And I agree completely. He couldn't have got to where he is now (spiritually, personality-wise) without his history.

Cerebus/ Cravens - of course you nake sound arguments WHY Prince would do well to acknowledge his past works and do them justice by remastering them. As a fan for many years myself I would love nothing better than to be able to replace my whole album collection with better quality ones. I just can' t see it happening so I don't give it too much thought.
When i mention 'logic' I mean from the fact that
1)Prince stated circa 1999(?) that he had been working on rerecording his past albums (1999 - The New Master anyone 2) JW leanings may well mean that Prince cannot be seen to be condoning any of his past albums; all of which contain material his elders may arguably not look favourably on 3) Prince constantly reminds us all that he is only interested in 'looking forward' not backwards - most recently his Bet acceptance speech and recent promotional interviews have indicated he regrets 'past mistakes' and that young artists 'don't have to do what (I) did....that he is not impressed with his past guitar work etc...
When I said what logic do ppl attach to the notion he will ever consider remasters I refer to allo fthe above i.e. nothig Prince has been saying the last 10 years has been at all indicative of the idea that this iseven remotely plausible.
Do i agree with what you both say? Yes, like many fans of course I do. Do I think remasters will ever be issued with prince's blessing? Hell no

Very true. For anyone who remembers, the Prince Ultimate compilation originally was sequenced with Erotic City but had to be scrapped as Prince wouldn't allow it since it doesn't mesh with his current religious beliefs. Unless he's since changed his tune (and if reports of him going door to door for his imaginary friend are true, he hasn't) there's no chance anyone is about to get remasters/reissues of his scandalous 80's material. No hard feelings.

is this what he meant when he said "U dont have 2 do what i did in my old days" on BET? Im just sayin lol U gonna have 2 fight ure own damn war cuz we dont wanna fight no more!!

I'm pretty sure, that he was really talking about signing off his master tapes and letting executive bosses have a say in his art. I do not, how ever, have any credible argument as to why I think that is what he meant, rather than his raunchy past. Other than he's constantly bringing up how new artists should keep their integrity, keep ownership of their art and generally don't be the Industry's puppet.
Maybe he regrets not having fought harder for the 3 lp Crystal Ball? I imagine an artist could very well have regrets about letting other people slice and dice his work.
Or maybe I really just don't want to believe that Prince can honestly regret 20 some years of his productive life. I'd rather think that he is actually soomewhat proud of himself, even if he'd never make that sort of lyrics or wear that little clothes today.
In essence - I think his regrets are: Business and loss of artistic integrity.

Nah, it was preceded by a comment about being wild in his younger days. How could "wild" mean signing a regrettable contract? I really don't think that was what he was talking about.
I almost thought he was talking about Alicia and her writhing on the piano lid, except he seemed to like that

Yes. In any format. Both sides should realize that even a limited pressing of remasters, box sets of outtakes/vault material, or videos and concerts, would restore the stream of revenue they both got from his 80's "base," the ones that bought every record and were the reason for platinum hit after platinum hit. I would love it if he went back with WB. If he was backed with money and better producers and engineers, just maybe he would be able to produce another classic Prince record. Maybe he's in discussions about a new Prince & the Revolution record... We should be so lucky.

I dunno, you might be right.
I just rarely take anything Prince say as face value, as it always seems to me that every word from his mouth is another wall in the labyrinth of dense "Huh?"-ness, that only the people in the know will get. And sometimes Prince dress up very trivial things in words that are overly dramatic, like "Slave", when a more appropiate, metaphorical word would have been "serfdom".
Just saying, Prince is hardly a man to say things clearly. But who am I to know anything for sure?

Like most fans, I would die for deluxe remasters of Prince's WB catalog. Can you imagine all of those albums, remastered with new tracks, b-sides, rarities, live versions, etc.?
And, not to mention the sound quality. I'd pay for a new SOTT with no new material simply if it sounded better.
So many artists have released back catalog material in "deluxe" format. It's a trend I really appreciate. Sure, many times it's just a grab at money for the artist, but no one is forcing you to buy. It's just great to have the option.
But, unless Prince really gets into a mess financially, I just don't see it happening.

Or maybe Prince want help from WB to hunt down every fans who has picture, songs or video of him on the internet. Prince the war against fans!!! Pray Jehova....

I find this meeting takes on new meaning after reading that Prince proclaimed the internet is over because it won't pay him in advance. If dude can go from getting awards for being an interent pioneer to proclaiming it "over", I have no doubt that he's worked out a logical way (in his wee little melon) for his packpedaling and working with WB to make perfect sense! (Which is to say, they offered him a lot of zeroes).

Right... he said "wild" but could have meant.. "imprudent" or "uncareful"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh, I wouldn't read too much into it, I believe in most cases the simplest definitions are the most relevant. I believe he meant in his sexual theatrics on stage, plain and simple. He also made the statement that the youth of today do not have and do need God. You can't have God in one hand and sexual immorality in the other, NO MATTER how much Prince tried to do so in his youth. We are all so full of here

This economy is making even Prince do things he thought he never would do. Remember the 'Warn A brotha' (Warner Brothers) situation? It's hard to understand why someone like Prince who was going through that entire 'slave' period and utter disdain for a company who wanted ultimate control of how he does his music to suddenly be forgetful enough to walk into the very place that caused the fiasco. It must be very hard times for Prince too. Wow is he a humanoid like us? I see a song in the works for this one. It should be called 'Econodisastrophy Recovered'. 'I miss the good ole days'

This kinda remind me of George Michael's situation with Sony. When he returned to Sony, the old folks who he was beefing with were replaced by newer folks. Could be the same scenario here.

I certainly would hope not, but you can be assured that there are some stragglers still around from those days. The public would be naive to think otherwise. Shall we assume that he needs help outside of his own enterprise? Is the economic situation pushing him to go back through merky waters? Whatever the case may be, I will support his decision. 0(--> [Edited 7/15/10 16:33pm] 'I miss the good ole days'

Why can't prince just release some remastered box sets like Genesis did.. maybe different periods in 3 different sets.. add a bunch of liner notes explaining "look.. this isn't me now. Here's why I made this back then. For those of you who want to see how an artist can grow, here it is".. and then if he feels bad for making it, then he could donate the money from those albums to starving children or burn victims or something that will do the world good. Wait.. in JW speak.. are burn victims going to hell if they need a blood tranfusion?... Anyways.. yeah he could use that money to do some good for the world. After all, you can't erase history.. it made you who you are today. I think that's true for everyone.
