For a musician, Prince was far superior to the likes of Elvis (and other musicians who attempted acting, Madonna included), and though not perfect, he was still able to pull off Purple Rain.

Graffiti Bridge and UTCM, in my opinion, weren't terrible because Prince can't act, but because the audience couldn't relate to or understand the 'plight' of the protagonists in the story. (yes, I think UTCM was terrible, even though parts of it was entertaining).

UTCM was a vanity piece, and despite relatively believable chemistry, it was mired in really awkward dialogue and a plot that didn't really build. The audience is left to either adore him just cause he's Prince and they like the little jokes, or the audience is wondering why the spent good money to see the film. The plot isn't believable, the dialogue is silly, and the climax feels rushed and less-than-stellar. It was a bad movie, but had entertaining parts.

Graffiti Bridge was an abortion of a movie. The musical performances weren't great, the setting was terrible, the dialogue surpassed the mediocrity of all his previous efforts including the SOTT concert film, and it just sucked ass. What makes it even worse, is that the kid doesn't even really seem to care about losing his club (which is tension in the plot). Prince essentially kills his own plot by presenting a protagonist that doesn't really even care about 'having a popular club'. Shit, even if the protagonist doesn't care, at least there has to be elements in the movie that causes the audience to care, and GB wasn't there.

Thus, the problem ain't his acting---It's his writing, his direction, and his muddled vision.

I think a true 'sequel' to PR would be excellent. But the storyline would have to be completely different. GB shared too many similar themes and failed to capture any of the success of those themes in PR. Purple Rain was essentially a redemption story. Graffiti Bridge wasn't even that.
For a true sequel, perhaps 'the kid' could have experienced all of this success for the last 20 years, and the storyline can deal with the isolation or fear of 'being relevant'. Perhaps show how complicated his relationships with people become. Perhaps even introduce a protege (and ongoing theme in his real life lol), and perhaps you could introduce a redemption story or a story that shows how the protege helps him to find his own fire again or his own muse again. Something more nuanced and showing more emotional variation that PR. Something more mature.

And of course, it would have to have a great song and dance sequence---Graffiti Bridge lacked any element of that.

I'm not opposed to a Prince movie project. However, other than giving a rough sketch of his ideas, I don't think Prince should be involved in the script, direction nor production. Just the acting and what he's a genius at--the music.

I agree with a true PR sequel comment. GB apart from being crap is just not where Prince would have been at post Purple Rain. The ending of PR was meant to make you feel he was gonna go on to be a superstar not a club owner having the same old squabbles. Of course it wont happen as I just cant see prince having the inclination

I'd like to see him perform the role he once passed up. Labrynth, David Bowie took the part, even Michael Jackson turned it down. But there is talk of a remake so maybe now would be a good time and to write a new song to fit. He had a song for happy feet. Or have a character he perform the voice only for an animated film.

how about a 15 minute short, set entirely within a train station where Prince wanders around being popular and.....er..... well that's about it

Complete with a Dancing street gang, babyhair, and really gay outfits?

well either that or a romantic comedy where the lead character gets shot by the coastguard at the end

most definitely

i also agree that this stage of his life could lead to interesting expressions of fiction

now that i think about it...i would LOVE this; it does not even have to go big; he should do something low key and share it with his fans

I would like to see him appear on The Daily Show and do a 'This Week In God' segment. It would give him a chance to just chill and show off his mellow side some more.Even just to have him on the show would be great because Jon Stewart wouldn't let him pull any jazz.

The Colbert Report would be a fun time too.I can just see it now.Stephen saying something stupid about Prince and the whole studios lights go off and then purple and gold spot lights get turned on.Fog mists across the stage and then BAM!Prince appears playing a funky jam to win Stephen over and the rest is history!

as 4 me, i'd like to see the kid emerge in prince's current stage of life.
a fictional approach to his real life including joys and blues; culminating
in the kid organising a huge show where his friends show up and jam. prince
could have a live arena concert of this, and record it for the film...the ideas or possibilities are endless

Prince ~ Come to Michigan to film your movie (if U decide 2 do 1). We will give U a 35% tax incentive to do so! I have a production company and studio that would B honored to help U out in anyway possible. I also have a database filled with beautiful, professional, local talent that could fill every role. If U wanted a harem of beautiful models and actress to be in the film, I got U covered.Tee hee... Detroit misses U, just wanted U 2 know.....

I know this may be sounds dumb. But, I imagion that Prince in Sex in The City third sequal (If there be a third sequal). He appearces to be a club owner/musican, who get flirty by Samantha. They went to his private office and door close. Few mintues later, Samantha wobbling out of his office, flopped to her chair next to Carrie and breathess said, "I never seen a guy who's 5'1, but he sure knows how to work it out!"

lol Boy! Look like Samantha had met her match!

nod Yep, it did. Why does being 5'1 (he's taller than that) have to do with her walking wobbly, or knowing how to work it out? It's nonsensical.

I could see him in a Tyler Perry movie. Kinda like the role Mary J Blige had in " I Can Do Bad All By Myself". His character shows up, gives some advice to the MAIN CHARACTERS, belts out a song or two, and then stays the hell out of the way. OMG, just one scene with Prince and Madea would be well worth the $10.

Well, my guess is that Samantha aways goes out and have sex with mostly younger men. But, if she meet Prince. He show her how that some 'ageless" men over 50 can be sexy as well.

Hell no. His movies suck! The only reason why I loved Purple Rain was because it was kinda the first of it's kind and it has the best soundtrack ever. Also, it gave us a "semi" and I mean "SEMI" biographical look at the purple one's life. I'd rather see him do more interviews, or maybe even a documentary on a day in the life of Prince. I think this dude's name is Kevin Smith or something, he talks about his attempts to film a biography on Prince and how much of a butthole Prince was about the whole thing even though he summoned Kevin to film the flick. I dare not post the link here, but you can google director "Kevin Smith talks about filming for Prince". It's actually very comical.
Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I think Prince should co-star in a movie as himself, Prince. However, the film will be fiction and it would be a really BIZARRE film such as Donnie Darko or Vanilla Sky.

Prince won't be the main star, but an important part of the story. Like, maybe there is a serial killer running around murdering people to Prince songs and somehow he becomes involved through the FBI.

Anyway, have some whitey cult-type director involved so it's both real artsy and very successful. Then all the white hipster kids will like it and will bring Prince back to the forefront in a huge way.

2. The Lotusflow3r website debacle
3. The giving away of CD's in a British tabloid
4. The gag order hes put on the press

Seriously, this man is the Ghaddafi of the music world, any movie he would make would incite a riot.

1. Not a movie, and what's a fiasco about the book? It's a fucking coffee table book. WTF are you people bitching about w/ that book? He wasn't rewriting War & Peace or something.
2. Not a movie
3. Not a movie, and the Brit's seemed to love it
4. Not a movie, and you can't put a gag order on a free press, especially when you're a musician. The best way he can put a gag on something is to just not speak.

I watched the Johnny Depp musical-film "Sweeny Todd" for the first time today, and couldn't stop pondering about how Prince could have played the HECK out of that role. Johhny was perfect as Todd of course, but Prince would have been a good choice as well, considering he had/has the face, voice, everything for it. This isn't a joke. At this point, a dark character like that is the only thing I can picture Prince portraying in film. shrug

@WaterInYourBath --- I'm not so sure about him being in Sweeney Todd. It's too dark for P and I don't think he could get the rage/anger/insanity that George Hearn/Johnny Depp were able to convey.

I would love to see Prince cameo in a movie as a silly/unexpected character, like Tom Cruise did in that recent movie I can't remember the title of, and like Eddie Murphy did in several of his movies, using makeup to look like a completely different person.

He just needs to release live DVD's. There has to be hundreds of them & I bet @least 80% of them are amazing & jaw dropping. I think we know his track records on movies & films in general, hell even his official DVDs aren't the best quality but the talent of the musician is. I still don't understand why he wouldn't officially release more live material on DVD, it's a straight money maker.
