I still have mixed feelings about TRC. The music side of it.. I thought "finally he's exploring again!" and I was excited. But I don't like being preached to. especially when the preacher sounds confused or at least confusing. One of my favorite love songs of his ever came off that album though.. "She Loves me For Me". He had a tight sounding band. I forget the order they came out, but the One Night Alone piano album was very nice. It was simple. Sometimes simple gets the job done. "When others shout, you must learn to whisper.." The live ONA.. I have mixed feelings mainly for one reason. "Xenophobia". The "leader or follower" bit. I can picture the look on some fan's face. What an asshole way to preach to someone and try to make them look stupid. I seriously doubt that person is still a fan these days. That was mean. Musically the rest of it.. the band was great.. he was in great form.. I hate snippet runthroughs though. Why tease us with "Condition of the Heart" when I literally can't even identify where in that track it is supposed to be. Same goes for the Aftershow disc. 10 minutes of jam and one line or two from Alphabet Street.. I'm thinking "oooh this is a 10 minute alphabet street" when I got it. Let down!! The jazz albums.. NEWS/Xpectation/C-Note.. while I havent heard any of them more than 3 or 4 times and dont recall the melodies to remember certain tracks, I did like them and thought they were worth hearing. At least it was different. He was going down a new musical road and at least that was exciting, and he had a top notch band to experiment with. But it was all bittersweet. Seeing what the JW preachings were doing to him soo rapidly became very hard to watch. One thing I always took from Prince's earlier music was that individuality was a good thing.. that love is god.. god is love...former rules don't apply..live for love..and may u live 2 see the dawn. Not women shall be subject to man and they subject to the one true god and all others shall be banished" That doesn't gel with me. I LOVE this post and agree with just about all of it. A couple of minor caveats. I don't think the music on Rainbow Children was terribly original, although I do agree he was definitely exploring. That being said, there were still two or three great tracks, (She Loves Me, The Work part I, Family Name minus the intro) a couple of good ones (Muse to the Pharoah, Last December) and the rest didn't really work for me on the studio album. I believe all of the songs from this album benefitted greatly from the live setting. I'm on record as saying I believe ONA Piano is Prince's finest album post '88 and one of the best in his entire catalog. The "jazz" albums are very hit or miss affairs. CNOTE and NEWS don't really get a lot of rotation for me. When I'm really mellow and in the mood for them they are pleasant enough. But there's not much energy there. XPectation for me has some finer moments. There are still some duds on there as well, but I think it is the most focused and has the most energy of the three by far. I wish he had left the studio version of Xenophobia on it. 
As far as the preachiness factor, I think many many folks on here would completely agree with that. (Especially about him sounding confused himself). | |

First, what's wrong with sounding confused if you ARE? (remember the lyrics of For You.....) Second, maybe that same individualism and it's resulting disintegration of social cohesion was the exact reason for his jehovaism? just questions..... Ow and by the way, I DO think that the ONA era was the best of his whole carreer, even beating Parade AND SOTT! | |
