Parade
SOTT
Rainbow Children

Tough to cut ATWID and 1999, But I had to lean on the more experimental stuff, I love it when he tries new things.

Although If I were trying to get someone on the Purple bandwagon, I'd tailor the list to their tastes. Luckily Prince has a diverse enough catalogue that you could customize the recommendations.

Example: While NEWS is not MY favorite album, I had the DJ put it on as background music at my wedding while people ate. Without knowing who it was some people really liked it and asked what it was.

For this reason I don't think there is anything to avoid as a hard rule, Just depends on who you are trying to introduce.

1999
ONA (Solo Piano)
Lotusflow3r

I didn't recommend Purple Rain because everybody already knows it - and knows it's good. shrug

And I put Lotusflow3r in rather than SOTT because I think this most recent set gives a good sense of where Prince is now. Come and The Gold Experience are also great - but if I'm going to recommend an album, I want it to be something the person I recommend it to will enjoy. I think Come and TGE might be more enjoyable for someone who is already familiar with and enjoys Prince.

The Rainbow Children is great musically, but I would never recommend it for the simple fact that people who don't know Prince's work well would be put off by the lyrics.

If you think that voice is Vader-ish, you need to clean the wax out of your ears.

And where did I say any of the lyrics were "freaky?"

Well the myth behind TRC "Family Name lyrics" is repeated on this forum ...time after time and your name always seems to pop up, i wonder why you have a problem with it, but can't spell it out? lol

Given that I have talked about it repeatedly, and the fact that you know this, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to find out why - without my having to restate it (and hijack a thread that has nothing to do with that album). rolleyes

This is hard.

I guess Purple Rain to start out with not my fav but very popular and plus it got me into him
Musicology cuz its fonky!
Around the world in a day just because I love it
Then emancipation (dont know if it counts) cause its genious
Runner up would be LoveSexy

Avoid:
Parade
Grafitti Bridge
Black Album
Chaos And Disorder
Its not that I dont like these albums, they're all special in their own way but for a beginner fan you have to start out with easy, understandable , creative work then move to heavier stuff later if they like him.

people go on and on about post warner bros material being pants but have a listen closer and dont diss it outright.since the artist/prince left warner he has written some inspired work.TRC was awesome, musicology was like a homecoming,n.e.w.s.was different in a good way,3121 was the weakest album but still top stuff.what i want to say is dont give up on the artist.the next sign of the times could be just around the corner.i loved lotusflow3r!!!

2. Purple Rain
3. Parade
4. Around The World In A Day
5. 1999

These are 5 Prince albums that EVERYONE should own.
