PRINCE FEYING OUT in front of FRIENDS. I haven't done this in years and years.
But at one time, I was quite proud of being a Prince fan, so I would try and play his music around my friends. Sometimes, they'd dig it--sometimes not. But there are just certain parts in songs that are like cryptonite to heterosexual males--even men that aren't intrinsically homophobic, that are so full of FEY that it makes them wince. Some friends of mine came over once to help me run CAT-5 Cable throughout my new home (wireless hadn't caught on yet), and I was bumping to Emancipation. Then "La la la means I love you" came on (during random play), and the part where Prince starts singing "So many guys have come to you...." one of my friends yelled "Dan!!!!" as in 'Dan, you gotta be fucking kidding me...' and I said, "It's a good song! " Then the part where he sings , "Can U listen to me..." and does some super high pitched dog-whistle cry/laugh/yip yip type of thing I get a unanimous, "Dan!!!" from all 3 of my friends. We eventually had play to Nine Inch Nails. It seems there are certain Prince records that repel some heterosexual males. Emancipation, LoveSexy, For You---all of them can cause limp dick in that regard. Have you ever tried playing your songs to straight guys? How do they react? It seems a Prince fan has to "get" Prince much like a Smiths fan has to "get" The Smiths to understand the brilliance. And yes, Prince is extremely gay in so many, many ways--but he's also very straight. He's complex. . [Edited 5/13/10 21:11pm]

If your friends are up in arms about those lyrics (which are someone else's, not his), then fuck 'em. That's their issue, not yours. It's of them to react like that. Silly.

I agree. This isn't about what makes a person a good person. This is about what songs some straight guys have an 'eww' factor about.

the first thing you should have learned as a Prince fan was WHICH SONGS YOU DON'T PLAY IN FRONT OF YOUR FRIENDS.

I don't get it, "So many guys have come to you...."...what's gay about that? Is he singing it to a guy?

That's the way I thought about it at that time. But the delivery was what made them squirm. The falsetto had a little-bo-peep air to it. Ironically, songs like "If I was Ur Girlfriend" which could easily be confused for something it isn't, never had that affect on my straight friends---some instantly dug it.

I can't give example of how guys among guys react to Prince music, but I do know that if you play music/or talk to non-music fanatic guys who are super straight, they wouldn't get into Prince. For the sheer reason that over the years, Prince's looks etc have brought them to a "I don't know what he is" judgement, so "I'll play it safe and stay away." I'm removing my original post because it's kind of weird to propose. So my next response is that you're talking about your browneye in your post. Doesn't that mean asshole? And even if it does mean asshole, isn't that perfectly ok? Your anus is just the other side of a very long tube that ends with your mouth, and I don't see why we shouldn't insert objects into either side, honestly. But that's just me. I love my signature and if you don't you don't need to read it. -----> hahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahahahahaha<----- [Edited 5/14/10 7:31am]

Conversely, there are a few songs of his that really grab the straight guys, sometimes when you don't expect it. I messed around with a straight guy in college, and I believe it had a lot to do with how much he loved "Thunder." Good times. Also, "The Sacrifice of Victor" and "Face Down" have, in my experience, always been very straight-friendly. And I've yet to meet a straight guy who didn't love "Pussy Control," which I would argue was really Prince's biggest hit of the '90s.

I have a friend who loved Prince´s version of ´Honky Tonk Women´ but hated the falsetto chorus. And the ballads, I dont even show them...hehehe

This reminded me of being a teenager, back in the 80's and my boyfriend at the time was a biker type, into AC/DC, when we'd be driving around in his car, I insisted on playing my Controversy tape (which I loved), he complained alot, but at the end of the day it grew on him although he never admitted it, hehe I think Icrossed the line when I made a bunch of lads sit thruogh the Lovesexy tour one night.. maybe that was the beginning of the end of that relationship, hehe!!

Anyhoo, Jack U Off and Head were always two songs that I wouldn't play in front of any guys I knew. I know P is talking to a girl in each song, but I typically don't think of a guy jacking a girl off or a guy giving a girl head, it's usually the other way around. And if a bunch of guys heard P screaming about jacking somebody off or giving them head, then, well..... [Edited 5/14/10 9:45am]
