Ha! Great thread.

The cover of Lovesexy is usually the one to hide when my, shall we say 'old-fashioned' dad comes round.

Whatever you do, don't play your mates any demos Prince has done for female proteges. eg. his version of Never Be Another Fool. ("I'll never open my legs again to man who's insecure").

Could be the final nail in the coffin mate.

PS I have no idea what "Fey" means.

It's Internet friendly for gay-as-hell.

I actually had to look the word up. Seems the official dictionary definition is 'otherworldly, imp or fairy-like'

Nuff said. cool

I was 16 in 1994. At the time in Wales, everyone was listening to Oasis,
Blur, and other '90's indie rock anthemic bands. Funk was not a generally known genre.
In fact, I dare say the only funk band that had gained major recognition
amongst my peer group were The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Anyway, at a time when his Royal Badness was busy doing his Gold Era
underground funk thing, he was also releasing The Most Beautiful Girl
In The World that went straight to the No.1 spot in the U.K.
To my misery of course. Because of that single success alone, it became
difficult to earn respect from the grunge brigade when I would reveal my
love of 'TAFKAP'. The general opinion of Prince amongst my peers was that
he was a gay diva - and had no idea that he even played guitar, let alone
was a virtuoso!
I'm sure other org users roughly my age and coming from the U.K will
have similar stories of woe to tell.

O+>

Ohhh, soooo true. By that period Prince was so under the radar and it was so hard to explain to people why I dug him so much. Then he had his first ever No.1 in England with TMBGITW and he was back in the public eye, I was like "NOOOOO!!!! There's more to him than the falsetto!".

Jack U Off and Head were always two songs that I wouldn't play in front of any guys I knew. I know P is talking to a girl in each song, but I typically don't think of a guy jacking a girl off or a guy giving a girl head, it's usually the other way around. And if a bunch of guys heard P screaming about jacking somebody off or giving them head, then, well....

I've heard Head used as a term for going down on guys and for girls many, many times. But, I have NEVER, (with the exception of course of Prince's song) heard Jack Off to describe fingering a girl.In my experience it is exclusively used to describe a hand job for a guy.

Prince does the same thing for 'motherfucker' though.
You Sexy Motherfucker, I have NEVER before Prince's song heard that.
Like ever. Guys were always motherfuckers--women were always 'bitches'.

I think Prince deliberately made the lyrics vague in a Joan Jett sense and he
knew what he was doing.

I remember when he said:
Bambi, cant you understand?
Bambi, it's better with a man...

There are a million better ways to phrase this so that it isn't ambiguously
sexual. I mean, is he saying it's better with a man from his own point
of view? lol. And if he's certain that it is better with a man
yet not speaking from his own homo-erotic experience, how would he know?
lol

It's deliberately vague to make the lyric more provocative.
It's almost like he's coming out without having to come out. lol

But that's a topic for a whole other thread.

His first 3 albums would be exceedingly difficult for me to play
to my straight male friends. Most of the songs are falsetta--guys seem
to detest that---my latino and black friends would be more open to
that expression, but not my white friends.

I wonder what my new Thai friends would think. hmmm
They'd probably be creeped out by Prince but not for any of
the 'fey' factors. lol

Poor Prince. I feel like I'm a purple soldia sometimes. lol

Its as interchangable as head is - head is just slang for oral sex which, as you say, can be performed on both people. "Jack off" is just a euphemism for masturbation and, again, this can be performed on both (and, of course, solo! eek )

BTW - the word "fay" is an ancient (middle) English word meaning "fairy".

Fair enough. BUT, nobody I've ever met has or would use the term when speaking about manual manipulation of a female. It's certainly only common to use discussing a guy getting hand...

Well, I live in the Southern United States, and it goes a layer deeper. Not only do all males I know consider Prince gay along with his music, but they also consider any man who listens to it gay. Soooo, even though I am a hetero and married with two kids, I remain a closet listener.

I remember one friend opening my CD collection, and there are pages of Prince CD's there, all of them in alphabetical order even. He looked at the collection, and then looked me with a raised eyebrow. I knew then... I knew then.

This reminded me of being a teenager, back in the 80's and my boyfriend at the time was a biker type, into AC/DC, when we'd be driving around in his car, I insisted on playing my Controversy tape (which I loved), he complained alot, but at the end of the day it grew on him although he never admitted it, hehe lol I think Icrossed the line when I made a bunch of lads sit thruogh the Lovesexy tour one night.. maybe that was the beginning of the end of that relationship, hehe!! lol

I played to the lovesexy tour to my friend.

He hated half of it, and thought some of it was very impressive (the guitar playing).

The piano part where Prince is dressed up sort of like a cross between the Vampire Lestat and Marie Antionette and when the audience sings along and Prince pauses then goes... "awwwww...."

...Well, that almost got me my ass kicked. neutral

Waitaminute.... Richard Simmons isn't gay?!?

lol

Anyway, I've always said that "if" Prince is gay, then he must be a lesbian. biggrin

There may be a few examples here of questionable lyrics, but we could go all day discussing the lyrics that are about women, sex with women, loving women, lusting women, women, women, women...

so, the whole walks like a duck thing still points to straight to me.

but who cares really? it's about the music, right?

to a few others here, I've always lived in the south, too. I don't really care what others may think, I'm secure in my sexuality. Even those that do think he's gay and know I like his music know that doesn't make me gay. I may stick to playing funky or hard rocking tracks for friends, but that's not cause other tracks make them think he (and maybe me too) is gay, it's cause guys don't listen to ballads together. That would be gay. lol

As a mark of respect for International Day Againt Homophobia (17/5) marking the all to recent removal of homosexuality as a mental illness by WHO, I call for a 24 hour lock on this topic.

The thread can be seen to be homophobic - Fey is just another way of calling certain gay people "fairies". Also it is yet another use of it is embarrassing to like such and such an artist who is androgenous or sexually ambiguous because my heterosexual friends feel threatened or uncomfortable by him or her.

Once the day is over come back if you want.

There seems to be a lot of confusion in this thread as to what fey means. There's the definition by a credible source rather than someone using tongue-in-cheek banter on a forum to mask homophobia.

Additionally, this thread is stupid as hell. If you're that insecure and if your "mates" are that insecure, you should seek therapy to try to alleviate your need to objectify people different than you.

There are a variety of definitions - the best one in this circumstance is the one advised by the thread initiator because it what he meant by it.

And, I agree with your last comment. Perhaps not therapy, but a long hard look.
