Your 4 mosty highly recommended Prince albums?

If you wanted to convince someone of P's greatness who's never been exposed to him and you only had 4 albums to give them....which 4 would you you choose...and which 4 would you want them to avoid at ALL costs?

I would choose

1999
Sign o the Times
Symbol Album
Rainbow Children

I would want them to avoid

New Power Soul
Planet Earth
Chaos and Disorder
Rave un2 the joy fantastic

Wow, this is going to be hard.

For You - This is a very good album, not only for the fact that he was only 20 years old and played everything.
Controversy - The title track, Sexuality and Let's Work are still his best work.
Diamonds & Pearls - A close call between this and Lovesexy. Both are brilliant.
prince - This album is worth getting just for Sexy MF alone!

Looks like I'm settling for the older stuff. Then again, hardly surprising is it.

Least recommended albums for a newcomer:

Parade - Not a good place to start. It has its moments though, like Sometimes It Snows In April and Girls & Boys.
Black Album - Just too weird. The fact that he cancelled the release literally at the very last minute says it all. That said, if you get a chance to hear it this album might grow on you with time.
Batman - Again it has its moments, like Batdance, but as a whole not really essential.
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - Like Parade, not a good place to start.

SOTT, PR, 1999 and Gold are good places to start, I'd say. Good combo of hits, accessability, weirdness and running the gammut of his strengths and sounds.

1999
Purple Rain
Controversy
Dirty Mind
Lovesexy
SOTT
Parade.....

F it.... there is too many and I feel bad leaving some out over others....

easier to say which to skip..... Better yet..... Some albums are great.. but have a few not so good tracks.... that would be the easier question.... Go album by Album and if there is a truly undesireable track write it down...
and just not listen to it.... and then again.... some mens trash is another treasure..... My advise give them the whole catalog and let then choose.. smile

having thought about it a bit more I think musicology would be a great way to ease someone in to prince.. its very different to his other albums but its the closest he has gotten to a 'new age pop' album.
