway. More than likely that means the U.S. as when he did the giveaway before, the U.S. was not part of it. As we previously reported, Prince met with Warner Bros. Records on Tuesday, and the distribution deal appears to already be in place. We have learned what was discussed was the deal, but also something else. So, this distribution deal could actually lead to something else. Hmm. I still want a live DVD. Tuesday night, Prince attended a show by Cassandra Wilson in Hollywood. As we mentioned before, he is in town for the BET Awards this Sunday where he is recieveng the Lifetime Achievement Award, but is not performing.

Well WB is not the same company when P was around. Warner Brother sold the music division to a private equity group and it looks like WB will be doing the distrubution. Big difference between being signed to WB and having them distrubute the CD. After all the crap about the WB stuff you would think some of you know it alls would be a little more informed. | |

WB like all record companies need to sell records .... They would be stupid to turn down a deal with Prince ..one of the biggest names in popular music...

I wonder if this will be a new album or WB stuff? | |

Well I actually appreciate a 360 degree glimpse of the artist that I'm a fan of and this includes everything about them. This includes who they are dating, any major money issues, and anything else that I would find interesting that would humanize the artist more. Obviously this is not always possible, and generally there is often more rumor and speculation than fact. But in an ideal situation for me, it think it's ok for the artist to become "human". Hell we don't have to know everytime he's been treated for "the Clap" but tax issues are truly no big deal. Many many people get into pickles with the IRS particularly when you have more assets to account for.
This does not mean that I feel like it's ok for the media to go into "Circus Mode" like they did with Michael Jackson and start labeling the artist names like "Wacko Jacko" or anything like that. But it's good to read a legitimate article about other areas of the artists life besides the music. Both the good and the bad. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that? | |

I understand your mistake. It can be confusing. But when Prince mentioned the artist that sold his masters for over 90 million, It was David Bowie. But he was using him as an example. For wanting to have that option to do what David Bowie was able to do. Because David owned his masters so he was able to profit from that. It still doesn't mean Prince will sell them once he gets ownership. But he will have that option. I am so smart...lol [Edited 6/24/10 14:16pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. | |

Hopefully the meeting was about remastering his catalog; he and the material deserve it. The only other thing Warner could do for him is distribute. He could also be collecting recovered revenues from Purple Rain. Alot of people think Prince is outta touch in terms of business and music; he's really way ahead of the curve in a major way. He has successfully proven that you do not need a major label to do a commercially viable project. Independence is where the record industry is right now and Prince was talking about it 17 years ago. Y'all haters better recognize. | |

This is a great deal for Prince.
Planet Earth was a throw away album. Songs we're put together from all different years into one very weak album, cost would of been nothing, so making it big with the papers was a great financial success for P.
Expect another mish mash album with 20TEN(Not sayying its gonna be bad, but I expect it to be tracks just thrown together), creating no real flow.
Just my two cents!! Keenmeister | |

in terms of Business, WB like i said could benefit and will if this is a "remaster" campaign, and i think Prince would be wise to swallow his pride on this one and take what he can get. WB and Rhino do a great job with reissues, as seen with The Cure and a-ha coming in July, and if they can do that for them and they both benefited from it (a-ha netted 7figures +) just for talking up the reissues and giving over demos and mixes that they had control of. So Prince needs to drop the whole "rebel" shit, we know you dont like the business, none of us do, but there is no more "industry" like it was, go in get your cut, swallow your pride, give up this masters plight, you wont win by talking about it 24/7, you gotta play their game. And Prince would be wise to do this NOW "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F | |

Exactly. And I very much intend to cop that "Disintegration Deluxe" set, and I'm a FAR bigger Prince fan than I am of The Cure (altho I do like them a lot).
There's just so much potential for Prince to make a lot of money and get a lot of publicity from doing very little work.
I mean, Lovesexy is begging for a deluxe edition with the DVD included. Purple Rain too. |
