It sounds like he desperately tries to have a radio hit again. That's almost too commercial coming from an artist like prince.

It sounds nothing like Raspberry Beret. The intro is a straight rip of the demo version of Guitar.

Oh so now you've heard it? Can anyone who has heard it provide any more details?

It was a pop tune, sort of catchy. I would have to listen to it a couple of times before I decide if I like it. Somehow it reminded me a bit of Raspberry beret.

It sounds like a b-side from Jack Johnson or Sheryl Crow.

I know this is veering slightly off topic but I really don't have a problem with the intention and context of Purple and Gold. It is a football "Fight Song" given to the Vikes rather than us Prince fans. It really isn't meant to be a Prince song that we as lovers of funk/pop/rock/soul would necessarily like. I would not normally listen to a single fight song depsite being an NFL fan.

It's pure fizzy fluff. The intro feels a lot like the demo version of Guitar - has that sort of 60s pop beat to it. He uses the same kind of Guitar-like vocal effects in it, too. The lyrics are about hanging out with your friends in the summer - nothing deeper than that.

That's your opinion and it's not written in gold, what you hear from a song is not what everyone hears, and it damn sure doesn't sound like Guitar to me. Doesn't surprise me that you would jump in as usual and say something about my comment.

Perhaps you've not been listening to Prince's music.

Cream

Diamonds and Pearls

Rasperry Beret

Guitar

Raspberry Beret

Little Red Corvette

Batdance

Partyman

U Got The Look

That's just a tiny sampling of pointedly commercial hits from Prince. Let's also not forget "Purple Rain", which was a song inspired by Fink telling Prince about that rock ballad thing Bob Seger had going on at the time, and Prince couldn't understand why folks were flocking to hear Seger in the early 80's. Let's not forget the whole Purple Rain album which was a LOT more rock and radio friendly than anything he'd done to that point, making it very commercial friendly. "Commercial" isn't bad. "Product made in quality and width to serve wide variety of areas".

Did we forget about "housequake" being in a VW commercial? Same with "Little Red Corvette". Did we forget the massive Verizon tie-in he did with "Guitar"???

I know his music very well, and I don't have a problem with his catchy pop songs at all. I've grown up in the 80s and LOVE simplistic pop music. But this new song isn't what I expect from prince nowadays. It could be a song from anybody, there's nothing special about it, unlike the other tunes you named.

Oh, and I really don't think that "Batdance" is a very commercial song. It only did so well because of the big hype for the movie at the time.

Yeah right, you're hilarious, my opinions of the song is mine, not for you to tell me or anyone else what it doesn't sound like because you don't agree with them. But continue doing what you do best, like you did at the npgmc site, going after folks you don't like, attack their opinions, then when they respond, you turn around and accuse them of being inflammatory and making up all kinds of lies about them, give it a rest, and let people have their own opinions without attacking them. You've been doing this since 2006, it's 2010, let it go and move on. Now back on topic.

Y'know...yeah...I can see that. The lyrics aren't as good, though.

Keep in mind - I'm trying to describe it based on one listen. And every time someone asks, "Is it like this or that?" and I listen to that song, it becomes more muddled. lol

Hey guys - we'll play the new song "Hot Summer" later today - definitely in 12 noon hour (Central US time), and probably again in afternoon.

It's been a wild few months getting to have conversations with Prince and hear and world debut new unreleased music, the first of which was "Cause and Effect" and now with "Hot Summer."

He's definitely back in Minneapolis, and from our conversation at Paisley Park a few weeks ago that not only included listening to and talking about his new music, but also about artists like Janelle Monae, Kings Go Forth, and Brother Ali - he's a Current listener and fan. He expressed a lot of respect for what we do and how passionate we are about music, and I think that's why he's been into sharing his new music with us to share with you.

Enjoy the new tune!

Ohhhhhh. I see the problem. You're one of those people who thinks that every time someone expresses an opinion, they have to state explicitly, "In my opinion..."

Well, I'm sorry if you can't grasp when an opinion is being expressed without someone spelling it out for you (and apologizing for it, which I'm sure is what you'd prefer). And what kind of lies did I make up about you? You do edit your posts - especially when someone takes issue with you.

You've kept track of my posts since 2006? Huh. I can't decide whether that's flattering or stalkerish. I'll have to ponder that for awhile.

Don't even try it Keithy. lol

It could have been a fight song for people who happened to be in tenth grade along with Richie Cunningham and Potsie in the 50s, but modern fight songs do not sound like P&G...even in high school.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
