This reminded me of being a teenager, back in the 80's and my boyfriend at the time was a biker type, into AC/DC, when we'd be driving around in his car, I insisted on playing my Controversy tape (which I loved), he complained alot, but at the end of the day it grew on him although he never admitted it, hehe lol I think Icrossed the line when I made a bunch of lads sit thruogh the Lovesexy tour one night.. maybe that was the beginning of the end of that relationship, hehe!! lol

I played to the lovesexy tour to my friend.

He hated half of it, and thought some of it was very impressive (the guitar playing).

The piano part where Prince is dressed up sort of like a cross between the Vampire Lestat and Marie Antionette and when the audience sings along and Prince pauses then goes... "awwwww...."

...Well, that almost got me my ass kicked. neutral

At one time I thought ALL his songs were praiseworthy. Since then my assessment of his talents has mellowed and become more down to earth. lol

What songs would YOU not play in front of friends? lol

With my friends it was generally ALL.

I did convert a few when i took them to see him live in 2007 and then they all requested compiliations, but way back when I was a nipper I learnt very young that like many things that gave me the most pleasure, it was best done in my room alone

I'm a straight dude and this song is a cringer for me as well. I don't listen to it at all....not to say I don't listen to other fruity songs. But I understand his friend requesting a track change. Some shit just ain't appropriate for a group of dudes 2 b listin' to. Kind of like the "show tunes" element of Land of the Lost.

Play that back to back with Solo and you'll lose every friend you ever had. lol

I was 16 in 1994. At the time in Wales, everyone was listening to Oasis,
Blur, and other '90's indie rock anthemic bands. Funk was not a generally known genre.
In fact, I dare say the only funk band that had gained major recognition
amongst my peer group were The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Anyway, at a time when his Royal Badness was busy doing his Gold Era
underground funk thing, he was also releasing The Most Beautiful Girl
In The World that went straight to the No.1 spot in the U.K.
To my misery of course. Because of that single success alone, it became
difficult to earn respect from the grunge brigade when I would reveal my
love of 'TAFKAP'. The general opinion of Prince amongst my peers was that
he was a gay diva - and had no idea that he even played guitar, let alone
was a virtuoso!
I'm sure other org users roughly my age and coming from the U.K will
have similar stories of woe to tell.

I haven't done this in years and years.

But at one time, I was quite proud of being a Prince fan, so I would try and play his music around my friends. Sometimes, they'd dig it--sometimes not.

But there are just certain parts in songs that are like cryptonite to heterosexual males--even men that aren't intrinsically homophobic, that are so full of FEY that it makes them wince.

Some friends of mine came over once to help me run CAT-5 Cable throughout my new home (wireless hadn't caught on yet), and I was bumping to Emancipation.

Then "La la la means I love you" came on (during random play), and the part where Prince starts singing "So many guys have come to you...." one of my friends yelled "Dan!!!!" as in 'Dan, you gotta be fucking kidding me...' and I said, "It's a good song! rolleyes"

Then the part where he sings , "Can U listen to me..." and does some super high pitched dog-whistle cry/laugh/yip yip type of thing I get a unanimous, "Dan!!!" from all 3 of my friends.

neutral

We eventually had play to Nine Inch Nails. neutral

It seems there are certain Prince records that repel some heterosexual males.

Emancipation, LoveSexy, For You---all of them can cause limp dick in that regard.

Have you ever tried playing your songs to straight guys? How do they react?

It seems a Prince fan has to "get" Prince much like a Smiths fan has to "get" The Smiths to understand the brilliance.
And yes, Prince is extremely gay in so many, many ways--but he's also very straight. He's complex. neutral

[Edited 5/13/10 21:11pm]

Even gay friends of mine (and myself) get a bit uncomfy with a lot of the sugary stuff on Emancipation. But Solo and Wedding feast would probably have anyone rush to the toilets smile

PS I have no idea what "Fey" means.

I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. The top three responses are

1 fairly gay, as applied to a heterosexual male with homosexual stereotypical traits - "Just because your fiance has a shoe obsession and plucks his eyebrows doesn't mean he's gay; rather, he's fey."

2 The charactaristics one takes on before they will die, this often implies the individual knows of their death - "Before his execution William Wallace had a fey look in his eyes."

3 Corrupted Gaelic name for the fairies - "The fey are ever welcome in my home."

I can only assume that The Void's friends are concerned with suffering a death like Mel's at the end of Braveheart. wink

But seriously, I have never edited playing Prince on the basis of feyness. There are certain songs that I don't play to my Mother in Law.

And I've yet to meet a straight guy who didn't love "Pussy Control," which I would argue was really Prince's biggest hit of the '90s.

I would agree, as a club DJ from '98-'02 it was my most requested Prince track and as much a dance floor filler as Kiss, Erotic City & Gett Off (the other 3 Prince songs I continuously got requests for.)
Another DJ I worked with was always trying to get his hands on my gold promo vinyl copy of Gold Experience so he could scratch with it... of course I never let him see it, much less play it/scratch with it. Funk dat! biggrin

Jack U Off and Head were always two songs that I wouldn't play in front of any guys I knew. I know P is talking to a girl in each song, but I typically don't think of a guy jacking a girl off or a guy giving a girl head, it's usually the other way around. And if a bunch of guys heard P screaming about jacking somebody off or giving them head, then, well....

I've heard Head used as a term for going down on guys and for girls many, many times. But, I have NEVER, (with the exception of course of Prince's song) heard Jack Off to describe fingering a girl.In my experience it is exclusively used to describe a hand job for a guy.

Its as interchangable as head is - head is just slang for oral sex which, as you say, can be performed on both people. "Jack off" is just a euphemism for masturbation and, again, this can be performed on both (and, of course, solo! eek )

BTW - the word "fay" is an ancient (middle) English word meaning "fairy".
