I keep hearing BET is supposed to TRY and redeem themselves with another Michael Jackson Tribute that night, also.
Anyone else thinking like I am and wondering if Prince...well, if he even shows up for his own tribute, that is.
Maybe...just maybe...(Yes, I know WHO I'm talking about...but go with me for moment!) he might do the right thing and actually take part in the MJ tribute, as well and really give up some love for Michael, in the best way possible...musically, of course! Ensuring that Michael gets the tribute that he deserves?
Done right...he wouldn't even have to perform one of Michael's song. He could just make one. Preferably, just a GOOD one but if has just one last GREAT one in him, that would be the time to bring it...but hey, I'm just a Hater on the internet...what do I know?
On second thought, that's just probably waaaaay too much to to even think about. I'll just stick to hoping he shows up sans Larry!
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

You do know that Prince has already paid tribute to Michael in concert numerous times. So, I've you're looking for this to be the night Prince FINALLY makes his feelings known about Michael and pays tribute to him with this kick-ass version of Beat It, you're begging.
He's pretty much said and done everything he has to say about Michael's passing. He said Michael's death was tough because it's hard to lose someone you care about, and he's covered Shake Your Body, and I Want You Back in concert.
That's it. He shouldn't have to be obligated to do more than he already has.
He shouldn't have been obligated to do anything after Michael's death. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Uh, Prince wrote the songs in the Revolution era. So, Purple Rain would've been a hit with Prince, you, me, and 3 other random people in this board.
The album that had the most influence from the Revolution was Parade, but the biggest song on that album had no influence from them whatsoever.
You must be one of those people who actually think Lisa and Wendy wrote Purple Rain because of the movie.
They definitely contributed to his success, but they aren't the reason for it.
BET is paying tribute to PRINCE. Not Prince and the Revolution, or Prince with Lisa and Wendy. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I didn't say shit about finally and I damn sure sure didn't say anything about "Beat It", did I?
My question was since BET needs to redeem themselves for that whack ass tribute they gave Michael last year, would Prince, since if he shows up, would be there, actually participate, being that he'd be the only one in the building, qualified to do it as it really needs to be done?
Do not project your inability to comprehend, that's not nice. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I understand what you're saying but because there isn't many tv shows or music stations that show black actors and musicians. When the MTV channel came along they weren't playing any music from black artists. So when BET came out then black musicians had a channel that would play their videos. They just wanted to show a different light on black people and give them more chances. Not every tv station is showing or letting black people in the music, acting or political industry have a voice. You still see tv shows with one black person or none in a hit show. BET gives them an opportunity to be successful. We're more than maids, mammies, mommas and janitors. One day though I wish as a society we stop seeing color because to me Prince for example plays music for everyone. Music should have no color. The black community has been hard on him at times. They think he sold out. They didn't always get it. He is a musician that was inspired by different generes of music. We got to stop seeing it as black or white music. IT JUST IS. I'm sure you'd agree with me on that. Stay purple...May u live 2 see the dawn.

I don't think anybody is really capable of singing any of Prince's songs but I'm still excited as to see what they do. And I'm thrilled to be able to see Prince but if some rapper like Drake or r&b like Ginuwine does his songs I will be irritated.lol. I'm sure Prince won't allow for b.s. to on when it comes to him because he wouldn't do it then. I'd love if George Clinton,Sheila E.,Lenny Kravitz,Larry Graham and Chaka Khan were part of the celebration of Prince and of course NPG. But, I won't get my hopes up too much.lol. PEACE AND B WILD!

Ginuwine is already on Prince's black list...back in the late 90s this dude tried to cover "When Doves Cry" and he failed. Prince later talked about how pissed off he was about it.

Hey girl, speaking of Prince and MJ, my son had the nerve and audacity to come over my house today, with this T-shirt on, which I must say I love seeing the both of these two artists in that pic. It speaks volumes of 2 legends. He said anytime he wears it, people stop him in the street to ask him where he got it from. He said he actually bought this t-shirt 3 years ago, and now can't find another one like it, and doesn't remember where he bought it, but said when he saw it, he had to buy it. I wish I had a poster like that hat so I could hang it up. I must say I demanded he finds another one just like it and buy it for me..
Anyway, as far as Prince showing up, I read on another site that Dr.F twittered that Prince would be there. We shall see.

Personally, I don't think that Prince needs to do anything for Michael. Why should he? Michael was a great singer/performer, but just because he died, I don't see why Prince needs involvement in it.
Just sayin'. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

Yeah, I mean, I'm all for people who looked up to him, were inspired by him, or worked with him. Definately! But Prince? None of the above. Prince was doin' his thing, MJ was doin' his thing -- I don't think there is any reason for Prince to acknowledge the passing anymore than he already has.
And I'm not hating; I digs me some MJ. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

I want that shirt. | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So do I. My son bought that shirt in 2007 and it fits nice on him. He's 6'2" tall.
I remember when he called me up and said he wanted to show me a tshirt he bought, but only found one. I forgot he had that shirt. He said he couldn't find another one since. So when he came over today, I was thrown back by it, because just seeing two legends pictured together on that shirt, I thought about the upcoming Prince tribute, and MJ's death anniversary in the same week, and that image alone with the two of them on that shirt speaks volumes, and takes you back to when they first began their careers. The image of Prince reminds you of the Purple Rain era, and the MJ one reminds me of MJ's Billy Jean era. Two greats.

The simple answer is because BET fucked up so badly last year, nothing short of Prince participating in the tribute, will actually do.
The more complex answer is...looking at the big picture (a concept that is foreign to those with tunnel vision), it would be the right thing for Prince to do...at the right time...on numerous levels. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

If Prince does attend BET Awards and participates in a Michael Jackson tribute, it will have been a year since MJ's passing and all of the obligatory, exploitaive media-hype. A tribute could actually be heartfelt and real which would be nice and befitting both Prince and MJ.

I dont know how MJ got mixed up into this thread and dont want to further encourage it, but treading on dagerous waters, i cant think of a MJ song that would fit Prince's voice or style. What songs can you MJ fan think would work? Unless the arangement is completely changed up, but I know fans here are pretty narrow minded when it comes to this (Creep)
I cant see MJ's biggest hits working for Prince at all, Billie Jean? Thriller? Black or White? The only one I can see working for him is maybe "Man in The Mirror" and thats a big maybe.

:box: at the risk of getting lynched... what about Remember The Time? It was a huge hit considering the video and everything, its a production. I would think Prince would have to tweek it a bit to fit his style though?

It's very hard thinking of Prince's voice doing any of Michael's songs. But maybe, maybe "D.S." or "Give In To Me" (rock-based tracks) could work, epecially with Slash's guitar solos in the middle of each song that Prince could easily shred.
I can imagine Prince doing either of those tracks, and each person in the audience (except for Will.I.Am, who's a true hardcore MJ fan) looking around confused like: "What? What MJ song is that? That ain't on Thriller." "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Larry and Chaka doing a tribute for Prince, that would be sweeeet. They're his personal friends as well as fellow musicians. It would mean a lot for all of the 3. I'd love to see Chaka doing one of her songs that Prince worked on, along with one of Prince's (Questions of U or Joy In Repetition). Reflecting on the NPG days...
As for the MJ tribute, Stranger in Moscow, that would be the kind of song Prince can do justice and fits his style, except for the dancing Mike did at the live shows. Plus, the song SHOULD be played for the tribute. Why it's always gotta be about Thriller (the song)? Stranger in Moscow is one of the most important works throughout his entire career. Well, I posted this a few posts up in response to something:
I don't understand why you feel it's the RIGHT thing to do. Madonna dies tomorrow; does Prince HAVE to do the tribute? They were both huge around the same time.
It is just beyond me why just because they were both big around the same time, people make it seem like Prince has some sort of unspoken obligation to do more on the MJ front. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

Yes, I agree that Larry and Chaka should be involved, as well as, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder. People who know him on a personal level. I do think that Morris and the guys from the Time should have some type of involvement, as well as, Sheila E. I think that Sheila E. should do the honors of introducing him during the tribute and welcoming him on stage, once the tribute is done, before he comes on and gives his speech.
This would be a great time for Prince to speak to Black radio execs, personalities, etc., about reaching out and highlighting various forms of music by black artists on their stations; not just playing r&b type music to its listeners, because it sort of lumps black artists into one category, and after awhile, it gets boring to the listeners' ears, hearing the same types of music day in-day out. This way, various forms of music by our artists, wouldn't be so foreign to the ears of those who tune in to black radio stations, and it would bring exposure to various black artists who don't play the usual "r&b" type music.
During the tribute, I would love to hear Prince and Alicia Keys do a "Question of U" medley, llike where he incorporated part of Alicia's lyrics in "Falling" with "Question of U" during the Musicology tour. I also think some other younger artists who have mentioned that he has been an influence in their music , should have their minute or two iperforming in the medley of tribute songs.
I would not be surprised if Justin Timberlake, does a little part of the tribute, although many would disagree, because of his comment that he was bringing sexy back when his past album came out, and he did say that album was Prince influenced. S Prince fans seemed to have had a problem with that at the time, but I think he could do a couple of Prince tribute medleys.
I still think some other Prince-influenced artists should be showcased at the tribute, to highlight those today, who have been influenced by his music. Although they have their own following, artists like J*Davey (duo) and Esthero, could be highlighted, although they are not known on a national/ international level, as other artists, but would be nice to have their media moment, during his tribute, even if they sing a 2 minute version of one of his songs. Prince was nice enough to have them showcased his 3121 nightclub back in 2007, both artists have said in past interviews, that Prince was one of their influences.
