Prince didn't invent soul, or the falsetto. People need to get a life and step out of the miserable cliche existences, and give folks credit where it's due. Maxwell didn't disappear for eight years, come back with an album and have it debut at #1 because he's pretending to be anyone.

At this point, Maxwell IS a better vocalist than Prince.

Maxwell has got a great deal of talent, no doubt. He just is not at Prince's level and will never be. Luckily he has recently gotten some attention. I used to listen to him quite a bit in the mid to late 90's and am diggin' the new stuff. He pulled a Sade and took like an 8 year break to release his latest I believe.

It's wrong to you. It's right to me. Prince is almost 51, and his voice has changed. He can't hit high notes, although he can still do a decent falsetto. He plays Muzak these days.

Maxwell is young at 36, in his prime (still), and knockin' it out of the park. He'd knock it out of Paisley Park too, given the chance.

Maxwell had a better afro than prince's as well, and he's taller and his dick is probably bigger. still if prince took 8 years to do one album it would probably be alright!

Maxwell is a better 'live' vocalist that Prince for sure.

But I like Prince for many reasons, his voice barely registering among those. lol

Prince is a 100x better vocalist today than he was when he began. Today, he has one of the most recognisable, versatile voices known.

The range on prince is very hard to compete with and i think it's undeniable his voice is far more diverse than Max.

Prince can do Maxwells voice but Maxwell can't do something like Housequake or Fury.

Now, who's falsetto you thinks better, is preference. I prefer Prince's because its more unique. Its like how Al Green just stepped out with this unheard of before falsetto, then Prince came and had the same effect.

Very well said. Maybe not better but in the same category. I think if anybody comes close to prince vocally, it has to be maxwell. who else you know thats a man that can hit a perfect falsetto live and then go super low with a bass like sound? You might not think maxwell is better but you can't diss him. his voice is superb along with his music. And besides Maxwell is my husband lol so i have 2 support him. but i do love prince.

Thats right ernestsewell he did not, the falsetto is most often used in the context of singing to refer to a type of vocal phonation that enables the singer to sing notes beyond the vocal range of the normal or modal voice. So i would say Prince got Maxwell beat by hair.

If we're talking about "Vocal Range" here, then let's not forget about the 'Chest Range'. Prince is only a good singer when he sings 'Falsetto'. Maxwell on the other hand can sing circles around Prince in Chest Voice. Prince never truly developed a good range outside of his Falsetto. When he does sing in Chest Voice he is decent...at best. Any vocal teacher will tell you that your range is not how High you can go. It's how many notes you can sing going up and down the piano.

Why do Prince fans want him to be the best at everything? He's not..he's human.

Love BOTH of their voices and music!
They are two of the best.
Prince can do more vocally than my boy Max, though, in my opinion.
I can think of many Prince songs where Max couldn't do what Prince does, but I can think of far fewer Maxwell songs where Prince couldn't do what Maxwell does.
As versatile as Maxwell is, Prince is even moreso.
Max couldn't nail "How Come You Don't Call Me'' like P, or those ridiculously high notes on "Gotta Broken Heart Again'' on the Live Alladin DVD, or the screams on "Something In The Water."
At least, he hasn't shown these particular skills publicly that I know of. And he's still plenty remarkable.
(Wouldn't it be cool if they performed together on an awards show - trading screams with Prince on piano?)
I'd say play your co-worker songs like the above, but don't sweat it if he still doesn't agree. His taste may just be different.

I was on the fence until I read this post. That's a great point. Prince does do a lot of things with his voice, I couldn't imagine Maxwell doing.

You're also right about the unique sound of his and Al Green's falsetto. Like Al, his voice may not be pitch perfect, but it's perfectly flawed, if that makes any sense. smile

It is subjective, and you cant go wrong with a brotha like Maxwell. I think Prince has the more identifiable trademark vocals, and truthfully some of those were rips from Hendrix, Sly and Smokey. I love hearing prince at any range and being biased i have to give it to Prince-but not to the detriment of a talent like Max. Hell, Prince's appeal is that of a complete artist- that is where everybody else pales in comparison. I think theres a lot of people that do specific things better but if you flip it he can do 4 or 5 things better than the people we compare him to.
