It's interesting that on a site where people are supposed to be fans we constantly bash him. He does an interview for Ebony and folk are mad because he chose a "black" publication. And that lead to a whole bunch of other stuff. I finally got a hold of the magazine and I understand why some are upset;however, as a longtime fan of his I knew it would be on his terms and not anything elaborate. Any frustration should be directed on Ebony who made it into more than it was, but it's all business and they want to sell magazines. And if his faith has led him into a new direction then that is awesome. I can respect that. God does come first. When he is ready to release new music I will be here. Oh please, anyone who has a descent amount of Jehovah Witness literature KNOWS that Witnesses don't believe in dating. They believe in courtship and that is ONLY with someone you truly think you have a strong possibility of marrying. Prince has kept Bria on the backburner for a long time and by now they should have either married or called it quits. But hell he like the way she getS him hot, he likes it when she shakes every thing she's got, he likes it when she dances cause it's so sexy ..... so he may not be marrying her but he ain' t putting her back on the market either. The guy is a musical genius, but Jesus-like he most deffinately is NOT. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

That's what I was wondering. I thought she was Hispanic. You know Blacks and Hispanics come in various shades. She's about as Black as Prince. The woman in UTCM was a Black French woman. She could have been Haitian but she scared Prince. A good lamp is the best police. *Ralph Waldo Emerson

Yes, I'm aware of that, I am African-American, but that actress has always appeared as one of Hispanic descent or bi-racial.
My question from the previous post, was in comparison to what you stated about Prince not putting black women in his videos of particular complexions, if any at all, and the very few, that you claim he did, in your opinion and others on this thread, you stated that he did not portray them in a positive light, (i.e. the one in PR and the one in UTCM). Now compared to how many black rappers/r&b artists, who are considered "down with the brothas" so-to-speak, who have publically exploited black women in their videos/movies, by often referring to black women as "bitches and hos", and having the images of Black women in their videos/movies, as that of a stripper/streetwalker type, do you feel as strongly or the same way towards those artists, who exploited Black women, and continue to do so, as strongly as you feel about the few Black women you state that Prince did not reflect them in a positive light in his past films?
Do artists within our black communtiy who are considered "brothas" who continue to degrade Black women through their art, get to keep their "brothaman pass?" And if so, shouldn't folks here be raising hell about them too? [Edited 6/14/10 11:15am]

Given the lyric of the songs on Lotusflow3r were most likely written before 2008 and he has steadily been seen with her since 2007 I would say somewhere around there. Jehovah Witnesses don't act like he does. Most aren't straight up hypocrits who put their girlfriend on the back burner and then move her to the front when they have some "Elixer" to do. Prince is still Prince and he no longer pushes the envelope with the music industry but instead pushes the envelope with his religion and what is and is not OK. I believe that his silicon enhanced video vixen has been shaking evering thing she's got, and he's been liking it alot for some time now. What he does "when it gets me hot" to cool off I have no idea. Maybe when Larry and the others gathered for prayer they gave glory to Jah for Bria, baby, cause she is so such a sexy dancer and then finished with a blasphemous Hallelujah.
Slightly off topic (Notice too that all his best spiritual songs, God, the ladder, 4 the Tears in your eyes, 7, etc were written before this weird friendship with Larry. Other then Last December I can't see a truly beautiful spiritual song in the last decade. If I hadn't been told that Immersion was about a Baptism I wouldn't have known it was, however the subject of "here I come" is as clear as Darling Nikki and Elixer is as clearly about what it is about as any of his oral sex songs. I was pretty sad that Lotusflow3r did not have a strong spiritual song. I miss that side of prince and I don't think the boastful "mr goodnight (planet earth) or their never be another one like me type of songs are a good replacement for the honest seeking songs of his past) There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. See my post reply #92 about him standing next to a Black woman in his video. The other things you mention about artists within the Black community needs it own thread. I don't condone how they degrade Black women in videos. I do think Prince needs to stop frontin'. He didn't sell out he SOLD out and this is why he's talking now about the White's business he use to love so much before he grew up. A good lamp is the best police. *Ralph Waldo Emerson

Okay, but I didn't say you called him a sellout, just thought I would get your opinion of how other artists have "sold out" at the expense of the image of black women, in comparison to how you and others feel how Prince did the same. No prob. Thanks. [Edited 6/14/10 12:43pm]

He questions the interviewer if they ever heard of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Wall Street, and states that it is more about equality and freedom than skin color, and that "Diversity in Ownership" should be basically be demanded from America's current administration.
I believe his mentioning "Harlem Renaissance and "Black wall Street" was to give the interviewer an idea of the time when many Blacks had their own wealth and how independent they were as well as, having ownership and control of their own businesses.
I felt his asking the interviewr this was a bit insulting to their inteligence and the inteligence of Ebony readers. Ebony has talked about Harlem Renaissance and Black Wall Street before and Ebony readers tend to be a little more sophisticated than say....readers of BLACK MEN and VIBE.
Anyway...I've steered clear of this thread only because P didn't say anything that was new or unexpected. He is clearly in a stage of learning and discovery...I just wish he wouldn't act like we all just came to class for the first time.

Something tells me that for all his talk about being concerned with the issues of African Americans, Prince isn' t a regular reader of Ebony and has no clue what they discuss in issues inwhich he is not the coverboy. Darn, I shouldn't have even mentioned Monte. Dude isn't Black. My mistake. That's probably why he was never made to look/act like an imbecile like the others back then. And he did actually speak once onscreen. With the one line he had in "Grafitti Bridge," he was the only one Prince made act "cool" in the group.

Yes. Of course. They're the opposite, but just as bad, and I don't watch their videos or support their work at all. My favorite male rappers are NOT like them (and like my favorite Black male artists in general, they consistently portray us beautifully). It's ironic too because the few rappers I like are 100x better lyricists/musicians than these derogatory types you're referring to anyway, lol. So I don't even desire to listen to Hip-Hop artists that degrade us either, 'cause they usually sound as stupid/illiterate as their videos look. Gosh, the man is seeemingly hypocritical with his religion too in people's eyes. Dang. I've wanted to believe he intensely studies the Bible, but I don't know....Based on what he shows, his words never coincide with his actions. Damn you guys. You all are off the chain today. I am going to chime in by saying I am a dark skinned black woman who has chastised Prince on many occasions about not seeing our beauty. When I was younger I was told I was black and ugly and I never was going to get anybody because I did not have straight hair or light skin. None of this is true of course but when I fell in love with Prince's music and saw the pattern of the women he dates I was incredibly disheartened. I so badly did not want him to be like the other celebrities in this regard. Well he is 52 now and that hope has been extinguished.
He is confused about a lot of things but I do not think he is a malicious being. At least he is trying to say something positive even if we disagree with it. This is his "experience" as he likes to say. What we take from it is up to us. I have been pissed at this guy too many times but I realize for all his rantings about God etc. there are a lot of positive things about him too. He doesn't have a bunch of illegitimate kids running around, he is not molesting kids, he has not thrown away his fortune on some bullshit, he is not in a drug induced haze everytime you talk to him etc. My point is he could be doing worse things as a human being.
Furthermore I think if we could get rid of Larry Graham he could come full circle and evolve spiritually in a more natural way and breathe that intense passion back in his music again too.

Yeah, it's only like, 4, lol. One from the 80s, one from the 90s, and two current, that I know of. Other rappers I like didn't really concentrate on showing women/romance at all, but just wrote brilliant lyrics about life. Thank you! Not to mention Chili from TLC and Kenya Moore and Ananda Lewis and Tamar. Hell,,,,he was almost gonna marry Nona!
The problem is people get stuck on a certain image and they want to blame Prince for that. To say Prince is not attracted to black women is like saying Tommy Lee isn't attracted to brunettes. We all know that isn't true but some of us got stuck on stupid when we saw the same beauty image 3 times. We convinced ourselves there was a habit and a tendency when in reality we just didn't pay close enough attention to what else was going on.
Heck...let's not forget to throw in a blonde for Prince....hello Kim Bassinger. And who was that fine ass sistah in Black Sweat? I forget her name. Prince didn't date her but she was the lead in the video and the role could have gone to a white or hispanic woman but Prince chose a hot and sexy black woman because nothing else would have been appropriate...(cut to the scene were Princey is reading a magazine with Tamar on the cover).
People need to let this "Prince don't like the sistahs" bullshit go. It's getting old like rancid milk.

You are going to have race issues because in America we have those problems . So within our community we are going to have issues, but thats changiing. Everything is 'new' we have a black President yes you have racist people in the White House. But that is all over America so being said this old mind set and think new. So even when we look over history we can tell our Children how far we have came.

http://www.contactmusic.c...e-betrayal Prince doesn't seem to be courteous and have too much respect for the Black woman in my opinion. Like most men I'm sure he'll have sex with the fine ones mentioned. I don't think he'll ever hold a Black woman's hand or marry one. Looking at his pass actions Black women shouldn't feel bad. Newsflash! Prince is not courteous or respectful toward women period! He's egotistical and he's a hornytoad. Men like that don't revere women on any level. Prince has had sex with many women and yet he's only married two of them...one of whom he cheated on wifey #1 with. His first he waited some years before putting a ring on her finger.
With respect to what we see in his music videos...he isn't and hasn't made any different lead choices than the rest of these brothas out here from the rappers to the crooners to the rockers. At the end of the day it's about what the general public responds to. Perhaps he is just giving the fans what they want. I was told Tamar was treated very harshly on this site. She was a black woman that Prince dated and tried to promote musically and there was negative commentary about her look - basically fans wanted to see another Vanity and then we got her complete with fake boobs and weak voice.

You may have a good point Desiree. It is true that many fans here and on another site that no longer exists, made very, derogatory comments about Tamar back in 2005/2006, for the sake of making those nasty comments, which I thought was very sad, because many fans here seemed to have an issue with Prince promoting a darker-skinned black female, and some were outright jealous and fumed to no end, because he did. There were constant comments that she was not his "type" of protege, and they constantly tried to compare her looks/physical image to those former proteges.
Some here bave even made similar comments about Shelby J, whose been his backup singer since around 2006/2007, as well. It does seem that when he is surrounded by darker-skinned female singers, gives them props, it's many of his fans that seem to have "issues" with that. People can google these threads to see if we're telling the truth, and they will probably have no problem finding them. So you may be right Desiree, he may just be giving many fans just what they ask for,.
Remember the lyrics to "Future Baby Mama?" The first part of the lyrics seems to have referenced what some fans over the years, always seem to think they know what kind of woman is his "type".
