I wouldn't call them samples, but I never thought about "Shake!". That kind of keyboard hit isn't new in Prince's music, and certainly not in music in general. "Cream" has the same keyboard style in it. Even "The Beautiful Ones", which is a lot slower, has the same basic riff. I guess that almost always makes for a cool and catchy song, because even though it's familiar, it's still new.

It has a little bit of that "Shake!" guitar too

The underwatery call-and-response middle eight is great but I don't get the rest. Prince obviously knows what he was trying to do and I'm not in any way shape or form qualified to criticise Prince's work. Reactionary nonsense like 'It's fuckin shit!' really is the lowest common denominator. One step thinking like that really has no place when trying to decipher artist as capable of such a myriad of themes, moods and colours as Prince. He's a genius who is trying to convey something different with every song. I just don't get - or like- what he's putting across here. Good for those who dig it. I'm sure, if it's on the album, it'll make sense. Maybe it's just a teaser lyric for his fans about the summer of new music and gigs ahead. I dunno. Who cares? It's only rock n roll.
